Five reasons European giants are circling Sainz

Five reasons European giants are circling Sainz

Yahoo6 hours ago

The transfer rumour mill is whirring furiously at the moment and reports on Monday indicate that Serie A champions Napoli, as well as Portuguese giants Porto, are interested in a deal for Norwich City forward Borja Sainz.
The second-highest scorer in the Championship last season with 18 goals, Sainz enjoyed an impressive campaign overall - although he did court controversy due to a spitting incident in January, which earned him a six-game ban.

Although the Canaries ended up slumping to a 13th-placed finish in the English second tier, Sainz racked up some seriously impressive numbers last term, which may explain the current interest from heavyweight European clubs.
With that in mind, here is a countdown of Sainz's 'Top Five' strengths based on his statistics during the 2024/25 campaign...
Borja Sainz | A 2024/25 Stat Countdown
5. Creativity. In addition to his high output in terms of goals, Sainz featured in the Championship's 'Top 30' players for key passes last season. This ability to create for others saw him supply four assists during 2024/25 - his strike partnership with Josh Sargent yielding a combined 33 goals for Norwich in total last term.

4. Sharp-shooting. As we'll see, Sainz's shooting from distance is outstanding, but his shooting accuracy in general is very good. The forward hit a solid 10 more shots on target last season than any other player in the Championship and his shot-on-target percentage of 42% is high for a player who is certainly not shy of pulling the trigger.
3. Counter...productivity. All but one of Sainz's 18 Championship goals stemmed from open-play last season to underline the threat he offers from live situations and, further, he finished off threat goals via counter-attacks last term - his ability in transition possibly a key reason why he is attracting interest from around Europe.
2. Mazy dribbling. The 24-year-old Spaniard poses a threat with the ball at his feet and his 99 successful take-ons last term put him clear of any other player in the Championship. His dribble completion ratio of 46% was very respectable too.

1. An eye for the spectacular. The former Alaves and Giresunspor forward scored some belters last season and finished the season with four goals from outside the box, only Sheffield United's Gustavo Hamer netting more from long range. Sainz had already banged in three long rangers in the Championship in 2023/24, as well as a rocket against Liverpool in the FA Cup that season, so this ability to notch from remote positions is nothing new!

Where Napoli striker Osimhen would fit in at Liverpool

Liverpool recently made history when they once again won the Premier League title, marking it as their 20th top-flight tournament, and are reportedly in the running for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. Arne Slot has led the club to glory in the post-Klopp era, to the joy of football fans across the UK. Advertisement The summer transfer window is now in progress, and rumours are flying, with the Reds reportedly in conversation with top Serie A striker Osimhen. The 26-year-old striker from Nigeria played on loan at Galatasaray last year, where he was on loan. He scored 37 goals and 8 assists in his season of 41 games. He has clearly proven himself, and Liverpool is reportedly eager to get the Napoli player on their side. However, it's not just Liverpool that wants him; he is one of the most desired players in Europe. Manchester United is also looking to secure his commitment for their squad, but the reigning Premier League champs may just have the upper hand. Bookmakers in the United Kingdom are eagerly monitoring the summer transfer window as teams vie for the same players across Europe. Individual players can transform a team's trajectory in their leagues. Liverpool's sporting director Richard Hughes, along with Slot, has already signed Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong and is also eyeing Florian Wirtz (Bayer) and Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth). (Photo by) However, Serie A's Osimhen remains top priority for Liverpool. Reportedly, Liverpool 'held talks' with Osimhen last month, although he has not confirmed these rumours yet. Napoli are apparently willing to sell him according to the £63 million release clause in Osimhen's contract. This may be quite straightforward, but apparently, Osimhen is looking to earn £400,000 a week at whichever club he moves to, which can pose a challenge even for Premier League winners. Advertisement Osimhen is likely to fit in well at Liverpool. Slot has transformed the team's play, making their attacks more direct and structured. Osimhen's skill, movement, and goal-scoring abilities will pose him as a real threat against opponents, and also create more space for the defence to succeed. While on loan at Galatasaray, Osimhen proved his ability to perform under pressure. Galatasaray won their third consecutive Super Lig title in May, and Osimhen was key to this team. He is also the highest-scoring African player to have ever played in Serie A. He seems ready to take on the Premier League as a disciplined player. (Photo by) It seems like a defining moment for Slot's team. Liverpool's success can't be denied, but adding a legend like Osimhen to the team can set them up for many years of title wins in the future. Osimhen himself knows he is destined for something great, having rejected Saudi team Al Hilal (his second rejection to move to the Saudi Pro League) in an attempt to remain in the European leagues. His dream is to enter the Premier League or Champions League, having now succeeded in Serie A and Super Lig. If Slot and Hughes can pull off this signing, it will be the biggest signing of the summer. But Manchester is also waiting in the wings, and Napoli and Galatasaray are yet to speak out about Osimhen's future in their respective leagues.

