JMPD officers arrested for extortion and corruption

JMPD received a distress call from a concerned citizen who reported being extorted by officers.
Two Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers have been arrested on charges of extortion and corruption.
The arrests on Saturday followed a swift probe initiated by a public complaint.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said they received a distress call on Saturday from a concerned citizen who reported being extorted by officers.
Arrest
Fihla said the operation involved a coordinated effort from the JMPD's Internal Affairs Unit, which effected the arrests.
'The complainant alleged that officers demanded R8 000 after accusing their company driver of fleeing an accident scene. Acting on the provided vehicle registration, JMPD Internal Affairs quickly tracked the vehicle to a BP Garage in Parktown, where three officers were located.
A search of the officers and their vehicle uncovered R5,340 from two male officers, much of which could not be accounted for and was suspected to be illicitly obtained. Some of the money was found concealed within the vehicle. The two male officers were immediately detained at Jeppe SAPS on charges of extortion and corruption,' Fihla said.

Warning
JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca said the arrest of these two officers sends a clear message.
'There is no place for corruption within the JMPD. We are unwavering in our commitment to rooting out corrupt elements and ensuring that our officers serve with integrity and honour. We urge the public to continue reporting any suspicious activities, as their vigilance is crucial in helping us maintain a trustworthy police service.'
The JMPD has urged the public to report any corruption and unethical behaviour within the department by calling the JMPD Anti-fraud and Corruption Hotline: 0800 203 712 (Toll-free), or in person by visiting the JMPD Internal Affairs Directorate at Wemmer Complex No. 22, Loveday Street, Selby, Johannesburg.
'The JMPD is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability within its ranks. We want to assure the public that we are taking decisive action against any form of corruption,' it said.

Flashy sports car seen drag racing on Midrand's Allandale Road

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe expressed grave concern about a group of motorists who were drag racing along Allandale Road in Midrand. Deppe said she saw these flashy sports cars on July 13 around 08:50 racing aggressively down the road, 'treating it as if it were a racetrack'. She said this reckless behaviour was completely unacceptable, especially on a peaceful Sunday morning when such disturbances disrupted the entire community. If anyone recognises these cars or knows the owners, I urge you to come forward with this information. We need to hold these individuals accountable to prevent such dangerous actions from recurring. Additionally, there was another car trailing the racers, with its boot open, apparently filming the cars. By working together, we can ensure the safety and tranquillity of our neighbourhood,' added Deppe. She suspects that this was the same crowd that had been racing in the Sunninghill and Waterfalls areas, especially in the wee hours between 22:00 and 04:00. 'The road infrastructure, particularly at intersections, has been destroyed by these people losing control of their vehicles. That's part of the reason why they do it at night; they do the race, and by the time anyone responds, they are long gone. I have reported these to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department [JMPD] control centre several times.' 'The JMPD is actively investigating these allegations. We will be deploying increased patrols to the Allandale Road area, particularly during weekend mornings, to deter similar future incidents and to monitor for any unlawful activities. We also encourage any other community members with information, including those who may have filmed the incident, to come forward and assist with the investigation. Information can be shared anonymously if preferred,' said Fihla. He added that drag racing and any form of reckless driving on public roads, especially residential ones, were unequivocally illegal and posed a severe threat to public safety. Also read: JMPD removes street dancers on Allandale and Pretorius roads 'Perpetrators arrested in connection with such activities could face charges of reckless or negligent driving and illegal racing. In cases where injuries or fatalities occur, more severe charges such as culpable homicide can be applied. Furthermore, the impoundment of the vehicles involved is also a possibility, subject to due legal process.' Fihla commended Deppe's vigilance and for bringing this serious matter to their attention, as the safety and tranquillity of communities were paramount. Pastor arrested for allegedly raping 14-year-old girl in Limpopo church

A 40-year-old pastor has been arrested for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl inside a church in Limpopo. Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the incident allegedly happened on July 9, when the suspect asked the 14-year-old girl to come to the church, but once she arrived, he reportedly locked her inside his office. "The victim found the pastor alone in the church office. It is alleged that the suspect locked the door and forced the victim to perform sexual acts before repeatedly raping her." Ledwaba further stated that the pastor allegedly told the victim to keep the incident a secret. Despite this, the 14-year-old bravely reported the incident to her family, which led to an immediate rape case being opened. "The victim courageously disclosed the ordeal to her family on July 19, after which the police were immediately notified. A case of rape was opened and investigated by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit and the suspect was arrested on July 20," Ledwaba added. The 40-year-old appeared on July 21 facing charges of rape. Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the victim for her courage in speaking out and reporting the serious crime. "We encourage parents and guardians to maintain open communication with their children and to report any suspicious behaviour immediately." In recent months, there has been a disturbing wave of scandals that continues to rock faith communities across South Africa. A string of high-profile religious leaders have faced serious accusations of sexual abuse, prompting growing outrage and calls for justice. Two of the most prominent figures at the centre of these allegations are Bishop Bafana Stephen Zondo, head of Rivers of Living Waters Ministries, and Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso, founder of Jesus Dominion International. Zondo, a once-revered spiritual leader with thousands of followers across Gauteng, is currently facing 10 charges, mostly rape and sexual assault, brought forward by seven women, many of whom were members of his church. The alleged abuse spans years and involves disturbing claims of spiritual manipulation and physical violation. In March 2025, the Sebokeng Regional Court ruled that Zondo must stand trial, dismissing his attempt to have the charges dropped under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act. His subsequent bid to have Judge Papi Mosopa recused from the case, citing alleged bias, was also rejected. Meanwhile, Timothy Omotoso, whose case has gripped the country for nearly eight years, was acquitted in April 2025 on 32 counts, including rape, human trafficking, and racketeering. The Gqeberha High Court ruled that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt, citing poor witness cross-examination and procedural irregularities. The acquittal triggered a wave of public outrage, with gender-rights organisations and civil society groups accusing the justice system of failing survivors and protecting powerful religious leaders. Jane Makekema, a resident of Evaton in the Vaal, said she no longer feels safe attending church. 'I used to go to church to find peace, now I fear it's where the most damage is done.' She added that although she no longer goes to church, she still believes there are good faith leaders in our communities. 'Not all of them are bad; there are men and women truly called to serve, but their good work is drowned out by the horror stories we keep seeing in the news.' In response to mounting pressure, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has filed an appeal to overturn the controversial acquittal. As previously reported by IOL, the NPA has formally requested that the presiding judge provide clarification on the ruling, a necessary step before the matter can be escalated to the Supreme Court of Appeal.
