KTMB reaffirms commitment to Johor on ETS expansion
KTMB said it is working with the relevant contractors and authorities to ensure its ETS service from Segamat to Kluang will be ready as soon as possible, with trial runs currently under way. PETALING JAYA : Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) is committed to fully expanding its Electric Train Service (ETS) to Johor as soon as possible. However, the company said it will only be done in phases, after ensuring the safety and reliability of the service to the southern sector, Bernama reported. 'KTMB's primary responsibility is to ensure safety, reliability and readiness before opening any new segment to the public,' it said in a statement today. KTMB said it is working with the relevant contractors and authorities to ensure the next segment of its service, from Segamat to Kluang, will be ready as soon as possible, with trial runs currently under way. The three phases for the ETS extension in Johor are to Segamat, Kluang, and JB Sentral in Johor Bahru. The service currently runs from Padang Besar in Perlis to Segamat. 'The transport minister (Loke Siew Fook) had announced last March, when launching the service to Segamat, that the extension in the southern sector will be done in phases, depending on several critical technical milestones and regulatory approvals,' KTMB said. The company said it wanted to reassure the public of its commitment to delivering a safe, modern and transformative rail service for the southern corridor, following recent reports on the service being extended to Johor Bahru. KTMB said the ETS service to Segamat has been operating successfully since March this year, offering improved travel options and stimulating local economic activity. 'KTMB wishes to thank all passengers, local stakeholders and the public for their patience and continued support. We remain fully committed to making ETS travel to the south a success,' it said.

Sarawak aligns tourism development with RMK13 investment zones
KUCHING: The Sarawak government has expressed readiness to align its tourism development strategies with the newly announced tourism investment zones under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak's Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, stated that while the state already possesses strong tourism offerings, further collaboration with federal initiatives will enhance mutual benefits. 'If the tourism investment zones include areas like Mulu, Niah, the Kuching Delta, and the Rainforest World Music Festival, then we are already aligned. We just need deeper discussions,' he said. He emphasised the importance of avoiding overlaps and instead strengthening ongoing and future efforts. Sarawak's tourism sector has shown promising growth this year, with visitor numbers nearing five million and revenue surpassing RM1 billion. Abdul Karim, who also oversees youth and entrepreneurial development, stressed that socioeconomic programs for bumiputera must align with Sarawak's existing ecosystem to ensure effective implementation. He welcomed RMK13's focus on expanding business opportunities through funding, training, and mentorship, noting that the state government has similar initiatives under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. Speaking at the Youth EdXchange Programme 2025, he highlighted the importance of youth empowerment. 'Your experiences—from community immersion to sustainability workshops—prove that when given a platform, young people lead with purpose,' he said. Melaka prepares to host World Tourism Day 2025 in September
ALOR GAJAH: Melaka is nearly 90% prepared to host World Tourism Day (WTD) 2025 from September 27 to 29. State Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman confirmed that programme content, venue selection, and international delegate invitations are almost finalised. 'We are in the final stages, with only 10 to 15% of work remaining. Invitations have been sent to tourism ministers worldwide, and we expect strong attendance,' he said after officiating the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) programme in Rembia. The main events will take place at a Melaka Raya hotel for the World Tourism Conference and at Kota Syahbandar's multi-purpose performance centre for the WTD 2025 Gala Dinner and Visit Malaysia Year 2026 launch. Abdul Razak highlighted the venue's suitability, stating, 'It will showcase Melaka's cultural diversity and strategic Straits of Melaka location to global delegates.' The centre will also feature performances from all 14 Malaysian states, open to both guests and the public. Separately, he praised the WRUR programme for effectively addressing local issues in seven constituencies, including Rembia.