Wrexham sign forward Ryan Hardie from Plymouth on three-year deal

Wrexham have signed forward Ryan Hardie from Plymouth Argyle. Phil Parkinson's side are preparing for their first season in the Championship for 43 years with Hardie the first arrival of the window. The 28-year-old has signed a three-year deal after an undisclosed fee was agreed between the clubs. Hardie leaves Plymouth after five years, during which the former Scotland youth international scored 74 goals in 248 games. Advertisement He joins a long list of senior strikers at the SToK Cae Ras as Wrexham prepare to kick-off life in the second tier following three consecutive promotions. 'To get a full pre-season will be a massive benefit,' says Hardie. 'To get integrated into the squad and learn the way the manager plays and get to know everyone will be important. 'The last couple of seasons, it's been a good experience in the Championship and it's experience I can lean on now. I've enjoyed playing there and I've managed to score a few goals so, hopefully, that can continue.' Hardie's two years in the Championship before Plymouth were relegated in May yielded 22 goals in 61 starts, plus another 16 appearances from the bench. With Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez finishing last season as the first choice partnership in a 3-5-1-1 formation, a number of Wrexham exits seem inevitable in the coming weeks. Even following the departure of Steven Fletcher and Sam Dalby this summer, Phil Parkinson still has seven strikers at his disposal as Hardie joins Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer, Jack Marriott, Mo Faal in the squad, alongside Smith and Rodriguez. Hardie, who joined Plymouth permanently in January 2021 after a couple of loan spells at Home Park, scored the penalty that last season knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup at the fourth-round stage. Inter Miami in four-way tie ahead of Porto game Thursday, but yellow cards could hurt

Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates were back at their training facility on a sweltering Monday morning, beginning preparations for their second Club World Cup game on Thursday in Atlanta against Portuguese team Porto. Miami finds itself in a better position than many experts predicted, locked in a four-way tie in Group A with one point as both opening games ended in scoreless draws. Inter Miami tied Egyptian club Al Ahly 0-0 at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday after a heroic performance by Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari before a crowd of 60,927. On Sunday, Porto and Brazilian power Palmeiras drew 0-0 at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey with a big game by Porto's backup goalkeeper Claudio Ramos, filling in for injured captain Diogo Costa. However, as it stands now, Miami is listed in fourth place among the four because after head-to-head, goal differential and goals scored, the next group tiebreaker is Fair Play Points (red and yellow cards). Inter Miami collected four yellow cards in the opening match (Tomas Aviles, Fede Redondo, Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez). Palmeiras and Porto got two apiece and Al Ahly just one. Inter Miami's star left back Jordi Alba, who missed the Club World Cup opener and the May 31 MLS game against Columbus with a hamstring injury, trained with the rest of the team on Monday, a sign he could be available to play against Porto. Midfielders Yannick Bright and David Ruiz, also recovering from hamstring injuries, trained separately. Center back Gonzalo Lujan (hamstring) was not on the field during the 15-minute media viewing period. Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano was encouraged by his team's performance on Saturday, particularly in the second half, when players settled their nerves and created several scoring chances. 'We are going day-by-day, we know that the next game the level will be higher because we are playing a European opponent, but I think we must keep in mind that its 11-v.-11, and even though we will face a quality opponent, anything can happen in football,' he said. 'We saw that in the first game, how things changed from the first half to the second when we took our time to move the ball and were committed to the plan.' Asked what Inter Miami needs to improve heading into the Porto game, forward Luis Suarez said: 'I don't think we need to improve anything. We just need to score a goal in the next game to calm down. We are putting pressure on ourselves because we want to show why we made it to this tournament. We want to compete. We want to win. 'We understand this tournament is tough, we know who we will face. This is a great moment to show what we're capable of as a team.' Security was beefed up Monday at Inter Miami's training facility in Fort Lauderdale, as German club Borussia Dortmund began training there and will be based there throughout the tournament. Dortmund's group games are Tuesday against Fluminense at MetLife Stadium, Saturday against Mamelodi Sundowns at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati and June 25 against Ulsan also at TQL Stadium. As for Inter Miami, after the game against Porto, the men in pink return to Hard Rock Stadium for its Group A final game against Palmeiras. Tickets for the 9 p.m. match are available at and secondary online ticket outlets such as Vivid Seats and StubHub. As of Monday, tickets for that game were starting in the $110-$120 range. Boca Juniors vs. Benfica Hard Rock Stadium will be rocking on Monday night, as Argentine club Boca Juniors, with its massive fan base, takes on Benfica of Portugal at 6 p.m. Thousands of Boca fans decked in royal blue and yellow gathered in North Beach Sunday afternoon to chant and dance at an oceanside 'banderazo' (pre-game pep rally).
