BJP alleges irregularities in ration shop salesmen, packers recruitment

The Hindu08-07-2025
Alleging irregularities in the recruitment of ration shop salesmen and packers for the shops in Tenkasi district, the Bharatiya Janata Party has appealed to the District Collector to conduct thorough inquiry into this serious issue and come-out with a white paper on his findings.
In a statement, Tenkasi district president of BJP Ananthan Ayyasamy said he had received complaints from the job aspirants and information from the public including the DMK functionaries that the ration shop workers recruitment was not done as per the norms stipulated by the Department of Cooperation. When the allegations were cross-checked with the sources in the Department of Cooperation, job aspirants and the selected candidates, it was found that the applicants who had scored low marks had been selected for the jobs of salesmen and packers.
Even though the announcement for recruitment of salesmen and the packers for ration shops being run by the Department of Cooperation said 40 salesmen and 11 packers (51 vacancies) would be recruited, the number of vacancies were increased midway to 66 – 52 salesmen and 14 packers. The reason behind increasing the number of vacancies was not made public.
As per the norms, the candidates' marks in Plus Two and SSLC and the marks they obtained in the personal interview would be considered for selection apart from the communal roaster as per reservation policies.
'While the candidates who have scored more than 1,000 marks have not found the place in the selection list, those who had obtained 950 have been selected. Private interaction with a few selected candidates has revealed that these appointments had been made by flouting the norms for hefty bribe. Hence, the District Collector should personally conduct an inquiry and release white paper on the recruitment of ration shop workers,' said Mr. Ananthan.

Address concerns of farmers, workers on priority, demands CPI(M)

The CPI(M) Andhra Pradesh State Committee has urged the Central and State governments to act immediately to address the hardships being faced by the farmers, workers, and citizens in the wake of floods, soaring power tariffs, and privatisation. Addressing the media in Vijayawada on Thursday, CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao, along with Central Committee member K. Lokanatham and State Secretariat member K. Prabhakara Reddy, outlined the resolutions passed at the State Secretariat meeting. Polit Bureau members B.V. Raghavulu and U. Vasuki participated. Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the party demanded ₹10,000 per acre compensation for crop losses in the Godavari region, urgent repairs to the tanks, canals, and roads, and a farmer-friendly crop insurance scheme fully funded by the Central and State governments. He said the party opposed land allocation to the LuLu Group malls in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, calling it harmful to small retailers, and urged use of lands for public and RTC development. He condemned the alleged forcible installation of smart meters and an additional ₹12,000 crore tariff burden. He said the party would observe August 28 as 'Pratijna Dinam' to commemorate the Basheerbagh firing incident. Mr. Srinivasa Rao appealed to the political parties to back the INDIA bloc's Vice-Presidential nominee Justice Sudarshan Reddy, and criticised the YSRCP, TDP, and JSP for siding with the BJP-led NDA on the issue. He further said that the party opposed the alleged privatisation of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and forced land acquisitions, and demanded priority to tribal rights and Polavaram oustees' rehabilitation.

1996 dhoti-pulling case against one of BJP's 1st 2 LS MPs dropped

representative image AHMEDABAD: Twenty-nine years after then Gujarat minister Atmaram Patel's dhoti was pulled during a BJP function at Sardar Patel Stadium, a city sessions court on Thursday dropped the criminal case against former Union minister A K Patel, one of the two first BJP Lok Sabha members. Another BJP politician, Mangaldas Patel, was also an accused in the case, registered at Naranpura police station under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) for allegedly assaulting and pulling off the minister's dhoti in 1996. The accused had backed Shankersinh Vaghela at the time of his rift with then chief minister Keshubhai Patel. The incident occurred immediately after BJP's Atal Bihari Vajpayee had finished addressing the party gathering. Public prosecutor Sudhir Brahmbhatt filed an application under CrPC Section 321 seeking withdrawal of the case against the 95-year-old former MP. The co-accused in the case, Mangaldas Patel, and witness (victim) Atmaram Patel, had passed away during the pendency of the trial. After hearing the submissions, additional sessions judge H G Pandya observed: "The case involves an internal political party dispute that occurred 28 years ago, and the victim, Atmarambhai Maganbhai Patel, has passed away... The public prosecutor's request to withdraw the case appears to be made with bona fide intentions, and sufficient consideration has been given to withdrawing the prosecution. Therefore, considering the records and the nature of the offence, it is appropriate to grant permission to withdraw the prosecution under Section 321 of CrPC in the interest of justice. " Earlier, on Jan 30, 2018, a metropolitan court had dropped a related criminal case against 41 BJP workers and politicians, including VHP leader Pravin Togadia and BJP MLA from Daskroi Babu Jamna Patel.

Wards Delimitation Draft Likely To Be Tabled Today

1 2 Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) may publish the draft of its new ward formation for the upcoming civic elections on Friday, formally setting the stage for political manoeuvring and public scrutiny. The draft, outlining boundaries of 38 prabhags, will be available on the civic body's website ( as well as at the election department in Civil Lines. The local body election process began after the Supreme Court's May 2025 order to conduct the elections in four months. The State Election Commission (SEC) has issued a detailed schedule for the delimitation exercise. The system of four corporators per prabhag, introduced in 2017, will continue this time too. Accordingly, 37 prabhags will elect four corporators each, while one prabhag will elect three, taking the number of elected representatives in the House to 151. After addition of five nominated members, the total strength will be 156. Reservations will also follow the 2017 framework. As per the SEC's timeline, the draft will remain open for objections and suggestions from August 22 to 28. These will be reviewed between August 29 and September 8, followed by hearings from September 9 to 15. The final proposal will be submitted to the SEC between September 16 and 22, with the approved ward structure scheduled for publication in early October. Nagpur's electorate has grown significantly since the last civic polls. As of July 1, 2025, the city has little over 24.84 lakh registered voters, compared to nearly 23.83 lakh during the 2017 elections. The number of male voters is around 12.26 lakh, while female voters edged ahead to over 12.57 lakh. With close to 60,000–65,000 voters per ward, political parties and candidates will face the challenge of campaigning across a much larger base. The increase in voters will also result in the increase in the number of polling stations. In 2017, Nagpur had 2,783 polling stations. This time, the number is likely to go up to 3,185. Considering the total number of voters, 3,470 control units and 13,880 ballot units are likely to be deployed. Sources indicated that only minor changes are expected in ward boundaries, mainly in areas where voter numbers have increased disproportionately or where margins were narrower in previous elections. "Except for some adjustments, there will be no major changes in BJP-dominated wards," sources said. The BJP has been in control of NMC for the last 15 years (from 2007 to 2017), winning 108 out of 151 seats in the 2017 elections. With the Mahayuti govt led by BJP also in power at the state level, the ward formation exercise is unlikely to disturb its strongholds. Yet, there is anxiety among former corporators, many of whom are keeping a close eye on the draft to see whether areas from their old prabhags will be retained. Even small boundary shifts could alter their electoral prospects and change the dynamics of winnability. The release of the draft is expected to trigger intense activity among political parties and aspirants, who will now study the new maps closely and prepare objections or suggestions within the stipulated window. Till late Thursday, NMC's election department had not received any communication from the State Election Commission regarding the publication of the draft ward formation, a source said. According to officials, incessant rainfall in Mumbai and other parts of the state has fuelled speculation that the SEC's deadline for the electoral process may be pushed back.
