Bihar govt upgrades security for key politicians
According to the latest notification, Choudhary, already a Z-plus protectee, will now also be covered under the Advanced Security Liaison (ASL) protocol, which requires coordination between local agencies — including district administration, police, health, and other departments — to ensure safety.
The protocol also mandates anti-sabotage checks and multi-layered security rings.
RJD leader and former deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav will now be provided Z-category security, following a review of threat levels for VIP protectees in the state, it added.
The government has also granted Y-plus security to Independent MP from Purnea Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, Araria MP Pradeep Kumar Singh, and Barh MLA Gyanendra Singh Gyanu.
Z-plus is the highest level of security provided by the government, surpassing X, Y, Y-plus and Z categories. PTI PKD MNB

Trump, Vance To Meet Zelenskyy Virtually Before Alaska Summit With Putin: Report
The purpose of the dialogue is to address Ukraine's growing concerns about being side-lined in negotiations. US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are scheduled to meet in Alaska on August 15 to discuss the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The high-stakes summit will take place behind closed doors and will be limited to representatives from the US and Russia, raising significant concerns over Ukraine's exclusion from direct participation. Addressing criticism surrounding Kyiv's absence from the in-person discussions, the White House officials confirmed on Tuesday that President Trump will hold a virtual meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prior to the summit, ABC News reported. The session is expected to take place on Wednesday. Sources familiar with the development said President Trump and Vice President JD Vance will join the virtual meeting, which will also include key European allies. The purpose of the dialogue is to address Ukraine's growing concerns about being sidelined in negotiations that could shape the outcome of the war and affect its territorial sovereignty. Recently, President Zelenskyy has issued repeated warnings that 'talks about us, without us, will not work." He has also rejected any possibility of agreeing to territorial concessions, especially the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the contested Donbas region in the east. The Donbas region, comprising Luhansk and Donetsk, has been a focal point of the war since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Moscow has since claimed both regions as part of its territory. Zelenskyy also expressed frustration with the Alaska summit, calling the direct Trump-Putin meeting a 'personal victory" for the Russian leader. Although the White House has framed the summit as a 'listening exercise" for President Trump, Ukrainian officials fear their interests may be compromised in backchannel talks. Still, Zelenskyy struck a hopeful tone, revealing that during a recent call with US envoy Steve Witkoff, he received a subtle indication that Russia may be open to negotiating a ceasefire. 'This was the first signal from them," he noted. Get breaking news, in-depth analysis, and expert perspectives on everything from geopolitics to diplomacy and global trends. DA case: Mohali court defers Majithia's bail plea to August 13
A local court on Tuesday once again deferred the decision on the bail plea of senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Punjab minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia, who remains in judicial custody since July 6 in connection with a disproportionate assets case. Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia remains in judicial custody since July 6 in connection with a disproportionate assets case. (PTI) The hearing on the bail plea took place on Tuesday, during which lawyers from both sides presented their arguments for about an hour. However, no verdict was announced and the court posted the matter for August 13. The court was also expected to pronounce its decision on Majithia's plea seeking a change of barrack in jail. After hearing arguments on this petition as well, the court reserved its decision until August 21. Majithia's counsel told reporters that this was the sixth time the court had deferred his client's bail plea. He alleged that the Punjab government was deliberately delaying the matter and had failed to substantiate its claims. On June 25, Majithia was arrested by the Vigilance Bureau at his residence in Amritsar in connection with the disproportionate assets case. He is currently lodged in Nabha Jail. The disproportionate assets case against Majithia stems from an ongoing investigation by a special investigation team (SIT) of the Punjab Police, which is also probing his alleged involvement in the 2021 drug case. Majithia had earlier been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, based on a 2018 report submitted by the state's Anti-Drug Special Task Force (STF). He spent over five months in Patiala Jail before being granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana high court in August 2022.

Ahmed Patel's son hails PM for Op Sindoor, says nation 'in safe hands'
Faisal Patel NEW DELHI: In remarks likely to raise eyebrows in the Congress, Faisal Patel -- son of the late party stalwart Ahmed Patel - has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership during Operation Sindoor , the cross-border strike on terror camps in Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. "It can't be better than who's running the show... The armed forces have done a great job, and PM Narendra Modi showed great leadership and brought us out of a huge crisis. I am proud of our armed forces. I have a lot of respect for Jaishankarji. How Modiji picks up bureaucrats, makes them leaders and puts them in ministry roles is a very good thing," Patel told ANI. In an interview to CNN-News18, he called Modi and home minister Amit Shah "great leaders" and declared the country was "in safe hands" - a remark loaded with political irony given Ahmed Patel's long rivalry with Modi during UPA years, when he was Sonia Gandhi's most trusted strategist. Though insisting he remains a Congress member, Patel pointed to internal drift in the party.
