What can the Dallas Mavericks tell us about the future of the Boston Celtics?
What can the the current state of the Dallas Mavericks tell us about the future of the Boston Celtics? From how the sale of the Mavs can give us insight into the future of the management of the roster (and who might be doing it) to everything the Celtics should want to avoid (trading away a younger star for an aging, injury-probe star, as an example), there are a ton of insights that Dallas can provide for fans of the Celtics in this important transitional moment for the storied ball club.
The hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast, Alex Goldberg, Cameron Tabatabaie, and Justin Quinn, linked up with ESPN senior reporter Tim McMahon to talk about his new book, 'The Wonder Boy: Luka Doncic and the Curse of Greatness,' what it can tell us about the future of Boston's roster and front office, and who might emerge from the West to make the 2025 NBA Finals.

Amari Williams signs two-way contract with Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics signed second-round pick Amari Williams to a two-way contract on Friday, according to the NBA's transaction wire. The Celtics now have three players on two-way contracts for next season, with Williams joining fellow second-round pick Max Shulga and the recently acquired RJ Luis Jr. Boston drafted Williams with the 46th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft out of Kentucky. The 23-year-old big man played just one season for the Wildcats after starting his college career at Drexel, but he stuffed the stat sheet throughout his year in Lexington. Williams averaged 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks over his 36 games -- all of which were starts. Williams is a bit older, but he's bringing a lot of upside to the Boston organization. He's got good size at 7-feet and 260 pounds, and was widely considered the best passing big man in this year's draft thanks to his excellent court vision. Williams has a great motor and can get down court in transition, and also has the ability to run the break thanks to his elite passing abilities. Williams also brings a lot of defensive potential to the table, with a 7-foot-6 wingspan that will help him protect the rim. At Kentucky, he had a knack for blocking a shot and starting the fastbreak for the Wildcats. He's going to have to tap into all of his potential to stay in Boston, as Williams will likely spend most of the season in the G League with the Maine Celtics. But he could potentially carve out some playing time in the NBA, given Boston's precarious situation in its frontcourt heading into the 2025-26 season. The Celtics now have 18 players on their offseason roster after signing Williams. A dozen players on are on guaranteed deals, while Jordan Walsh and Neemias Queta are both on partially guaranteed contracts. Hayden Gray is on the squad on an Exhibit 10 contract, while Williams, Shulga, and Luis Jr. are all on two-way deals. With the offseason departures of Kristaps Porzingis and Luke Kornet, and with Al Horford still mulling his future, Boston is a bit thin in the frontcourt. The Celtics' big-man group currently consists of Queta, Luka Garza, Xavier Tillman, and Chris Boucher, with Williams looking to work his way into the mix on his two-way deal.

NBA considers Bucks, Pacers as Thunder rivalries for 2025-26 Rivals Week

It's August, which means the NBA has released its 2025-26 regular season schedule. In one of the more fun days of the league's calendar, all 30 teams learned when and where they'll play their opponents in the upcoming campaign. The Oklahoma City Thunder learned that they'll be a household name. The schedule-makers have rewarded the NBA champions with 34 national television games. That's tied for the most in the league with the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks. Not bad for a small market. The Thunder had one of the greatest seasons the NBA has ever seen the past year. They had a historic 68-14 regular-season record, which featured the league record for point differential at a plus-12.9. The Thunder will be involved for Opening Night and Christmas. They'll also be included in the NBA's Rivals Week. To add intrigue during an otherwise mundane part of the season, the league has branded the Jan. 20-24 period as when rivals clash. The Thunder have two of their games highlighted during the event. Surprisingly, though, they're against teams that most fans would hardly consider as rivals. The two opponents left many confused as the NBA branded them as an OKC nemesis. The Thunder will travel to face the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, Jan. 21. The 8:30 p.m. CT tipoff will be broadcast on ESPN. The Thunder will then host the Indiana Pacers on Friday, Jan. 23. The 8:30 p.m. CT tipoff will be broadcast on Amazon Prime. Maybe you can spin some angles. The Thunder lost to the Bucks in the 2024 NBA Cup finals. On the flip side, they defeated the Pacers in seven games in the 2025 NBA Finals to capture the championship. Perhaps rematches for both prestigious matchups are enough to warrant being part of the NBA's Rivals Week despite zero bad blood. Even if you believed that, most fans won't buy it. The more likely explanation is that the NBA tried to include the Thunder in their week-long event and couldn't figure out the logistics to do it against a team that's actually considered a rival or, at the very least, in the same conference.

Kendrick Perkins shares harrowing death threat tale over Giannis Antetokounmpo ‘Robin' take

Kendrick Perkins' hot takes are getting people a little too worked up. The former NBA champion and ESPN personality revealed on the 'Road Trippin'' podcast with Channing Frye that Milwaukee Bucks fans went wild after he said that Giannis Antetokounmpo was the 'Robin' to Khris Middleton's 'Batman' during the 2021 NBA Finals. 'I started getting a death threat,' Perkins said during the podcast. 'It was going to my wife's account. This dude was sending me threat after threat. 'I am going to kill your kids. I know where you stay. I am going to murder you.' This was real life.' 3 Kendrick Perkins on the Road Trippin' podcast with Channing Frye and Allie LaForce. YouTube/Road Trippin' The fan took some serious umbrage at Perkins' characterization of Antetokounmpo and Middleton's roles — in Batman lingo — on the 2021 Bucks. 'I've been preaching time and time again that [Middleton is] the Batman of this team and Giannis is the Robin and look,' Perkins said in 2021, 'it's okay to be the Robin — people think that's a bad thing. It's not.' 3 Giannis Antetoukounmpo was caleld Robin to Khris Middleton's Batman in 2021 by Kendrick Perkinns. Getty Images Perkins shared the messages with ESPN and who helped identify the sender, who was later arrested. 'They found the dude and locked him up,' the ex-Celtics star said. 'This is true, and he was like, 'No, no. I wasn't serious.' Like, nah, motherf–ker, you're going to jail. Don't play like that.' Perkins' harrowing tale came as part of a broader discussion about gambling in basketball, in particular regarding Michael Porter Jr., who sent a scary warning to the NBA about fixing player prop bets. Porter's brother, Jontay, was banished from the NBA for manipulating his player props, pulling himself out of games with mystery illnesses or injuries so his Under wagers would win. 3 Kendrick Perkins revealed he received death threats for his comments about NBAE via Getty Images The new Nets' star expressed displeasure about death threats he had received from NBA bettors who threatened to kill him for not helping them win their bet. Perkins added some advice for Porter if he's receiving threats: tell the NBA and let them deal with it in the same way ESPN did for him. 'The work might be about basketball,' Perkins said, 'but the stakes can be much higher.'
