"We welcome India's Candidacy to host COP 33 in 2028": BRICS declaration
In a joint declaration at the 17th BRICS Summit on Sunday, they also expressed their commitment to remain united in the pursuit of the purpose and goals of the Paris Agreement.
The joint declaration stated, 'We stress our commitment to uphold multilateralism as necessary to address challenges threatening our shared planet and future such as climate change. We resolve to remain united in the pursuit of the purpose and goals of the Paris Agreement and the objectives of the UNFCCC and call on all countries to uphold their existing commitmentas Parties to the UNFCCC and its Paris Agreement and to maintain and scale up their effort to combat climate change.
'We further reaffirm our steadfast commitment, in pursuit of the objective of UNFCCC, to tackle climate change by strengthening the full and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement, including its provisions related to mitigation, adaptation and the provision of means of implementation to developing countries, reflecting equity and the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities, in light of different national circumstances,' the declaration said.
'In this regard, we express our full support to the Presidency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP-30, which will take place in the city of Belem, in Brazil, highlighting the importance of action and cooperation on all pillars of the UNFCCC as applicable considering each country's membership and commitments thereunder. We also underscore our full commitment to a successful COP30 that will catalize progress in implementing the UNFCCC and its Paris Agreement. We welcome India's Candidacy to host COP 33 in 2028,' it added.
The leaders of BRICS nations call for a strengthened global response to climate change, in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. They endorsed the BRICS Climate Leadership Agenda as a statement of their resolve to exercise collective leadership through mutual empowerment, by advancing solutions that support BRICS development needs and priorities, while accelerating action and enhancing cooperation towards the full implementation of the UNFCCC and its Paris Agreement.
They stressed that this outcome demonstrates that multilateralism and Global South cooperation can shape a more inclusive and sustainable governance for a better future.
BRICS nations underscored the critical role of all types of forests. The joint declaration stated, 'We underscore the critical role of all types of forests, including tropical forests, for conserving biodiversity, preserving water basins and soils and providing timber and non-timber forest products of high value for economic sectors, regulating hydrological cycles, as well as combatting desertification and serving as vital carbon sinks.'
'We also take note of the United for Our Forests initiative, which promotes the conservation, sustainable management, and restoration of these essential tropical ecosystems. While appreciating the efforts of our countries to preserve rare species and noting the high vulnerability of big cats, we take note of the Republic of India's initiative to create an international Big Cats Alliance and encourage BRICS countries to work together to the conservation of big cats,' it added.
The leaders of BRICS nations emphasised the urgent need to reform the governance of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to ensure more balanced and equitable representation for developing countries, in line with the value of natural capital that these countries uphold.
They also expressed support for the simplification of procedures and the facilitation of access to resources, and the participation of those directly involved in the conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems, such as Indigenous peoples and local communities, including through improved voice and vote mechanisms and equitable access to decision-making bydeveloping countries.
The joint declaration stated, 'We commend Brazil's BRICS Chairship in 2025 and express our gratitude to the government and people of Brazil for holding the XVII BRICS Summit in the city of Rio de Janeiro.' The leaders also expressed full support for India's BRICS Chairship in 2026 and the holding of the 18th BRICS Summit in India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with other leaders, attended the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday. Brazil assumed the BRICS Chairship on January 1, 2025, with the theme 'Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance'. (ANI)

Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh) [India], July 13 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said Rs 1,543.16 crore has been transferred to the bank accounts of 1.27 crore women under the Ladli Behna Yojana scheme. His remarks came while addressing a program organised for Ladli Behna Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and Social Security Pension Scheme on Saturday. 'Rs 1,543.16 crore has been transferred to the bank accounts of 1.27 crore women under the Ladli Behna Yojana scheme... We are also providing help through the PM Ujjawala Yojana scheme and have provided Rs 46 crore and 36 lakhs of the subsidy...' he said. Meanwhile, CM Yadav took a holy dip in the Shipra river at Narsingh Ghat located in Ujjain district and offered prayers. 'I try to take a dip in the Shipra River every year here. It is an old spot and Narsingh Temple is located here, devotees come here to take a holy dip throughout the year, especially during the holy month of Sawan and earn virtue,' CM Yadav told reporters. Earlier, CM Yadav participated in the Kanwar Yatra in Ujjain and also showered flowers to welcome the Kanwar Yatris. Yadav also highlighted that the state government would ensure tight security arrangements for all Kanwar Yatris, along with appropriate facilities. He further added that instructions in this regard were already issued. The Chief Minister welcomed Kanwar Yatris with a shower of flowers. He also performed worship of Kanwar, lifted it, and along with Mahamandaleshwar of Agni Akhada, Uttam Swami, began Kanwar Yatra by walking on foot. The Chief Minister said that the tradition of celebrating all festivals with enthusiasm has been initiated by the state government. With the blessings of God and saints, preparations for Simhastha-2028 in Ujjain are being carried out rapidly. 'We are making all preparations with the thought that even if events like Simhastha are held every year after 2028, there should be no difficulty. Former Puri King objects to ISKCON performing Rath Yatra rituals
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], July 13 (ANI): The former King of Puri, Gajapati Dibyasingh Deb, has objected to ISKCON devotees celebrating Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra 'throughout the year' outside India, calling it 'inappropriate', thus against tradition and scriptures. He said talks are ongoing with ISKCON's head office in West Bengal to stop such practices. 'There is a specified date for that in our Sanatan Vedic culture, and it is celebrated only on Jyeshtha Purnima. We are seeing that the ISKCON is celebrating the birthday on different days abroad... This is inappropriate, against the scriptures and tradition. Shri Jagannath Mandir Puri is making efforts for this,' he told ANI. 'Whether it is the Rath Yatra or Snan Yatra of Lord Jagannath, the dates are decided by the Lord himself in Skanda Purana, Brahma Purana and different holy scriptures. The Snan Yatra is the day of his appearance,' he added. Earlier, Dibyasingh Deb said ISKCON had agreed to follow scripture-based traditions in India, and no violations were seen in recent years. 'After criticism, the Indian ISKCON agreed to celebrate the Snan Yatra and Rath Yatra as per the scriptures, and there has been no violation for two to three years. But outside India, ISKCON is celebrating Snan Yatra and Rath Yatra throughout the year. This is inappropriate, against the scriptures and tradition. Shri Jagannath Mandir Puri is making efforts for this,' he said. He added that discussions are underway with ISKCON's Mayapur head office to stop these practices abroad. 'Discussions are ongoing with the ISKCON head office in Mayapur, West Bengal, as to how to stop this. We hope that they get information and scriptural evidence from the Jagannath Puri temple and they stop this violation outside India, because this hurts the religious and spiritual sentiments of all the devotees of Lord Jagannath in the world,' the erstwhile king of Puri added. Asked about the long-standing restriction on non-Hindus entering the Jagannath Puri temple, he said any change must come from the Shankaracharya. 'Currently, there is no discussion regarding it. One needs to go to the Shankaracharya regarding this. This is a religious matter, and only a Dharmaguru can make any decision on it; only then can there be any changes. I cannot say anything about it. The established tradition is that only Hindus have the right to enter,' he said. The former Puri King also spoke about the increasing footfall at the annual festival and called on the government to provide better facilities. 'The number of devotees is increasing each year. This year, the no. of devotees during the Rath Yatra was nearly 15 lakhs. The government should make the required arrangements for accommodation, security and facilities. The no. of devotees this year was much more than expected. Lakhs of people attended the rituals during the nine days of the Rath Yatra. I am sure the state government will provide good facilities,' he said. His comments come after a stampede during the Rath Yatra on June 29, which left three people dead and several injured. On the decision to pull the chariots at night, he said there is no official restriction, but safety must be considered. 'As per the government directions, if the chariots reach near the temple, then they can be pulled during the night. According to the Skanda Puran, even in the night, the chariots should be pulled using thousands of torches, if needed and make the Rath reach the temple anyhow. There is no restriction on pulling the chariots at night. But for the safety of the devotees and to avoid mishaps, it is not appropriate to pull the chariots at night,' he said. On July 7, large numbers of devotees gathered in Puri for the sacred 'Adhara Panna' ritual, where Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, was offered a special drink on the chariot. The ritual is one of the most significant events of the Rath Yatra celebrations.(ANI)
