In a June 2020 tweet, the socialist Mamdani is pictured flipping the middle finger at the towering statue located in Astoria, a neighborhood that falls within his state Assembly district.
'Take it down,' said Mamdani, who was running for state assembly at the time.
The post didn't sit well with Italian Americans in the big apple city, including the Columbus Heritage Coalition, ever since this week the post resurfaced on social platforms.
Angelo Vivolo, president of Columbus Heritage Coalition, vowed not to support the lefty candidate come November.
'We will defend Columbus Day and Columbus statues,' Vivolo told The New York Post.
'He is being disrespectful to the Italian American community,' said Vivolo, who is the former head of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, which runs the city's Columbus Day Parade. 'If you offend one community, you offend all communities.
'I don't think he will be mayor for all the people of New York City.'
The Italian Americans make up 8% of the population in the city, Mamdani has disrespected a big voting bloc, said Joseph Scelsa, founder and president of Italian American Museum.
'To eliminate such a large population of people would be a travesty,' he said. 'It's not inclusive. It's exclusionary.
'Who's to say who is a hero and who is not a hero? Columbus is our hero.'

Zohran Mamdani pulled a major upset in last month's Democratic primaries for the NYC's mayoral candidate, when he defeated former New York governor Andrew Cuomo.
Mmadani could possibly face Cuomo again in the November general elections, as the longtime Italian American pol is considering contesting as an Independent, along with current Mayor Eric Adams, who also is planning to run again for the office but this time as an Independent. Also in the fray will be GOP's candidate Curtis Sliwa.

A debate over the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls ahead of the Bihar elections turned into an ugly face-off between Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav in the Assembly, with the former calling the RJD leader "a child" when it came to the conduct of the poll body's exercise."You are a child. You know nothing about matters like these. Only three days are left in this last session of the House. Let it conduct legislative business. The only woman who got something was his mother," the Bihar Chief Minister the impartiality of the poll body, Tejashwi was speaking about the timing of the while exercise, asking: "In 2003, it took one and a half years to complete a similar S.I.R. drive. This process could have been conducted after the Lok Sabha elections. It's the monsoon season in Bihar—how will people fill out the forms?"Stating that the Constitution granted everyone the equal right to vote, Tejashwi further asked why the Election Commission was not allowing voters to submit ration and aadhaar cards during the verification drive."Why isn't Aadhaar being linked? Mutton Politics In Bihar Poll Pot, Tejashwi Yadav Slams NDA Meet Menu
Patna: Heated exchanges between the ruling JDU-BJP and the Opposition RJD are keeping the election pot boiling in Bihar, and now mutton politics is on the stove. Tejashwi Yadav, RJD leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, has shared a video from an NDA meeting at the Assembly in Patna this Monday. The video shows a pot labelled 'Mutton Roganjosh' in the dining area. The Kashmiri delicacy was served on the second Monday (Somvaar) of the Hindu month of Sawan, considered sacred by a section of Hindus, who avoid non-vegetarian food during this month. Mr Yadav, who has drawn fire from the BJP in the past for eating non-vegetarian food during holy months, targeted the BJP's "selective" politics over food. "With Prime Minister Narendra Modi's blessing, BJP's ministers and MLAs are feasting over mutton on Sawan Somvar." … — Tejashwi Yadav (@yadavtejashwi) July 21, 2025 The Bihar cabinet, he said, has three ministers who consume 1 kg of mutton daily, but "deliver long speeches on Sanatan". "We have no problem with anyone's food habits, but the Prime Minister is so selective. He is fine with his party leaders eating mutton, but when it comes to Opposition leaders, who do not eat meat during Saawan, he does not hesitate to use lies to turn their food habits into a national issue," Mr Yadav said on X. Hitting back, BJP spokesperson Manoj Sharma asked if Mr Yadav has CCTV footage of who ate what. "Should he be watching the food counter or working for Bihar's development? Maybe the caterer served both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. What's the fuss?' he asked, according to a report in The Times of India. Last week, the RJD leader had targeted the NDA and the Prime Minister over JDU leader and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh -- also known as Lalan Singh -- hosting a mutton party. "We have been called anti-Sanatan by them. The Prime Minister is coming to Bihar tomorrow and will thank Lalan Singh from the stage for arranging a mutton party for his supporters. He is doing a charitable deed," Mr Yadav said. Earlier, in 2023, the BJP and its allies had slammed the RJD-Congress alliance over visuals of RJD patriarch and veteran politician Lalu Prasad Yadav hosting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for a mutton meal during the month of Saawan. Targeting RJD and the Congress, the Prime Minister had said the parties in the INDIA alliance don't care about the feelings of most of the country's population. "During Sawan, they are going to the house of a convicted man and cooking mutton. Not only that, they are also posting videos and teasing the people of the country. The law does not stop anyone from eating anything, and neither does Modi, but their intention is different. When the Mughals attacked, they were not satisfied with defeating the king alone. They did not get satisfaction until they destroyed temples... they enjoyed doing this. In the same way, by uploading the video in the month of Sawan, they (the opposition) are exhibiting the thoughts of the Mughal era, attempting to tease people and fortify their vote bank," he had alleged. The BJP had also tried food politics against Mr Yadav just before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, when it accused the RJD leader of eating fish during Navratri. Mr Yadav had responded that the video, which showed him and Vikassheel Insaan Party chief Mukesh Sahni, was shot a day before Navratri.

Rising demand for girls-only colleges in Dakshina Kannada; Karnataka govt sanctions two institutions
MANGALURU: In a notable shift in parental preferences, Dakshina Kannada district is witnessing a growing demand for girls-only colleges, particularly from sections of the minority community. Responding to this trend, the Karnataka government has sanctioned two new girls' educational institutions in the Mangaluru Assembly (Ullal) constituency, which is represented by Assembly Speaker UT Khader. The Department of Minorities has sanctioned Rs 17 crore for a new educational complex offering schooling from Class 1 through degree level. The facility, which will cater to both residential and day scholars, will be established between Konaje and Pajir. Additionally, the Waqf Department will develop a girls' PU college in Ullal town. Both institutions will follow a 75:25 reservation ratio for minority and non-minority students, respectively. The move aligns with a larger trend in the region. In Derlakatte, a government PU college, that was co-educational until last academic year, has now been converted into a girls-only institution, citing poor male enrolment and complaints about disruptive behaviour from some boys. In 2022-23, only 41 of the 91 enrolled were boys. The change was made after a proposal from the College Development Committee, led by MLA Khader, and was supported by parents. Officials and educators say that the demand for girls-only colleges rose sharply in Dakshina Kannada post the 'Hijab episode'. According to the principal of a government women's college in Mangaluru, the dropout rate among Muslim girls tends to increase after Class 10 and PUC, especially when access to nearby girls-only colleges is lacking. Early marriage and parental hesitation toward co-education have also been cited as contributing factors.
