Shibu Soren, one of India's tallest tribal leaders and a founding force behind the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, passed away on August 4, 2025
Shibu Soren, one of India's tallest tribal leaders and a founding force behind the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), passed away on August 4, 2025, in Delhi. He was 81. Popularly known as 'Dishom Guru', meaning 'guru of the nation' in Santhali, Soren's life mirrored the evolution of Jharkhand itself: from grassroots rebellion to statehood, from insurgency to democratic politics.
Current Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, his son, confirmed the news in a post on X.
'Respected Guru Dishom has left us all. Today, I have become empty…" (sic), Hemant Soren wrote on X.
What Made Shibu Soren A Tribal Icon?
Soren was not just a politician; he was the face of a movement. Revered as Dishom Guru, he spearheaded the tribal resistance to the Mahajani system, a deeply exploitative network of moneylenders who preyed on Adivasi communities. Soren's leadership during this period earned him legendary status in the Santhal belt, where he actively opposed non-tribal encroachment and feudal landlords.
He made Dumka his political base, winning the Lok Sabha seat from the region eight times, and turning the area into a JMM stronghold.
Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemhra village in Hazaribagh (now in Jharkhand), Shibu Soren lost his father, Somlang Soren, a schoolteacher, to violence in the 1960s. The incident deeply shaped his worldview and set him on a path of activism.
By the late 1960s, he had already founded the Santhal Sudhar Samaj and established an ashram at Tundi block in Dhanbad to mobilise tribals and take on exploitative structures. His fight was aimed not just at landlords, but also at institutional neglect and discrimination against Adivasis.
When Did His Political Career Begin?
Soren formally entered politics in 1971, when he was appointed general secretary of the newly-formed Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Over the next five decades, his career would see multiple parliamentary victories, Union Cabinet berths, and three terms as Jharkhand's Chief Minister.
Shibu Soren's Political Timeline: Key Milestones
What Were The Major Controversies?
Soren's career was not without turbulence. In 2006, he was convicted in the kidnapping and murder of his personal secretary, Shashinath Jha. The case dated back to 1994, when Jha was abducted from Delhi and killed in Ranchi. Soren was forced to resign from the Union Cabinet and was jailed. However, he was later acquitted by the Delhi High Court.
He also survived a bomb attack in Dumka in June 2007, allegedly while being transported to prison.
What Was His Health Condition In Recent Years?
Soren's health had been deteriorating over the last two years. Notable incidents include:
Feb 2023 & Sept 2023: Hospitalised with respiratory issues; diagnosed with lower tract infection
Feb 2025: Admitted to Medanta Hospital in Ranchi for breathing difficulties, then shifted to Delhi
June 2025: Hospitalised at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi
August 2, 2025: Placed on ventilator support
August 4, 2025: Passed away in Delhi, aged 81
Political Legacy
Shibu Soren's legacy lies in his role in the creation of Jharkhand, his mobilisation of tribal identity, and the political empowerment of historically marginalised communities.
From the forest rights movement to the fight against moneylenders, and from statehood agitation to national politics, Soren embodied the evolution of Adivasi political voice in India.
His son, Hemant Soren, continues to lead the JMM and serve as the state's Chief Minister, inheriting both the political mantle and the expectations of a movement his father helped build from scratch.

End ‘inhuman' hand-pulled rickshaws in Matheran: SC

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered immediate phasing out of hand-driven rickshaws in Maharashtra's hill town of Matheran within six months, observing that continuation of such an inhuman practice in a developing country like India violates human dignity and betrays the constitutional guarantee of social and economic justice to all citizens. End 'inhuman' hand-pulled rickshaws in Matheran: SC Dealing with an issue concerning plying of e-rickshaws in Matheran, one of the few towns in the country where vehicular traffic is prohibited, the top court was informed that to service the transportation needs of about 8 lakh tourists visiting the hill station annually and over 4,000 residents living in the town, hand-driven rickshaws are still in vogue. The bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan R Gavai said, 'Continuing such practice even after 78 years of independence and after 75 years of the Constitution being enacted promising social and economic justice to its citizens, would be betraying the promise given by the people of India to themselves.' Granting six months for the state to phase out hand-rickshaw pullers and in the meantime, framing a scheme for their rehabilitation, the court further held, 'We direct the state to forthwith stop plying of hand-held rickshaws in a phased manner and in any case within six months.' The court noted that persons pulling hand-held rickshaws are victims of circumstances who have no alternate source of livelihood and such practices were held to be against the goal of social justice by the top court in a 1980 decision in Azad Rickshaw Pullers union v State of Punjab. 'It is really unfortunate that after 45 years of the decision of this court, the inhuman practice of a human being pulling another human being is still prevalent in the town of Matheran…Permitting such an inhuman practice which is against the basic concept of human dignity in a country like India, which is a developing country, belittles the constitutional promise of social and economic justice,' the bench held. The court was conscious that ending this practice will entail depriving them of their source of livelihood. The court noted that with advancement of technology, e-rickshaws are now available which are eco-friendly and operate on batteries. The court directed the Maharashtra government that while evolving a scheme for rehabilitating the hand-held drivers, the state must consider a novel scheme launched by Gujarat government in Kevadia, where e-rickshaw licenses on hire has been provided to local Adivasi women who ferry tourists visiting the town to witness the Statue of Unity - a massive 600-feet statue of Sardar Vallabbhai Patel, and the Sardar Sarovar dam. The court asked the state to consider giving priority to hand-held rickshaw pullers in getting the licenses for e-rickshaws and also consider tribal women among other needy persons in and around Matheran. The court was assisted in passing the order by senior advocate K Parmeshwar assisting the court as amicus curiae who insisted that only 20 e-rickshaws should be permitted for now. The court further permitted laying of paver blocks on the main city road from Kasturi Naka to Shivaji Statue (4-km long stretch) without any concrete bedding to ensure the roads are motorable by rickshaws, horse carts even during monsoons. The hand-held rickshaw pullers and horse-cart pullers were represented by senior advocate Shyam Divan and advocate Nina Nariman who took the court through the adverse effects of concreting the roads. However, the court permitted no paver blocks on the internal town roads and the trekking route. The court allowed the state to consider sponsoring the e-rickshaw scheme through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative or any other scheme but clarified that non-availability of funds will not be treated as an excuse for not implementing the scheme. Matheran located in the Western Ghats was declared an eco-sensitive zone by the Centre in 2003 and is home to several species of flora and fauna including the bonnet macaque, Hanuman langur, Malabar giant squirrel, and barking deer among others.

