Late goals, Jota tributes and racism claim as Liverpool wins Premier League opener

Defending champion Liverpool launched the Premier League with a dramatic 4-2 win over Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday in an emotionally charged match featuring tributes to Diogo Jota and a player reporting racial abuse. Strikes after the 88th minute by Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah sealed victory for Liverpool after the hosts squandered a two-goal lead. Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo put the Reds 2-0 up. In between those goals, the game was briefly paused after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported to referee Anthony Taylor in the 28th minute that he was targeted with racist language by a member of the crowd. Semenyo, who is Black, needed to be consoled by teammates after the alleged incident but played on and scored in the 64th and 76th minutes to draw Bournemouth level. It was the first competitive match at Anfield since Jota — a popular player for Liverpool — and his brother Andre Silva were killed in a car crash in Spain on July 3. Ahead of kickoff, fans held up placards to spell out 'DJ20' and 'AS30' in two of the stands during a period of silence in honor of the Portuguese players. ___ Steve Douglas is at ___

Nicolas Jackson to be left out of Chelsea squad for Crystal Palace game

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has confirmed Nicolas Jackson will not be involved in the club's Premier League opener against Crystal Palace on Sunday amid uncertainty over his future. Jackson, his representatives and Chelsea are exploring a possible move away from Stamford Bridge in the final weeks of the transfer window. Advertisement 'He is training with us but he is not going to be involved,' said Maresca at a news conference on Friday. Asked if he expected Jackson to leave, Maresca said: 'You know the situation already. The window is open, he can leave and we (will) see.' Jackson was also left out of the squad for pre-season wins against Bayer Leverkusen and Milan as potential moves away are explored. As reported in The Transfer DealSheet, sources at Chelsea say Jackson will be reintegrated into the squad if a move does not materialise. The club are not desperate to sell him, but recognise he might want to be the lead striker elsewhere, and are open to sanctioning a sale if the proposal satisfies all parties. The 24-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Villareal in summer 2023, started 28 of the 31 Premier League games for which he was available last term. However, he faces competition from new signings Liam Delap and Joao Pedro. 'When the transfer window is open, unfortunately or fortunately, anything can happen,' Maresca said last Thursday. 'This also involves Nico's situation. Two other strikers arrived, both of them were in the USA, Joao and Liam, so we will see what happens.' The Athletic also reported earlier on Friday that German champions Bayern Munich were in negotiations with Chelsea over a deal for forward Christopher Nkunku. The 27-year-old only made nine Premier League starts last season and, like Jackson, is exploring a move away from the club. Chelsea host Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Sunday at 2pm.
