Miami Dolphins for better, for worse? How Zach Sieler and 2025 DL compares to 2024

(Editor's note: This is part of a summer series on the Miami Dolphins. Each entry will break down a specific position group, examining how the 2024 unit performed. what's expected in 2025 and, finally, concluding which group is better, the 2024 version or 2025.)
Last year's defensive line
Zach Sieler
Calais Campbell
Benito Jones
Da'Shawn Hand
Matt Dickerson
How they performed
Quite well.
Sieler was named team MVP, completing a long journey from his days on the waiver wire.
Campbell was 38 years old but playing like he was 28, proving he too was a fine pick-up by Miami.
They combined for 15 sacks, 25 tackles for loss and 31 quarterback hits.
This year's defensive line
Sieler
Matthew Butler
Kenneth Grant (first-round pick)
Jordan Phillips (fifth-round pick)
Zeek Biggers (seventh-round pick)
Jones
Alex Huntley
Dickerson
Ben Stille
Outlook
Sieler is just hitting his prime and will give the Dolphins all he has both on the field and in the locker room. His leadership will be especially important with Campbell off to Arizona and three rookie draft picks to mentor.
Coordinator Anthony Weaver assured that Grant will fulfill his potential based on the work ethic he already has witnessed. Obviously there is no way to judge yet how selecting how Grant and Phillips will or won't pay off for the 2025 Dolphins and whether they can come anywhere close to the high standards set by Sieler/Campbell.
If Phillips and Biggers can contribute, a position of serious concern back when it was Sieler and not much else might hold its own after all.
Bottom line: Last year's model or this year's?
The Dolphins sound like they're going to ride Grant as far as he can take them when it comes to snap count. That's hard on anybody but especially true for defensive linemen playing in our early season heat.
As Weaver said, the rookies are bound to have growing pains, but it will be interesting to see their impact in 2025.
Last year's model or this years? Last year's.
You don't lose a veteran such as Campbell, who played at a Pro Bowl level, and not feel it.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander reacts to being NBA 2K26 cover athlete: 'A dream come true'

Like King Midas, anything Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has touched over the last year has turned to gold. The 27-year-old is fresh off one of the greatest individual seasons ever. An MVP award and a championship ring headlined his historic campaign. The Oklahoma City Thunder cemented their spot among the greatest teams ever. A historic 68-14 regular-season record translated into the playoffs with the manifestation of a championship. Now, there's no denying Gilgeous-Alexander is one of the best players in the league and is well on his way to being an all-time great. After the championship parade, the accolades kept piling up. He may need to build a second trophy case as his MVP, Western Conference Finals MVP and NBA Finals MVP awards were likely stuffed in the first one. To continue his offseason celebrations, Gilgeous-Alexander was also named the NBA 2K26 cover athlete. It's an honor only the NBA's best players have. Gilgeous-Alexander has skyrocketed to the top with three straight 30-plus point campaigns. It's only right that the Year of SGA gets to don the NBA 2K cover. After all, he's one of the highest-rated players in the video game. "It means the world. A game I grew up playing since I was young and can remember," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "To know I'm the cover of the game is a surreal feeling. A dream come true." Gilgeous-Alexander is an unapologetic 2K head. He always talks to Ronnie 2K about the game and gives him feedback. After hoping to land on cover art, the 27-year-old made it undeniable with such a historic season. "I was ecstatic. I was through the moon," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "Tried to hold back some tears." NBA 2K26 will release on Sept. 5. The annual game serves as a reminder to get basketball back in the mainstream after the offseason is about over. The Thunder and Gilgeous-Alexander will enter the 2025-26 season as a favorite to repeat as champions.

Notre Dame quarterback Kenny Minchey makes a bold proclamation following Friday's practice

Kenny Minchey after today's practice: "I'm capable. I believe I'm the best quarterback in the country."Minchey showed off the wheels a bit today with Gino Guidugli as the read defender. You love to see when your quarterback has extreme confidence, and Notre Dame's Kenny Minchey did exactly that on Friday following the second fall practice. When speaking with the media, the second-year player proclaimed that he believes that he's 'the best quarterback in the country,' as On3's Jack Soble posted on social media. It's a strong claim, but one that ultimately could come true. Minchey will have to beat out CJ Carr first, but having that kind of confidence will go a long way. Everything that we have seen from his during his limited playing time and in practices seem to suggest that he's got the skill set to lead the Notre Dame offense. He's got the running ability to make defenses account for his legs, and the throwing ability to pop the top off of a defense. It will be a very interesting battle between the two, as the competition continues this fall leading up to the season opener on the road against Miami. Head coach Marcus Freeman will have a very difficult decision to make, but Minchey is very confident in his abilities.
