Somerset seal Blast quarter final berth with victory over Essex
In scintillating form beneath the Taunton floodlights, the 30-year-old right hander staged a breathtaking innings of 90 from just 39 balls, striking 8 fours and 7 sixes and dominating stands of 88 and 55 with Will Smeed and Tom Abell for the second and third wickets respectively as Somerset ran up an imposing 225-6 after Essex had won the toss. Smeed scored 32, Sean Dickson weighed in with 28 not out and, amid the carnage, Mohammad Amir emerged as the only Essex bowler to escape punishment, the Pakistan international returning stand-out figures of 3-22 from four overs.

Undermined by overseas bowlers Matt Henry and Riley Meredith, who claimed 4-21 and 2-22 respectively, the Essex chase came up well short as the visitors were dismissed for 130 in 14.1 overs, Noah Thain top-scoring with 38. This latest victory moves Somerset 12 points clear of nearest rivals Surrey, while Essex remain rooted to the foot of the South Group after suffering a ninth defeat in 11 games.

Tom Banton looked as though he meant business, plundering three boundaries at the expense of debutant Charlie Bennett to move to 15 in quick time, only to then chip Mohammad Amir to mid-on in the third over as Somerset lost their first wicket with 21 on the board. There was no loss of momentum though, Kohler-Cadmore and Smeed taking 16 off the next over, sent down by Noah Thain, while Bennett again proved expensive when switching to the River End and Paul Walter conceded 19 off the sixth as Somerset raced to 67-1 by the end of the powerplay.
Essex turned to spin in an attempt to stem the flow, but Kohler-Cadmore continued to trade in boundaries, smiting a brace of sixes off successive deliveries from Matt Critchley and then straight hitting Luc Benkenstein for another to raise a blistering 24-ball half century in the grand manner.

The visitors did little to help themselves, Bennett dropping Smeed on 20 at deep mid-wicket off the bowling of Critchley as the 8th over hemorrhaged 20 runs. Smeed had contributed 32 to a stand of 88 from 44 balls when he hit Benkenstein to long-off as the home side reached halfway on 114-2.
There was no let-up in the scoring rate, Kohler-Cadmore applying further pressure by hoisting Benkenstein for a towering six over long-off as the Essex bowling wilted in the face of heavy firepower. Kohler-Cadmore was within 10 runs of what would have been a magnificent hundred when a loss of concentration saw him hit Simon Harmer high to long-off to afford Essex overdue relief.
Critchley removed Abell for 20, but there was precious little breathing space for the visitors, Sean Dickson and Lewis Gregory picking up the cudgels in a stand of 28 from 12 balls. Dickson was still there at the end, unbeaten on 28 made from 17 balls.
Required to score at 12.5 an over, Essex made a decent enough start, Walter taking Craig Overton for a six and a brace of fours in a first over that yielded 15 runs. But Meredith redressed the balance, clean bowling the swinging Michael Pepper with 28 on the board in the third.

Somerset struck another blow in the next over, Ben Green taking a startling diving catch at long-on to send back Jordan Cox and give Henry a wicket on his final appearance before returning to New Zealand, while Meredith accounted for Charlie Allison. Henry then struck twice in three balls, removing Walter for 24 and Benkenstein without scoring to reduce Essex to 48-5, their prospects of pulling off an unlikely victory in tatters before the powerplay had even ended.
Critchley was then run out by Abell's direct hit and Lewis Goldsworthy had Robin Das held on the deep mid-wicket boundary with the score 81-7 as the home side exerted a vice-like grip on proceedings. Only Thain attempted to carry the fight to Somerset, the England Under-19 international crashing a four and 4 sixes in a defiant innings of 38 off 17 balls. His dismissal - caught by Henry at long-on off the bowling of Overton - signalled the end of meaningful Essex resistance.