M Kharge's Jagdeep Dhankhar Reference To Push For Debate On Bihar Voter List

Quoting former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar that "anything can be discussed in the House", the INDIA bloc, led by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, on Wednesday demanded an urgent debate in Parliament on the Bihar voter roll revision exercise. Mr Kharge accused the government of manipulating the electoral system. "Opposition MPs have been repeatedly asking for an urgent discussion in the House... I am writing to request you to immediately allow a discussion on this issue that is of paramount concern to crores of voters, especially those belonging to the weaker sections of the society," Mr Kharge said in his letter to Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh. The Election Commission released the draft rolls comprising 7.24 electors out of 7.89 existing voters after extensive enumeration exercise known as Special Intensive Revision (SIR). About 65 lakh voters have been left out from the the draft electoral roll exercise, knowns as Special Intensive Revision (SIR), published on August 1. This included 22 lakh deceased electors (2.83 per cent), 36 lakh (4.59 per cent) who had permanently shifted or not found and seven lakh (0.89 per cent) who had enrolled at more than one place, the EC data showed. At a press conference in Vijay Chowk, Mr Kharge criticised the government's motives, stating, "The government is manipulating the electoral system according to its own convenience. In Maharashtra, a huge number of voters were added, while in Bihar, names are being deleted, including those of Dalits, Adivasis, migrants, MGNREGA workers, and minorities. This is a clear attempt to doubt the citizenship of these people." My letter to the Hon'ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, seeking an urgent discussion on SIR. Sharing excerpts of the same — 'The Special Intensive Review of the electoral rolls is being undertaken by the Election Commission of India first in Bihar and to be taken up in West… — Mallikarjun Kharge (@kharge) August 6, 2025 Mr Kharge cited a 2023 remark by former Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar who had said "the House is authorised to debate anything under the sun and under the planet" to counter the Deputy Chairman's stance against the debate. He added, "The government has adopted unconstitutional means to implement SIR and is now denying the Opposition an opportunity to debate." Congress leader KC Venugopal echoed the sentiment, saying, "If the Election Commission unilaterally takes away voting rights, where can citizens express their sentiments? We will march to the Election Commission office on August 11 to demand answers." This morning, members of the INDIA bloc held a protest march inside Parliament premises. Holding a banner stating "discussion not deletion," the MPs called for a withdrawal of the SIR and pressed for a dialogue on the matter. Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has defended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls as a necessary, constitutional measure to ensure voter list integrity by removing ineligible entries and including eligible citizens, while addressing opposition concerns through transparency and a claims-and-objections period.

J'khand MP, Cong MLA demand Bharat Ratna for Shibu Soren

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Ranchi, Aug 6 (PTI) Jharkhand Rajya Sabha MP and JMM leader Mahua Maji on Wednesday demanded that former chief minister Shibu Soren be posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna. She made the demand a day after the final rites of the JMM co-founder, who breathed his last at a private hospital in Delhi on Monday. 'I don't think there is any other tribal leader of his (Shibu Soren) stature in the country. Given his struggle, movements and sacrifices for the uplift of the deprived, oppressed, poor and tribals, he should have been awarded the Bharat Ratna long back. We will appeal to the Union government for it," Maji told reporters. Stating that Soren was a people's leader, Maji said, 'An era has come to an end with his demise. His name will always be written in golden letters in Jharkhand. He should be awarded Bharat Ratna," she added. On Tuesday, Bihar MP Pappu Yadav and Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari had demanded Bharat Ratna for Soren in recognition of his contributions to the uplift of tribals.
