Jenna Ortega speaks up about 'Scream 7' exit rumours
Ortega, who played Tara Carpenter in 2022's Scream and 2023's Scream VI, exited the seventh movie in November 2023. She said at the time it was due to her "shooting schedule", reported Variety.
"It had nothing to do with pay or scheduling," Ortega revealed. "The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart. If Scream VII wasn't going to be with that team of directors and those people I fell in love with, then it didn't seem like the right move for me in my career at the time."
The "Melissa stuff" refers to Ortega's Scream co-star Melissa Barrera, who was sacked from Scream 7 after making social media statements against Israel and Palestine. The news of Ortega's departure came one day after Barrera's termination, prompting conjecture that Ortega was leaving the club to support Barrera.
Franchise producer Spyglass Media Group said in a statement, "Spyglass' stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech."
After Barrera's firing, Scream 7 director Christopher Landon posted and deleted a statement on X that read, "Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make." About a month later, Landon exited the film and wrote on social media: "It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it's time to move on."
Scream moved on with Kevin Williamson, the franchise's original screenwriter, stepping in to direct the seventh installment, which will feature the return of franchise icon Neve Campbell.

Actor Jackie Chan was honoured with Locarno's career achievement award, the prestigious Pardo alla Carriera, at the ongoing Locarno Film Festival 2025, reported Variety. At the Swiss fest, the actor opened up about his early days in showbiz and reenacted his role in Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon. Chan played a small part in the film. I could kick the teacher, punch someone, whatever I wanted," he joked. Variety reported that Chan started out as a stuntman, appearing in Lee's Fist of Fury, before eventually transitioning into acting following some childhood experiences on set. The actor also admitted that he never wanted to limit himself to just acting. Ambitious, Chan revealed that he wanted to learn filmmaking from scratch. "I do everything myself. Now, I tell filmmakers: 'If you only learn how to direct, that's not good enough'," said Chan. The actor's directorial projects include Police Story, Police Story 2, The Fearless Hyena, The Young Master and others. While honouring Chan with the achievement award, artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro said, "He reinvented, literally, what an action film is. There is before Jackie Chan and there's after." Accepting the award, Chan recalled a conversation he had with his father, back when he asked him: "I'm 60. Can you still fight when you're 60?" Chan replied: "I didn't know what to say [to him]. But now I'm 71 and I still can fight." Chan was recently seen in the film Karate Kid Legends, which starred Ben Wang in the lead role. It was the sixth film in the Karate Kid franchise.

MTV VMAs nominations out: Lady Gaga leads with 12 nods, Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar follow
Singer and actor Lady Gaga is the frontrunner for MTV's Video Music Awards (VMAs) as the musician scored 12 nominations for the 2025 ceremony, set to take place on September 7, reported Variety. Gaga's dozen nominations are followed by 11 for Bruno Mars, 10 for Kendrick Lamar, eight apiece for Sabrina Carpenter and Rose, and seven each for Ariana Grande and The Weeknd. According to the media outlet, Billie Eilish landed six nods, and Charli XCX picked up five nominations. There's also a six-way tie with four nominations each for Bad Bunny, Doechii, Jelly Roll, Ed Sheeran, Tate McRae and Miley Cyrus. Gaga's nominations are split between 'Die With a Smile', her duet with Bruno Mars, which has nominations spread across many of the top general categories and her 'Mayhem' album's 'Abracadabra,' which picked up nominations in every single one of the technical categories. Gaga's big haul of nominations marks the third time she has been the leading contender for the VMAs, after she previously led the nomination scorecard by picking up 13 in 2010 and nine in 2020. Fan voting is open until September 6, 2am UAE time, with the exception of the best new artist category, which will remain active into the show itself, according to Variety. Although neither Taylor Swift nor Beyoncé had much action in the way of new music videos in the past year, those two past VMAs winners remain in the running for artist of the year, a category that is not tied to any specific video.

TV series 'Wednesday' returns with family and female-focused Season 2
Actress Jenna Ortega and the creators of the hit Netflix series "Wednesday" are hoping to surpass expectations as the show returns to screens after almost three years. The dark fantasy series' first season, which premiered in November 2022, ranks as Netflix's most popular English-language show of all time, with more than 252 million views in the first 91 days of release. As well as reprising the titular role, Ortega, 22, took on executive producer duties for the new season. Filmmaker Tim Burton also returns as one of the directors and executive producers. "I've always been very protective of the character. I just want to make sure that we're always doing her justice," said Ortega. "It's the most we've ever seen her on screen so there's a lot of room and opportunity to maybe go off track. "Fortunately we have a really great creative team. I'm doing my best to be on it, but you also have people like Tim, who are monitoring." The second season sees Wednesday returning to Nevermore Academy as a celebrated hero, much to her dismay. She investigates new supernatural mysteries, while dealing with glitches in her psychic powers. Wednesday also faces another nuisance - family. Her little brother Pugsley starts his studies at Nevermore and their parents are a frequent presence on campus. 'PLAY OF EMOTIONS' Bringing the Addams Family to the academy allowed co-creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar to expand the storylines of the characters introduced in the first season and explore mother-daughter dynamics. "We thought, wouldn't that be, for Wednesday, the ultimate thorn in her side if Morticia (her mother) came to school," said Millar. Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia, promised fast-paced scenes between the two. "It's a dance and a play of emotions," Zeta-Jones said. The season's focus on female relationships stood out as one of its stronger points for Ortega. "We're so oftentimes taught to compete against one another and there's always some sort of comparing game that people are going to enforce on you," Ortega said. "What I love about the women I am working with and the characters, every woman in this show wants to see the other succeed. I think that's really important for young people to see today," she added. The sophomore season also introduces new characters, including Steve Buscemi's Nevermore principal Barry Dort and the Addams family matriarch Grandmama Hester Frump, played by Joanna Lumley. Pop star Lady Gaga makes a guest star appearance as a teacher in Part 2. Wednesday has already been renewed for a third season, with Gough and Millar in the writers' room "cooking that up" and ready to go beyond. "We have goalposts for other things. There could be spinoffs, there could be other iterations of the show," Millar said. "It's such a big world. We are excited to explore it as much as we can."