Liverpool join chase for £68m England forward
Liverpool are in the process of selling Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich. The Colombian moves to Bavaria for a fee of around £65m and there is currently uncertainty over how the club's sporting director Richard Hughes plans to replace him. The Reds have got plenty of left-wing cover in the shape of Cody Gakpo and teen sensation Rio Ngumoha. And that's before we factor in the presence of TWO new faces. LFC Kits Shop Now LFC x New Era Shop Now LFC Signed Merch Shop Now LFC x Titleist Shop Now Florian Wirtz has been signed as a No10 but don't be surprised if Arne Slot opts to line the Germany international up from the left. Hugo Ekitike, meanwhile, is a striker by trade but is seen by club recruiters as a performer in the left-wing position. It has been suggested that instead of focussing on a like-for-like replacement for Diaz, Liverpool could channel his transfer proceeds into a deal for Alexander Isak. Liverpool still interested in Eze But another option is emerging in the shape of Crystal Palace attacker Eberechi Eze. The 27-year-old is a capable player down the left side but comes with the added versatility to play on the right and even in attacking midfield. Eze, an England international, scored eight goals and made eight assists for Palace in the Premier League last season - catching the eye of Liverpool's recruitment staff. It's been reported in Caught Offside that Liverpool are now in the running to sign Eze - who has got a £68m release clause in his Palace contract. Eze's reported £68m clause He is under contract until 2027 but Palace would probably sanction a deal this summer so long as a replacement is sourced. Liverpool are by no means frontrunners for Eze, according to the report, with Arsenal keen on landing the former QPR star. Mikel Arteta's side are prepared to offer £38m up front and £30m over two years - the report claims. But Bayern, fresh from signing Diaz, could ALSO make a play for Eze and reunite him with former Palace teammate Michael Olise. © IMAGO - Eberechi Eze Liverpool Will Liverpool field Eze wide or central? Premier League clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City have also been credited with interest. Bayern Munich are seriously considering a move, especially with the appeal of reuniting Eze with his former teammate Michael Olise. Liverpool's interest in Eze is intriguing. It will be fascinating to see whether the Reds see him as a midfielder or wide option. Either way, with Federico Chiesa, Harvey Elliott, Diaz and potentially Darwin Nunez leaving, it would be useful to have a player capable of performing well in a number of different attacking positions.

