REFEREES and VAR are once again in the spotlight in the Scottish Premiership after late drama at Dundee - and fans haven't held back in their views.
Nick Walsh's controversial penalty award for handball by Antonio Portales in the 96th minute at Dens Park saw Ronan Hale net a last-gasp equaliser from the spot for Ross County.

It keeps the Staggies' hopes of avoiding the relegation play-offs alive but means St Johnstone's 16-year stay in the top flight has come to an end as their relegation is confirmed.
That has left many fans on social media perplexed and frustrated that the decision denied Saints the chance to pull off the great escape on the final day.
One fan said on X: "You get relegated over the course of a season and I accept that, but that scandalous decision from Nick Walsh has not only ripped away our chance to stay up on the final day, it's meant Dundee are still not safe.
"Never a penalty, typical that was what ultimately killed us."

Another added: "This is CRAZY officiating. How Nick Walsh has given this handball as a penalty in the first place. When he did give it, it's even worse that VAR didn't overturn it."
Some fans could see it from the other side and believe Portales left the referee with no option but to point to the spot.
Another fan pointed out: "I am sorry as a Dundee fan that is a penalty. Why does Portales lift his arm up once he had landed?"
Another one added: "Why does he bring his hand back up. All his own making."

Football pundit Michael Stewart though was unequivocal in his view, he said on BBC Sportscene: "It's a disgrace, let's not beat about the bush.
"The fact Nick Walsh gives a penalty in the first place is just unforgivable and for VAR not to intervene and overturn this is inexcusable. "
St Johnstone boss Simo Valakari on loving 'crazy' club owners, his Motherwell days and run-in with a Celtic hero
Former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew, who was also on the programme added: "It should never have been a penalty kick.
"Anyone that's played the game knows when you're running backwards and you jump you have to put your hands in the air.

"It's natural for your hands to be up there. He's gaining no advantage by the ball hitting his hand - it's going away from goal, it's a disadvantage if it goes back to his own goal."
The penalty also had repercussions for Dundee who are still in relegation trouble ahead of facing St Johnstone on Sunday.
Fuming Dark Blues boss Tony Docherty ducked the post match press conference after previously raging at officials in recent games against Motherwell and Kilmarnock so left it to his assistant Stuart Taylor.
He said: 'The manager chapped the ref's door, I don't know what was said.

'I think it's a great talking point for everyone after the last couple of weeks, so there's no point me saying any more.
'There's confusion and disbelief, but they're a great bunch of boys and they're robust.
'The manager gave the lads a great speech and got everyone ready for Sunday's game.

'It's in our hands at this moment in time. We are in a good position. If we take care of Sunday's game we'll be fine."
The point keeps Ross County alive ahead of facing Motherwell on the final day of the season, boss Don Cowie said: "I've not seen it from a really good angle.
"What will probably frustrate Dundee will be the manner. They win first contact and the ball is going out of the box.
"But his arm is out and by the letter of the law, it's probably a penalty.

"It's important we stopped the run of form we were on.
"We wanted the three points, but we are still fighting going into the last game."

East Kilbride land St Johnstone in cup: Big scalps last season show we'll have no fear in Premier Sports clashes, says boss

Kilby will take on the likes of St Johnstone and Raith Rovers in their cup section next month East Kilbride boss Mick Kennedy says his side hold no fears going into the Premier Sports League Cup groups this summer after pulling off some cup scalps last season. Newly-promoted Kilby are still riding the crest of a wave after reaching the SPFL last month and they are now looking forward to their first matches as a League Two club after the draw for the League Cup was made last week. ‌ Kennedy's side have been drawn in Group F alongside top seeds St Johnstone, who were relegated to the Championship last season, Championship side Raith Rovers, League One Inverness Caley Thistle and League Two rivals Elgin City. ‌ EK defeated the likes of Championship sides Airdrie and Ayr United in the Challenge Cup last term, so Kennedy believes they can punch above their weight again. Reacting to the draw, which will see Kilby host Saints at K-Park on July 12, Kennedy said: 'I look forward to these occasions because it gives us a chance to test ourselves against some big teams. 'Nothing changes in terms of our style of play, so they are always interesting occasions. I'm looking forward to it. 'It's a really good group. There's three full-time clubs in there so it will be a big test, but we showed last season that we can compete with Championship clubs on our day. 'St Johnstone is a massive game to kick us off after getting into the SPFL. I know they had an unsuccessful season and had a new manager come in, but I have a lot of admiration for [boss] Simo Valakari in terms of how his side plays. 'He is trying to implement a possession-based style of play so I think that will make for a good game between us. 'We will go to try and win all the games and we'll certainly show no fear.' With East Kilbride being involved in the end of season play-offs last term, Kennedy says they will need to use the cup as pre-season. EK are due to play one friendly on Saturday, July 5 against an as yet unnamed opponent before the cup campaign gets underway. League Two will kick-off on August 2. Kennedy added: 'We will try and get one friendly in before the cup starts but that will be our pre-season. 'We need to use the competition as our pre-season because we finished a lot later than the SPFL teams and the boys needed their break.'

