Kyrie Irving on leaving LeBron's Cavaliers: 'It was just literally my time to move on'

NBC Sportsa day ago
There was a lot of drama around Kyrie Irving's exit from the LeBron James Cavaliers in the summer of 2017, just a year after they had teamed up to bring a title to Cleveland, with Irving hitting the biggest shot in Cleveland history. The spin at the time was that Irving was very unhappy his name came up in trade rumors and there was speculation — which was never backed up by any evidence — that LeBron had wanted Irving gone. Irving may never have wanted LeBron to return to Cleveland in the first place.
None of that is how Irving sees it — and he doesn't have any bad blood toward LeBron and would be open to playing with him again (which plays into some speculation about what LeBron might do next summer). Here is what Irving said on a recent Twitch stream.
'When you're playing with someone like [James], or somebody you like to compare him to, it's a different animal. It's a different journey, you're automatically expected to be at the top of the league. Every time you play with him it's going to be a lot of media attention, a lot of narratives, spun narratives, politics, a lot of s*** that people don't see in front of the camera. And for me I was just a young person trying to figure it out. It's not that I disliked playing with him at any time, it was just literally my time to move on.'
Irving went from being the favorite child and No. 1 pick in Cleveland to the No. 2 option next to LeBron, and on some nights the No. 3 option next to peak Kevin Love. That changed the dynamic for Irving, who was entering his fourth NBA season when LeBron decided to return to Cleveland from Miami.
'Being a young player, when you're on a team that's not winning a lot of games, it's a lot of bad habits that form, and that's what ended up happening to me when I was very young. I had a lot of bad habits. I was not a winner, I was not a good loser at all. I take my accountability, I had a lot of bad habits. That came from losing games and trying to get buckets all the time. I know it may have been beautiful for everybody to watch and getting all the highlights and accolades, but all I really wanted to do was win.'
Ultimately, Irving was traded to Boston, and what started well there ended poorly. Irving then signed with Brooklyn to team up with Kevin Durant on a roster that never lived up to its potential, and now he is in Dallas with Anthony Davis and Cooper Flagg (although Irving is expected to miss much of the 2025-26 season recovering from a torn ACL suffered last March). There is speculation about LeBron to Dallas in the summer of 2026 — fueled by his and Davis' simultaneous, cryptic Instagram posts — but we are a long way off from that potential reunion.
Just know Irving is in a different, and better, mental place than when these stars played together before.

All eyes on Dillon Gabriel, Browns QBs entering NFL preseason Week 2

Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz and Caroline Fenton discuss why the ongoing questions around the Browns quarterback situation is the top storyline to watch entering the second week of the NFL preseason. View more Video Transcript Do I have permission to take the lowest hanging fruit in the National Football League? The number one storyline that I am watching, and I think the number one storyline that all of America is going to be watching. The Browns quarterback situation. I mean, it has been the number one storyline in the NFL that just got that much juicier. Shadoor Sanders was out of practice on Wednesday and Thursday. He's been dealing with an oblique injury. And let me just say a side note, how many injuries are we going to deal with with the quarterback position in Browns' game? I mean, come on. But he's dealing with an oblique injury that left him out of practice and will likely leave him out of the Browns preseason game on Saturday against the Eagles. So we will see Dylan Gabriel, the Cleveland Browns' 3rd round pick, get the nod on Saturday. So this adds an even, you know, bigger, you know, a wrinkle, I guess is the right word, but adds another little layer into this Cleveland Browns quarterback situation because Shadoor Sanders went out and bawled. He dazzled against the Carolina Panthers in their first preseason game last Friday. What if Dylan Gabriel goes out there and does the exact same thing, quarterback controversy, even though that's a term that I, I absolutely hate, but that's gonna make this preseason that much more interesting. How do the Cleveland Browns decide to move forward? What if Dylan Gabriel struggles? What if it is clear what we see from Dylan Gabriel on Saturday that Shadoor Sanders should get the edge in that quarterback room? It's gonna be juicy, but no matter what happens, it's gonna make headlines and fits. I am here for that in the month of August. Yeah, no, look, you're right. One of our leads, I'll bet you by Tuesday of next week is what the depth chart look like for the Cleveland Browns at the quarterback position. It's just what all eyes are gonna be on. I root for success for everybody, so just like I wanted Shadoor to be great. I want Dylan Gabriel to be great too. And then all of a sudden Browns fans can try and figure out if they have. Two future starting quarterbacks. I will just remind everybody, as I have repeatedly, we keep saying the entire, not you, but the general population keeps saying that the entire quarterback room is hurt for the Browns. There's one guy named Joe Flacco who is going to be the week one starter that is still healthy. So Browns fans can get a little bit of a taste of it this weekend. Close

