4 Maoists killed, weapons seized following exchange of fire with Gadchiroli police, CRPF

Indian Express23-05-2025
Four Maoists were killed on the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border in a joint operation by the Gadchiroli police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Friday. A few weapons and related paraphernalia were also seized.
The operation, led by M Ramesh, Additional Superintendent of Police, Administration, and 12 C-60 parties (300 personnel) along with a component of the CRPF, was launched on Thursday afternoon from Kawande and Nelgunda towards the bank of Indravati amid heavy rain. C-60 is a special commando unit of the Maharashtra Police formed to deal with Maoists.
The action came after credible intelligence was received about the presence of Maoist formations along the border, near the recently opened Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kawande.
On Friday morning, when the cordon was being laid and the river bank searched, Maoists started firing indiscriminately at the C-60 commandos, which led to effective retaliation by the forces. The intermittent exchange of fire continued for almost two hours.
When the area was searched by the forces later, the bodies of four Maoists were recovered, besides one automatic self-loading rifle, two .303 rifles, and a Bharmar (locally made gun). Apart from this, walkie-talkies, camping material, Naxal literature, etc, were seized from the spot.
The area is currently being searched and further operations are on to locate the remaining Maoist cadres in the region.
The operation comes two days after 27 Maoists, including CPI (Maoist) general secretary Nambala Keshava Rao alias Basava Raju, were killed by security forces in an encounter in the Abujhmad area of Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district.
Basava Raju's death is believed to be a major blow to the Communist Party of India (Maoist), intelligence officials said, because he was the link between the northern and southern commands of the banned outfit.
The developments come against the backdrop of a deadline of March 31, 2026, set by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to eradicate Left Wing Extremism in the country.

Out bird hunting at night, Chhattisgarh man caught in ‘shootout between Maoists, security forces'

A 21-year-old tribal man, who had gone bird hunting on the night of August 14, suffered a bullet injury in his leg after purportedly getting caught in the crossfire during a shootout between security forces and Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district, officials said. The district had been declared Naxal-free by the Centre earlier this year. Abhay Netam and three of his friends had gone to hunt birds in the Nelajhar jungle, under the jurisdiction of Keshkal police station, on August 14 night. The group was carrying an airgun to shoot the birds. 'We left around 9-10 pm on a bike to hunt birds in a jungle area near our gram panchayat. We were going into the jungle, but it started raining and we decided to return. The (security) forces suddenly came and asked us to stop. But we got scared and began to hide. My group left. After one round was fired, I told the police not to fire, but they still fired at me. They then took me to hospital,' Netam told reporters. The Kondagaon police issued a press note regarding the incident, saying the security forces, comprising District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Bastar Fighters, had left on an anti-Naxal operation around 10.30 pm after getting information about the presence of Maoists in the Nelajhar jungle. The Maoists opened fire at the forces, after which the forces fired back at the Maoists, forcing them to retreat, the police said. During search operations, they found two Bharmar guns, Naxal uniforms and other items. At some distance from the encounter spot, they spotted an injured Netam and rushed him to the hospital, saving his life, the police claimed. Doctors treating Netam said he is now out of danger. 'He was brought to the district hospital at around 1 am after getting primary treatment at a Community Health Centre. When he was brought here, he was in shock and had lost a lot of blood. At around 2 am, a surgery was performed and he is now in a stable condition. The bullet pierced his pelvis and exited from the front. His pelvic bone is fractured and shattered,' Dr S Nagulan from the Kondagaon district hospital told the media.

4 Maoists with 19L reward surrender in Gariaband

Raipur: Four Maoists including a divisional committee member (DVCM) and those serving as protection team members for a central committee commander, surrendered before Gariaband police in Chhattisgarh on Sunday. Three of the surrendered cadres had joined the outfit as minors and are presently in their twenties. The divisional committee member Deepak alias Bhima Mandavi carried Rs 8 lakh bounty on his head, police said. According to Gariaband SP Nikhil Rakhecha, Bhima had joined the banned outfit at the age of 14 years in 2008 in Sukma district of Bastar division. He was associated with the cultural wing of the organizations, called Chetna Natya Mandli (CNM) that serves as influencing the villagers via entertainment and spreading the Maoist propaganda. He soon became Kistaram area committee commander in 2010 and further grew in ranks from Bastar to Gariaband district. Recently, in April this year, Bhima was promoted as DVCM. He was involved in 20-25 violent incidents in Dhamtari and Gariaband forests. His colleague in the same team was woman cadre Ranita who carried Rs 5 lakh bounty and was inducted in the Maoist ranks in 2016 by senior commanders at the age of 16 in Bijapur district. From Gariaband to Kalahandi in Odisha, she was also part of ambushes laid against security forces and fought in encounters too. Another woman cadre Sujata who carried Rs 1 lakh bounty had joined in 2023 for sentry duty. Police officials said the four cadres admitted they were disillusioned with the Maoist organisation due to its partiality by senior cadres from Andhra Pradesh with the tribal Maoists of Bastar, forced recruitment of children, harassment of villagers, destruction of development works and extortion from contractors. They stated that senior Maoists also used villagers as bonded labour and forced youngsters to join under threats. The surrendered ultras will be rehabilitated under the Chhattisgarh government's Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy, which provides financial support, housing, health care and livelihood assistance. Raipur: A huge cache of arms and explosives was recovered from the forests of Gariaband district of Chhattisgarh when a joint team inter-district police, CRPF and CoBRA had launched an anti-Naxal operation on Sunday. Cash worth Rs 16.5 lakh was seized from the site of encounter. The forces were combing the forests of village Gobra in Manpur region when a group of armed Maoists opened firing upon the security personnel and faced retaliation, said Raipur range inspector general of police Amresh Mishra. After brief exchange of fire, Maoists retreated into forests. Security personnel launched a search in the area and recovered a dump of arms and ammunition, that indicated Maoists were hatching a plan for an attack. The joint team of Dhamtari and Gariaband district police along with paramilitary forces collected the cache and brought it back to base at district headquarters, the official said. The seizure included INSAS rifles, country made weapons, pistols, revolvers, magazines of AK-47, SLR, INSAS and .303, and live rounds along with explosives like detonators, pressure cooker IED, laptop, walkie talkie set and large quantity of medicines, literature of outlawed Maoist organization and daily use items. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Police said the recovery points to the presence of senior Maoist cadres in the area and that the camp was being used as a logistics hub. It's believed that Maoists sneak into dense forests of Gariaband which they use for rest, hiding weapons and a movement route from Chhattisgarh to bordering Odisha. IG Mishra said that the entire operation was carried out with strict coordination between state police and central forces. Officials said the seizure has dealt a serious blow to Maoist activities in Gariaband, and search operations are being further intensified in the region. A case has been registered at Manpur police station, and investigation is underway. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