Dundee are regular foes for Airdrie, says skipper as he eyes cup games

Adam Frizzell joked that he's played against Dundee 'four times' in his time at the Diamonds Playing against Dundee is almost a regular occurrence for Airdrie, but skipper Adam Frizzell is looking forward to their Premier Sports Cup group stages in July. Airdrie came through their group stages last season with wins over East Kilbride, Dumbarton and Queen of the South, while losing at Aberdeen, and came up against a strong Dundee side in the quarter-finals, receiving a 6-1 hiding. ‌ Airdrie have met the Taysiders in the League Cup and Scottish Cup in recent seasons, and kick off their campaign at Dens Park on July 12, with Frizzell joking about how often that has happened. ‌ But Airdrie also have games at home to Bonnyrigg Rose on July 15, at Montrose seven days later, and end with a visit from Alloa on July 26. Frizzell reckons it's a good way to monitor summer progress. 'Dundee again is something,' said Frizzell. 'I think I've played against them four times since I've been at Airdrie, and we've not been in the same division, which is mad. 'I love that cup format, so I look forward to that group, and it's something we've done well in, over the last couple of years. 'We'll be looking to make the last-16 again. ‌ 'It's very difficult to get through the group, actually, when you look at the teams that miss out. You need to win a minimum of three games out of four. 'When you're playing a Premiership team in one of those games it's very difficult, but we've done well in the past, and I love that competition, so it will be one I'm looking forward to.' Frizzell added: 'It's a good way to gauge your progress, and it's better than playing in the pre-season games, in my opinion. I don't think you get much from them, other than a base fitness, and you want to get right into the competitive stuff. ‌ 'I used to hate the long-winded pre-season, when you've got six or eight games – when you feel you're fit, you're ready to go there and then. 'That's why I really enjoy that format, you're right into the competitive stuff, and it gives you a good gauge of where you're at, playing against different teams. 'We had a couple of games at the tail-end of last season. We played Ayr United in the last league game, we were in no-man's land, so were they, they were waiting on the play-offs at the right side of the table. 'It was getting players up to speed again, boys getting minutes, and that's the way you feel in pre-season. 'But with these cup games it gives you a real idea of where your starting XI is at, and it's competitive games, which is what you want to play in.'

Bozo Mikulic comeback milestone revealed as St Johnstone defender is driven on by Perth club 'love'

Bozo Mikulic could be just two months away from a major comeback milestone, St Johnstone boss Simo Valakari has revealed. The Croatian defender suffered an ACL injury in February, the second time he has needed knee surgery in his career. His recuperation is progressing well, Valakari reported. The head coach is reluctant to predict a return ahead of schedule. But the current hope and expectation is Mikulic being able to run on the McDiarmid Park training pitches by August. 'Things are going well with Bozo,' said Valakari. 'He was here for five days at the end of the season, so it was great to see the big man back. 'He is now home in Croatia and will stay there until August, working at a clinic over there with his personal trainer every day. 'It is the same clinic where he repaired his injury the last time, which is good because they know him, and he knows them, so they have a plan of exactly what he needs to do. 'It's a very high-profile place, so he is in very good hands. 'If everything goes to plan, he will be running back on the field sometime in August. 'In my mind, I am thinking Christmas with him. 'I know he will say October but even then, you need some football inside you. 'So, it's by then I think we will have the proper Bozo back on the field.' The 'proper Bozo' was a centre-half winning headers, making tackles, scoring winning goals and, all in all, making St Johnstone a far more solid defensive unit. 'How we have missed him,' Valakari admitted. 'When he was back over here, Bozo was crying because of what happened. 'This club gave football back to him. 'He wasn't playing when we signed him, and he loves it here because he's got his career back again. 'We are looking forward to that because I know Bozo – he has the kind of mentality we need in our team. 'He is a leader, he has determination, and he is desperate to help this club.'