Cleveland Browns Rookie Reportedly Creating All-Pro Buzz, but It's Not Shedeur Sanders

A new report reveals one Cleveland Browns rookie has been stealing the show this summer. But it is not much-hyped quarterback Shedeur Sanders. There has been a huge amount of attention on the Browns' QB situation this summer. Because the team created an awkward situation by drafting not one, but two signal callers in April's draft. And added them to a QB room that already included Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Deshaun Watson. Yet, with no clear frontrunner, there has been a lot of focus on lighting road talent Shedeur Sanders. And his potential to force his way into the starting role with his performance. However, according to Sportskeeda's Tony Pauline, a completely different rookie has amazed coaches and likely locked up a Week 1 starting role. 'In conversations with sources and several players on the Browns roster, Carson Schwesinger has been the talk of camp this summer. Despite the media's seemingly never-ending focus on quarterback Shedeur Sanders.' The second round pick reportedly arrived at training camp with a humble and ego-free attitude, as well as a football IQ and work ethic that 'impressed coaches.' Furthermore, the linebacker only needed less than two weeks to learn the Cleveland Browns' defensive playbook front and back. The number of plays and the complexity of codes in NFL playbooks can take a long time for rookies to learn. However, it clearly was a breeze for the UCLA product. But he showcased his smarts in the pre-draft process, says Pauline. 'According to those who administered the [AIQ and S2 tests], Schwesinger's scores were comparable to those of Luke Kuechley, the former first-round pick of the Carolina Panthers who went on to become a five-time All-Pro as well as NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2019.' Pauline added that he is well-respected already by his Browns teammates and they view him 'as a throback type of defender.' As AT&T Stadium reopens for business, cheap seats at the Cowboys venue rank worst in NFL

Professional football stadiums have become modern architectural dreamscapes, adding to city skylines. An NFL game is a bucket-list item for football fans, however the monetary costs associated with attendance have become a burden unlike any other. These days the lower-level seats in secondary markets can cost nearly as much as someone's rent, and sometimes more. The Cowboys have some of the most expensive games in 2025 making it especially difficult to find great deals. Loud and vociferous fans are often relegated to the cheap seats. With AT&T Stadium's league-high seating capacity, a lot of those are available, but just how far away from all of the action are the fans? With a distance of 552.4 feet from midfield, Section 431, Row 22, Seat 1 is the furthest stadium viewing experience throughout the entire NFL. That chair is bolted down, as are the Cowboys who were named worst nosebleed seats in the NFL by If Dallas makes it to Super Bowl LX, fans will have to avoid Section 401, Row 28, Seat 1 at Levi Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers and host to this year's big game. That ranks as the second-furthest seat in the league at 539.1 feet. Cowboys fans must also avoid Allegiant Stadium's Section 421, Row 9, Seat 24 when they travel to Las Vegas in Week 11, which is the third furthest (530.9). Section 307, Row 26, Seat 29 at MetLife stadium is double-trouble for Dallas as the team travels face the Jets in Week 5 and Giants in Week 18.
