UP CM pitches for gems, jewellery park in state, seeks a roadmap

Indian Express08-05-2025

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday called upon the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) to 'chart out a comprehensive roadmap' for setting up a gems and jewellery park in the state which he said offered a robust and secure environment for businesses.
Addressing an IBJA conclave in Lucknow, the CM highlighted the crucial role of the gems and jewellery industry in India's economy, saying, 'The sector contributes 7% to the country's GDP (gross domestic product) and generates significant revenue through import duties and GST. Beyond economic growth, the industry plays a vital role in job creation and enhancing India's global identity.'
Assuring full government support to the stakeholders in the sector, the Chief Minister said, 'Such conclaves open new avenues for trade. Uttar Pradesh now offers world-class infrastructure and all necessary amenities, making it a land of immense opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors. The state is not only free of riots but also of mafia. Now, the police here swiftly neutralise any threats. Festivals of all communities are celebrated peacefully.'
The Chief Minister assured traders of the government's 'steadfast support through enhanced security measures and open dialogue', outlining 'significant strides taken under the 'Safe City' initiative, including reducing police response time from 25–30 minutes to just 7–8 minutes'.
Emphasising an urgent need to establish a dedicated gems and jewellery park in the state, Adityanath urged the IBJA to develop a 'comprehensive model incorporating design, technology, processing, packaging, supply chain management and exports'.
Underlining UP's 'demographic advantage', the CM noted that the state with a population of 25 crore serves a broader region catering to the needs of nearly 30 crore people in terms of trade, employment, healthcare and education.

UP records highest transition rate from secondary to senior secondary schools

Lucknow: With a transition rate of 76.7% from secondary to senior secondary, Uttar Pradesh not only leads the country but also surpasses the national average of 71.5%, according to the latest report from the Project Approval Board (PAB) meeting held under the Union Ministry of Education for the academic session 2025-26. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, the state needs to work towards improving the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) and Net Enrolment Ratio (NER) at all levels—primary, upper primary, and secondary, says the report. While GER is the total enrollment in a particular level of school education, regardless of age, NER is the total number of pupils enrolled in a particular level of school education who are of the corresponding official age. Currently, the GER at the primary level stands at 82.9%, upper primary at 78.8%, secondary at 63.8%, and higher secondary at 53.2%. The NER at primary, upper primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels stand at 67%, 49.4%, 30.7%, and 23.8% respectively. The report shows that the state govt has committed to filling the vacant posts of teachers at all levels by March 2026. At present, 22.7% (1.81 lakh) posts are vacant at the elementary level, 40.4% (3,872) at the secondary level, and 59.7% (8,714) at the senior secondary level. Similarly, 16.7% of academic posts are lying vacant in the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and 42.7% in District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs). Reiterating the issue of single-teacher schools, UP was asked to take corrective action to ensure an adequate number of teachers in all schools, particularly at the elementary level. The state has 2,586 primary and 3,109 upper primary single-teacher schools. Likewise, the number of schools with less than 30 enrolments is quite high, with 7,037 primary and 1,859 upper primary schools. Moreover, the number of schools with less than 15 enrolments has increased substantially at the primary level, from 816 in 2022-23 to 1,329 in 2023-24, the report pointed out. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Nevertheless, UP has shown a decline in zero-enrolment schools, and the number of schools with an adverse pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) has decreased. The report has lauded the state's efforts towards mainstreaming Out of School Children (OoSC) with 100% coverage. For 2025-26, 68,913 OoSC have been identified. The report suggested that state officials initiate a special enrollment drive in the form of door-to-door surveys in school catchment areas to identify OoSC. To further enhance the accuracy of this identification, the state was also advised to analyse complementary data from sources such as the Registrar of Births and Deaths, Anganwadi centres, and the PM Poshan scheme. In addition, the report finds that almost 70% of the secondary and senior secondary schools do not have ICT labs and smart classrooms. Almost 40% of schools do not have subject-specific labs like physics, chemistry, and biology.

Centre approves MSP procurement for moong, groundnut in UP

Lucknow: The central govt has accepted the Uttar Pradesh govt's request to procure moong (green gram) and groundnut at the minimum support price (MSP). During a video conference on Wednesday with union minister of agriculture and farmers' welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan, UP agriculture minister Surya Pratap Shahi informed Chouhan that during the Zaid (summer crop) season of 2024–25, moong has been sown over 1.60 lakh hectares and groundnut over 1.74 lakh hectares in the state. He requested that these crops be procured at MSP—a request that was readily accepted by the union minister. For the Zaid 2024–25 season, the procurement target has been set at 34,720 metric tonnes for moong and 50,750 metric tonnes for groundnut. This decision is expected to benefit a large number of farmers in Uttar Pradesh. Chouhan also assured that, if needed, the procurement targets for moong and groundnut could be increased. Additionally, he stated that if a proposal is received for the procurement of urad (black gram), it will also be approved. Shahi expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union minister for the decision taken in the interest of farmers. He also urged the Centre to procure maize—currently being cultivated on approximately 4.80 lakh hectares during the Zaid season—at MSP to further boost farmers' income.

"Did BJP demand UP CM's resignation after Kumbh Mela stampede?": Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah

ANI 11 Jun 2025, 18:44 GMT+10 Chikkaballapur (Karnataka) [India], June 11 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday dismissed the BJP's demand for his resignation over the Bengaluru stampede, accusing the party of 'doing politics in everything.' Chief Minister Siddaramaiah questioned as to why the BJP had not demanded the resignation of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath when a stampede occurred during the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj earlier this year. '40-50 people died in a stampede at Kumbh Mela. Did they demand the chief minister's resignation then? A bridge collapsed on the day of the inauguration, and 140 people died. Did they demand the Prime Minister's resignation then?' Siddaramaiah asked while talking to reporters here. 'The BJP has a habit of misleading people by telling lies and demanding resignations. The BJP does politics in everything,' he added. Earlier, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi slammed the Karnataka government over the Bengaluru stampede that killed 11 people during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations. Joshi demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, citing their 'irresponsible and insensitive' handling of the crowd. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team was officially felicitated by the Karnataka government on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha (State Assembly) on June 4, before the stampede incident occurred at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Following the Bengaluru stampede that claimed 11 lives and left many injured, the Karnataka Government on June 5 suspended top police officials at the Cubbon Park Police Station and formed a one-man commission under a retired High Court Judge to probe the incident.
