Kota Kinabalu: In a move to strengthen organisational governance and enhance financial oversight, the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Sabah has officially appointed Datuk Roger Chin Ken Fong—Chamber member and former President of the Sabah Law Society—as its Auditor General. The appointment was formalised on June 23, with MCCC Sabah President Datuk Dexter Lau, accompanied by Vice Presidents Jacky Chin Thau Chung and Lau Jiin Woei, personally visiting Datuk Roger Chin at the Chin Lau Wong & Co law firm to present the official letter of appointment. This strategic appointment is part of the Chamber's ongoing efforts to reinforce internal checks and balances, ensuring transparency, compliance, and credibility in financial management. As MCCC Sabah continues to expand and deepen external engagements, a sound financial review framework is becoming increasingly vital to its sustainable growth. 'Our Chamber places great emphasis on institutional integrity and governance,' said Datuk Dexter Lau. 'We are confident that with Datuk Roger Chin's professional leadership, the transparency and efficiency of our financial operations will be significantly enhanced—laying a stronger foundation of trust between the leadership and our members.' He added that Datuk Roger Chin's deep legal expertise, combined with his extensive experience in civic and public affairs, as well as his longstanding commitment to integrity, make him the ideal candidate for this role. 'With his support, we look forward to further standardizing our financial audit processes and reinforcing institutional oversight as we work toward modernizing and systematising the Chamber's governance.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warisan rep disputes the RM1 billion bond repayment

Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 Text Size: 'This shortfall was due to weak fiscal discipline before Warisan formed the government,' said Sarifuddin, accusing the minister of 'cherry-picking' records. Kota Kinabalu: Former Sabah assistant finance minister Sarifuddin Hata disputed State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun's version of the repayment of a RM1 billion State bond. He claimed that when Warisan took over in 2018, a year before the bond matured, the Bond Repayment Fund contained only about RM400 million or RM600 million short of what should have been saved under the previous RM200 million-a-year plan. 'This shortfall was due to weak fiscal discipline before Warisan formed the government,' said Sarifuddin, accusing the minister of 'cherry-picking' records. The Warisan Merotai Assemblyman said budget tabling did not mean allocations were actually deposited, and official records, undisclosed to the public, confirmed the 2018 balance was far below the target. He argued that if repayment was 'fully guaranteed' as claimed, there would have been no need for Warisan to urgently top up the fund. 'Warisan raised the amount to RM1 billion in under 12 months, while also covering interest that pushed the total repayment above RM1 billion , without taking new loans, cutting development, or burdening the public. 'This was not a routine matter but an effort to save Sabah's finances, protect its credit rating and credibility,' he said. Sarifuddin also claimed that Warisan implemented the sales tax on petroleum products in April 2020, gazetted under its administration. 'GRS was only able to claim the revenue because the first payment was received after they took over. The policy, groundwork and legal framework were entirely Warisan's,' he claimed and demanded transparency on how the bond proceeds were spent. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Pepper grower now harvests 600kg; 10 staff

Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 Text Size: A site visit to Maswan's farm. Inset: Maswan. KUNAK: A local pepper entrepreneur has turned his small-scale farming venture into a thriving business, creating jobs and boosting the community's economy through the Sejati Madani grant he received last December. With determination and drive to improve himself, 36-year-old Maswan Sulad began planting peppers on a modest plot but now operates a farm capable of producing up to 600 kilogrammes. 'I am very grateful to have been selected for the Sejati Madani programme as it has allowed me to expand the business and provide job opportunities for the community,' he said during the Kunak-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2025 programme at the District's Youth Arena. Initially assisted only by family members, Maswan now employs 10 workers who help produce his signature product, Sambal Barakunak. The entire process – from harvesting fresh chillies to processing and packaging – is handled by his team. He also supplies fresh peppers to local markets and the Tawau Central Market, where weekly demand is high. With the grant, Maswan has expanded his pepper farm, boosting yields to between 70 and 80 kilogrammes at a time. A fan of spicy food himself, he said peppers are a popular ingredient but can be challenging to grow due to pests, diseases and unpredictable weather. To overcome these issues, he adopted fertigation technology, which automates the delivery of water and fertiliser, with guidance from the State Agriculture Department and local farmers. He has also taken the initiative to learn both physical and online marketing to secure a place for his products in the market. Maswan also urged young people to step out of their comfort zones. 'If we do not try today, then when?' he said. Meanwhile, as the Madani Community Leader for Kampung Lormalong, he said residents have been actively decorating their village for the National Month, with thousands of flags lining the roads. 'This is the time for us to raise the flag and replace old ones as a sign of love for our country,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? He said the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government had laid out a clear development roadmap for the state, including Kinabatangan, through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) direction. The plan covers all aspects of growth, from strengthening the economy and education to improving community wellbeing, supported by achievements in industry, tourism and agriculture. Hajiji highlighted various state initiatives, including monthly aid of RM300 for a year to more than 10,000 low-income residents, and an increase in Rumah Mesra SMJ units to 40 for each state constituency, including Lamag and Sukau. He said the state government has also distributed 100 dialysis machines to government hospitals and clinics to provide free treatment for kidney patients. On the Seri Milian New Town project in Kota Kinabatangan, Hajiji said it would be a catalyst for change expected to transform the district over the next five to 10 years. During the event, he presented 255 Pantas draft grants for Lamag involving 582.426 hectares, a Kinabatangan District Council land grant covering 157.48 acres, and three Pantas draft grants for Sukau totalling 16.224 hectares. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