How Leicester City could line up on the opening day as Marti Cifuentes faces big calls
With a fortnight to go until the Championship season begins, Leicester City manager Marti Cifuentes should be starting to generate an idea of how his opening-day line-up will look. He's given 30 different players minutes over his three pre-season matches so far, but only 11 can step out at the King Power Stadium against Sheffield Wednesday. There's been a few clues, but nothing definitive over who could make the line-up, and so the next two weeks of training, and the dress rehearsal against Fiorentina, will help him make up his mind. READ MORE: Leicester City transfer state of play: Deal close, sales plan explained, possible exception READ MORE: Leicester City could miss out on free transfer to former manager For now, here is the state of play at City in each position. Goalkeeper Mads Hermansen is City's number one but he's not played any minutes in pre-season following groin surgery, while there's potential for him to leave before the end of the transfer window. It could leave a tricky decision. If Hermansen is able to prove his fitness over the next couple of weeks, does he start against Wednesday? Or does Jakub Stolarczyk, as the man who has played in pre-season and who could be the number one in case of Hermansen's exit, get the nod? Right now, it seems like the Pole is the favourite. Right-back With Cifuentes' focus on control and dominating the ball, Ricardo Pereira's skillset feels like it's perfect. But a hamstring issue saw the Portuguese miss the friendlies last Friday. If he recovers and plays against Fiorentina, it feels like the right-back role is his. Otherwise, it could go to Hamza Choudhury. The academy graduate, who has worn the armband a couple of times in pre-season, has been used as a right-back who inverts into midfield by Cifuentes, rather than as a player who is stationed in the centre of the park. It's also where he played and received positive reviews during his loan at Sheffield United last season. Centre-back There are five senior options for two spots and despite the Rangers interest, Conor Coady seems the most likely to be selected at the moment. He's played consistently through pre-season, has been captain at times and seems to be well-liked by Cifuentes. There's a wide range of options over who plays next to him. Jannik Vestergaard has the passing range that Cifuentes will love, but would there be enough pace at the back if the Dane partnered Coady? Wout Faes has played very well in pre-season, but could be off this summer, while Caleb Okoli has the physical attributes but perhaps not the passing ability that Cifuentes wants. Ben Nelson may provide the best of both words, but does have the least experience of the options. Albeit, he too has worn the armband this summer. Left-back Luke Thomas finished last season well and has looked confident on the ball in his couple of games under Cifuentes, moving into more advanced positions than he's usually seen in. But James Justin has had a particularly promising pre-season, especially going forward, and has switched from the right to the left over the past couple of matches. He is the favourite for now. Central midfield While Harry Winks did not have the best of games against Koln, his ability to influence a game at the base of midfield will be well-liked by Cifuentes, as it was by Enzo Maresca two years ago. That perhaps puts him in front to start in midfield, but it remains an open battle. Oliver Skipp, as the likeliest of the midfielders to remain at the club, could partner Winks, although there are questions as to whether the duo work together effectively, or if a different kind of midfielder is needed. Wilfred Ndidi and Boubakary Soumare are certainly that, but neither's future is sure. The Fiorentina friendly should reveal more. Right wing Once he's up to full speed, Abdul Fatawu is the obvious choice on the right. But he's yet to start a pre-season game as he's eased back following his ACL tear. In that case, Kasey McAteer is the frontrunner to start on the right side. He gives City something different out wide and his off-the-ball work-rate has impressed Cifuentes. Attacking midfield Bilal El Khannouss is the standout option as the most creative player City have in central areas. The questions are whether he will still be at the club come September and whether a player who is more likely to be present should start ahead of him. But equally, it may feel needlessly detrimental not to use El Khannouss while he's available to the club. The alternatives are Louis Page, who has impressed in pre-season but lacks experience, the 17-year-old never having played a senior game, or Will Alves, who is perhaps ready after his loan at Cardiff, but has mostly played on the wing in the friendly matches. Left wing Jeremy Monga has been City's best player in pre-season. If Cifuentes is true to his word, he should be starting, even if he has only just turned 16. But that's not to say Stephy Mavididi hasn't done well. In fact, he too has looked good in pre-season until a groin injury ruled him out of the most recent set of friendlies. Even if it's a minor injury, that could have tipped the balance in Monga's favour. Of all the decisions Cifuentes has to make, this looks to be the most difficult. Striker If City don't have a new forward through the door in time for the start of the season, then it's a choice between Jordan Ayew and Patson Daka. Both have now scored two in pre-season, but it's Ayew who looks to be the favourite. He's the better of the pair at receiving the ball to feet and bringing others into play. But saying that, if El Khannouss starts, Daka's sprints in behind may be preferred. It's another tight battle Are there players overlooked who should be involved? Click HERE to have your say

'Monumental errors' outweigh Meslier positivity
Goalkeeper Lucas Perri is the latest addition to Leeds United's defensive ranks and joins a pretty full-looking goalkeeping department. Which means one thing. Someone will leave. The new man comes expecting to be first choice and with some billing. Back in February, his coach at Lyon, Paulo Fonseca, called the Brazilian 'the strongest goalkeeper in the world' after an impressive display against Marseille. At one stage, some might have felt that tag could, down the line, have been used for Illan Meslier. However he now looks the most obvious option to depart. Sadly, for the Frenchman statistics such as becoming the youngest ever goalkeeper to keep 10 Premier League clean sheets, have been outweighed by numerous monumental errors over the past 12 months. Regular listeners to our podcast 'Don't Go To Bed Just Yet' will know I have long defended the 25-year-old. However, on episode 135 even my faith began to wobble following his display in the 3-3 draw at Hull. Daniel Farke's support, at that time, remained steadfast as it would be over two months before further errors against Swansea saw Karl Darlow given the nod at Kenilworth Road. The Welshman performed well when called upon, but he will surely now find himself back in the unique supporting role of a back-up stopper. Alex Cairns is the fourth currently on the books and, like Darlow is classed as a homegrown player. Add to that him being a local lad who isn't expecting to play and you have an ideal third choice. If Meslier is the one to seek pastures new I would add just one thing…a hefty sell-on clause…just in case!
