SEP recommends reservation in admissions for SC/STs, OBC students in private colleges and universities
'Gross Enrolment Ratio into higher education in Karnataka is found to be low among these communities, apart from other vulnerable sections of students. To promote higher education among these underprivileged sections, we have recommended regulations for reservation for admission for SCs, STs and OBC students in private higher educational institutions and universities,' said Prof. Sukhadeo Thorat, chairman, SEP Commission.
He recalled that during the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance-2 (UPA-2) regime, constitutional amendments were brought in and presently Article 15 (5) of the Constitution provided for reservation in admissions in private unaided institutions. 'But the provisions say that the States should form regulations for the same. This has not been implemented anywhere yet. Let it start from Karnataka itself,' Prof. Thorat said.
The commission chairman also said that Karnataka had one of the highest levels of privatisation in education.
'Around 60% of the universities and colleges are private or unaided, and 72% of the students are studying in these institutions,' he said, adding that the fees at these private institutions were high, acting as a barrier to many students.
'Therefore, we have recommended that students from lower income families who get admission in private and unaided colleges, should be provided financial support,' he said.
Rohith Vemula Act
The SEP Commission has also recommended that the State enact an anti-discrimination law in the form of Rohith Vemula Act, as has been the demand by several Dalit and progressive groups across the country, to deal with issues of diversity and discrimination in higher educational Institutions.
'This is an important issue. We have suggested a separate law that deals with diversity and discrimination issues, with regards to caste, religion, gender or any other form of discrimination,' Prof. Throat said.

Imagine this happening in 70-100 seats - it would destroy free elections," it says. "The Congress and INDIA have raised alarms before, including in Maharashtra. Now we have proof. We will fight this vote chori with all our strength. Join us to defend our democracy," the message on the portal reads.

Stronger laws needed to save women from domestic violence: Tamil Nadu State Women Commission
MADURAI: Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women chairperson A S Kumari said that 'stronger' laws are needed to protect women from domestic violence. Speaking during an interactive meet, 'Dalit women speak' in Madurai on Saturday, she said, 'Though there is a law, 'Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005,' we need stronger and effective laws to protect domestic violence victims. We see husbands who get punished for such crimes getting out on bail and indulging in the same violence, and this should be stopped at once.' She added, 'When I took charge as the chairperson of the commission, I used to get around 30-40 petitions and complaints every year, and these are mostly from rural places. I was surprised to see more women from villages strongly seeking justice and fighting against the cruelty they go through. I have seen them write the problems in pencils and submit them. We want more women to come forward and fight against their problems. We, along with the government and NGOs, are ready to fight for them and support them.' A Kathir, CEO of Evidence said, 'Women from rural areas are strong. A few years ago, I saw an elderly woman who was fighting for her was sexually harassed eight-year-old granddaughter in court. I even asked her how she was persistent despite the case being dragged on for so long. She said that if she loses interest, the culprits will get stronger, and that is pushing her forward.'

The certificate bears the signatures of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal and treasurer Ajay Maken. Several Congress leaders and supporters had registered on the portal and shared the certificates on social media. With Congress leaders amplifying the "vote theft" allegation of Rahul Gandhi, Election Commission officials on Saturday once again pressed the Leader of the Opposition to either sign a declaration to support his claims or apologise to the country for making "fake" charges. A day after Gandhi and the EC exchanged barbs over alleged vote theft in at least three states, poll authority officials again insisted for a signed declaration by the Congress leader to substantiate his claims.
