These things won't bother Shanto and me: Mehidy Hasan on taking over as Bangladesh ODI captain

Dhaka: Mehidy Hasan Miraz confirmed the recent ODI captaincy shuffle will not affect the former captain Najmul Hossain Shanto or him as they collectively work as a team for the betterment of Bangladesh cricket. In a surprise and shocking move, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Thursday appointed Miraz as ODI captain for the next 12 months. The 27-year-old will lead the team starting from the upcoming three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka next month, succeeding Shanto who remains Bangladesh Test captain with Miraz appointed as his deputy. "I don't know how (the captaincy) was decided. It is usually done in a board meeting. Nobody can decide on their own. I think all of us are usually prepared mentally for any situation we may have to face (as far getting axed is concerned)," Mehidy told reporters on Friday. "He was the ODI captain for a term, which had ended (in the Champions Trophy). They probably had conversations about the Test team. I am not sure if they spoke about the ODI team. Fahim sir (Nazmul Abedin - BCB cricket operation chairman) called me (yesterday) and said that they are going to give me the responsibility and he said that they don't have much time. They have to take a decision quickly. He said that they are planning accordingly." Miraz shares a strong rapport with Shanto, having played alongside him and also captained him at various age-group levels, including the 2016 U19 World Cup. He believes the opener will have no issues playing under his leadership once again. "He (Najmul) has been performing well in ODIs but it was the board's decision (to change the captaincy). We may not have fulfilled expectations in terms of team results during this period," he said. "I don't think it will have an effect on the dressing room (change in captaincy). We are all playing for the country. These things won't bother Shanto and me. I helped him a lot during his captaincy. He will do the same. He will help me. We want to take Bangladesh forward. "Shanto and I have been playing together since our Under-15s. We spoke about taking Bangladesh forward, it doesn't matter who is the captain. We have to play as a team. Our senior players brought us to a stage, and now we want to take the team further. It is our responsibility. We are going through a bad time but I hope that we can get over it quickly," Miraz added.

Another Final, Another Loss for Shreyas Iyer as Maratha Royals Lifts Mumbai T20 Trophy

For the second week in a row, a team captained by Shreyas Iyer fell short in a T20 final. At the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, MSC Maratha Royals chased down SoBo Mumbai Falcons' 157 for four to clinch the T20 Mumbai League title, winning by five wickets with four balls to spare. Chinmay Sutar, the Royals' Impact Player, anchored the innings with a steady 53 off 49 balls, while Awais Khan's brisk 38 from 24 deliveries injected momentum into the chase. The two added 75 runs in nine overs after Sutar had an early reprieve — dropped on 15 by wicketkeeper Angkrish Raghuvanshi. While Sutar rotated strike, Awais attacked the spinners with clean sweeps and calculated lofts. Akash Parkar's pace was used against him in the 16th over, and although both set batters fell to Kartik Mishra in the penultimate over, veteran Rohan Raje sealed the win with two composed strokes in the final over. Earlier, the Royals opted to bowl after Siddhesh Lad won the toss. The Falcons laboured to 60 for three in 10 overs. Shreyas Iyer, looking to break the shackles, fell for 12 trying a reverse sweep. Harsh Aghav (45* off 28) and Mayuresh Tandel (50* off 32) then stitched together a late surge, adding 85 off 49 balls. Their finish pushed the total past 150 — but not far enough. The Royals kept their nerve. Iyer's team was left heartbroken again. Brief scores SoBo Mumbai Falcons 157 for four in 20 overs (Mayuresh Tandel 50 n.o., Harsh Aghav 45 n.o.; Vaibhav Mali 2/32) lost to MSC Maratha Royals 158 for five in 19.2 overs (Chinmay Sutar 53, Awais Khan 38) by six wickets.

Gambhir's return due to family emergency not first such incident: Last year, a veteran India cricketer faced same fate

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has returned home midway from the England tour due to a family emergency. Gambhir took the flight back to India ahead of the intra-squad warm-up match to attend to his mother, who has been admitted to the hospital. The head coach accompanied the Indian team to England for the five-Test series starting June 20 and was involved in training sessions ahead of the warm-up matches, but a sudden family emergency forced him to return home. In Gambhir's absence, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate will take charge of the team during the four-day intra-squad match between India and India A, starting on Friday. Sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed to Hindustan Times that Gambhir is indeed back in the country and is spending time with his family. 'Gambhir had to return to India because of a family emergency. He left for India on Wednesday. Our prayers are with his family,' a source said. "As of now, his exact date of arrival in the UK is not certain and it all depends on his mother's recovery. If everything goes well, he should be back for the first Test in Headingley," the source added. Gambhir's mother is currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital in Delhi after experiencing a cardiac arrest. His return to England will depend on her condition as it evolves. Meanwhile, it is not the first time that a member of the Indian team left a series midway due to a family emergency in recent times. It happened with recently-retired spinner Ravichandran Ashwin when India was playing England in a Test series at home in 2024. Ashwin rushed back to his home in Chennai in the middle of the third Test against England in Rajkot after learning that his mother had been hospitalised due to a blackout, forcing him to leave the team temporarily to be by her side. "When I landed and got to the hospital, my mom was slipping in and out of consciousness, and the first thing she asked me was, 'Why did you come?' The next time she was conscious, she said, "I think you should go back because the Test match is happening," Ashwin told 'ESPNCricinfo' as he returned to the Indian team after his mother was stable. Earlier this year, India's bowling coach Morne Morkel was forced to make an abrupt departure from Dubai during the Champions Trophy, following a family emergency. Morkel flew back to South Africa on February 17, after receiving the news of his father Alberts' passing. His departure comes at a crucial moment, just days ahead of India's opening match against Bangladesh in the 2025 Champions Trophy. He later rejoined the Indian team in Dubai ahead of the side's final Group A match in Champions Trophy against New Zealand.
