Doon teen tops NEET in U'khand after acing boards

Time of India14-06-2025
Dehradun:Seventeen-year-old Saransh Mittal from Dehradun has topped
NEET-UG
in Uttarakhand, securing an All India Rank of 69. Earlier this year, he also emerged school topper with 99.5% in his ISC board exams, declared on April 30.
Saransh, whose father is an orthopaedic surgeon and mother a paediatrician, says medicine felt like a natural path. "My interest in becoming a doctor developed gradually, but physics is still my favourite subject. I hope to become a neurosurgeon someday," he said.
His secret? Consistency. "I never set rigid targets—some days I studied more, some less. What mattered was showing up daily and staying focused," said the teen, who unwinds with piano or lawn tennis in his free time.
Despite also clearing JEE Advanced this month, Saransh never wavered from his goal of pursuing MBBS from the best institute possible. "We are very proud of his achievement and will support him wherever he goes," said his father, Dr Shashank Mittal.
This year, over 12 lakh candidates qualified NEET nationwide, with the highest numbers from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. Uttarakhand had 11,207 qualifying candidates. The state has 625 seats in five government medical colleges, 600 in private colleges, and 150 at AIIMS Rishikesh.

MBBS cutoffs in Maharashtra drop sharply as merit list announced

MUMBAI: Cutoff marks for MBBS admissions in Maharashtra have fallen significantly this year, with the State Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell attributing the slide to a tougher NEET paper and smoother seat approvals. MBBS cutoffs in Maharashtra drop sharply as merit list announced The CET Cell released the first merit list for 2025 on Thursday, showing the open-category cutoff for government medical colleges at 509 marks — down from 642 last year. In private unaided colleges, the cutoff dropped to 479 from 602. The CET Cell is conducting admissions for 8,138 MBBS seats across 64 colleges in the state. Officials said the decline is evident in both government and private institutions. While last year's higher cutoffs were partly due to an easier NEET paper, this year's exam — particularly its physics section — was considered more challenging. Experts noted that NEET's difficulty had been reduced during the COVID-19 years but has now reverted to pre-pandemic levels, depressing overall scores. Parents' representative Sudha Shenoy welcomed the trend, saying it would allow more students to secure government seats. She credited timely approvals for medical colleges — completed before the first merit list for the first time — as a key factor. 'This clarity reduced uncertainty and helped bring cutoffs down,' she said, adding that in previous years, delays in approvals often pushed up the first-list benchmarks.

Maharashtra medical admissions: first round of seat allotment announced for UG courses

The Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell seat allotment results for the first round of centralised medical admissions for undergraduate (UG) courses for the state quota seats witnessed a significant drop in cut-off scores for MBBS admissions in both government and private medical colleges. In government medical colleges, the cut-off score for MBBS admissions has fallen to 509 marks, down from 642 marks in the first round last year. In private medical colleges, the cut-off has dropped to 479, against 602 marks in 2024. Candidates, however, highlighted that this was an anticipated drop in the cut-off score due to the overall lower National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for Undergraduate (UG) scores this year — unlike the inflated scoring patterns observed last year. One candidate pointed out that there was score inflation in NEET UG last year due to a combination of factors. 'Unlike last year, when many students scored unusually high marks, this year's NEET UG results showed significantly lower scores. So, a drop in cut-off was expected. But this drop is still quite significant,' the candidate said. However, a parent representative Sudha Shenoy pointed out that this is a very low cut-off score in the past few years, especially in government medical colleges (GMC). 'Generally, private medical colleges would have a cut-off score around 509 for the first round of seat allotment. But this year, the same score is enough for a GMC seat in the first round,' said Shenoy. She attributed the change to a more streamlined admission process without any pending approvals for colleges or seats, this year. 'Last year there was chaos due to pending approvals for seats, despite inclusion of those seats in the seat matrix,' she said. As per the seat allotment for the first round of medical UG admissions by the Maharashtra CET Cell, a total of 10,815 candidates were allotted seats in this round, including 8,106 for MBBS and 2,709 for BDS. Students have until August 22 to confirm admission on their allotted seats. The total number of UG medical seats under the state quota stands at 10,856, comprising 8,138 MBBS seats and 2,718 BDS seats.
