Freddie Flintoff's ex team-mate 'couldn't stop crying' after seeing his horrific injuries
Freddie Flintoff's former cricket team-mate Steve Harmison was shaken by how badly injured the TV star was after an accident which took place while filming BBC's Top Gear
TV star Freddie Flintoff's long-time friend and former England cricket team-mate Steve Harmison has revealed he was left in floods of tears after seeing the devastating injuries Freddie suffered in his horror Top Gear crash.
A new Disney+ documentary called Flintoff, released last night, has exposed the full extent of the ex-cricketer's trauma following the 2022 smash at Dunsfold Park, Surrey — where the three-wheeled Morgan Super 3 he was driving flipped and dragged him along the track. Flintoff sustained severe facial injuries in the accident, which required multiple surgeries.
Steve Harmison, who first met Freddie in 1996 and retired alongside him in 2009, said the photos he received before surgery were so harrowing that he "couldn't stop crying".
Speaking on talkSPORT, Harmison recalled: "When he sent them to me, I didn't stop crying for a long, long time. He's lucky to be still with us. He's lucky he's been patched up and they've done a wonderful job. His confidence is back and it's great to see him back in cricket."
He added: "It was a difficult time for him and for Rachael [Freddie's wife] and the kids. He was always image conscious." In the documentary, Freddie himself bravely opens up about the psychological toll of the crash — admitting that, in his darkest moments, part of him wished he hadn't survived.
"After the accident, I didn't think I had it in me to get through," he said. "This sounds awful: part of me wishes I had been killed, part of me thinks, 'I wish I had died'. I didn't want to kill myself, don't mistake the two things, but I was thinking, 'this would have been so much easier'."
He went on to reveal the fear he felt in the moments after impact, adding: "My biggest fear was I didn't think I had a face. I thought my face had come off."
Surgeon Jahrad Haq, who treated Flintoff, previously described the injuries as among the most complex he had ever seen. Freddie suffered broken and lost teeth, fractured jaw bones, and lost significant portions of his upper and lower lips, including underlying muscle.
The crash sent shockwaves through the Top Gear production team and viewers alike. The show has since been "rested" by the BBC, who later reached a multi-million pound settlement with Flintoff.
Despite the trauma, Freddie has returned to public life — initially behind the scenes with the England Lions cricket squad but now he is back in the spotlight through his documentary.
Harmison, who features in the film, said hearing Freddie express his dark thoughts was "heartbreaking", but he's proud of how far his friend has come since.
Freddie's wife has admitted she had to 'pull herself together' after seeing him post-crash as she was so horrified by the extent of his injuries, but did not want the sportsman to be frightened by her reaction. She added: "I just didn't cry. I didn't, I just said, 'it's fine. You're gonna be okay. I can't believe how amazing you look'."

BBC viewers say 'I gave it a try' as they 'switch off' Death Valley within minutes
BBC viewers say 'I gave it a try' as they 'switch off' Death Valley within minutes The third episode of Death Valley aired on BBC One on Sunday evening, and it was safe to say that viewers were far from impressed Death Valley: Official trailer Death Valley's third episode left some viewers "switching off" on Sunday night. The episode, which aired on Sunday (June 8), saw John Chapel (portrayed by Timothy Spall) and DS Janie Mallowan (Gwyneth Keyworth) investigating the premature death of a best man, reports the Express. However, it seemed to attract attention for all the wrong reasons. One disgruntled viewer took to social media to vent their frustration: "What on earth is this s*** #DeathValley. "No wonder everyone is talking about it... It's utter drivel and woke toboot. Refund the BBC if this is the best they can s**t out." Another chimed in, " I heard it was bad, but jeez, it's horrendously bad. The lead lady is so irritating, and the script is chronically unfunny. It's a new low for BBC Sunday night viewing, absolutely horrendous." Death Valley was swamped with complaints (Image: BBC ) Article continues below One viewer even admitted to turning off the programme, stating, "Caught up with #DeathValley on BBC1. I love stuff staring Timothy Spall but just had to turn off after a few minutes due to the awful co-star detective played by Gwyneth Keyworth shouting all the time. She must be one of the most annoying TV characters ever." A fourth viewer echoed these sentiments: "I'm on the third episode of "Death Valley" - I really gave it a try, but it really doesn't get on me. I can't stand the main characters, they are cringe... in general I really like those shows, but this I'll skip and that Ludwig will return soon." (sic) Someone else declared: "#DeathValley on BBC1 is one of the worst programmes I've ever sat through!". Despite the mixed reviews, Death Valley drew in nearly three million viewers on its debut (Image: BBC ) In contrast, some viewers expressed their enjoyment of the series, with one spectator stating: "I know a lot of people seem to enjoy slagging off #DeathValley, and I admit that when I saw the initial trailer, I thought it looked poor. "However, having binged the series the other day, I can quash my original reticence & say that I loved it. Daft, funny, cosy & Welsh." Another added: "Enjoying #DeathValley too. It's Sunday night viewing and I remember 'By the Sword Divided' and 'The Pallisers' so this is quite fun." Jeremy Clarkson lets rip at pilot who buzzed his Diddly Squat farm four times while practicing aerobatics in foul-mouthed outburst
Jeremy Clarkson has let rip at a pilot who buzzed his Diddly Squat farm four times while practicing aerobatics. The former Top Gear host, 65, took to Instagram to complain about the noise in a foul-mouthed outburst after ex-RAF ace Mike Edwards continuously looped his property. Jeremy purchased Diddly Squat Farm in Oxfordshire back in 2008 and it's since been the focus of his popular Amazon Prime show Clarkson's Farm. However, the star took umbrage at Mike choosing his farm over which to practice his moves in a vintage plane, reports The Sun. Taking to Instagram, Jeremy shared the flight path of the Pitts Special S2A showing that it had spent seven minutes circling his farm at 172mph. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Lashing out at the incident, which occurred on May 3, Jeremy fumed on Instagram: 'Fit it with a f***ing silencer.' Meanwhile, British Airways captain Mike, 57, revealed he has apologised to the Grand Tour star over the drama. He told The Sun: 'I've written to Mr Clarkson to say I'm sorry and didn't mean to cause any problems. 'I was practising my aerobatics, going up to 2,000ft and doing loops and rolls — using a railway line as a guide.' He continued: 'As a professional pilot of 40 years, safety is at the heart of all I do. That's why I practise the routines nice and high and try and get away from people. I live down the road so I wouldn't want to annoy my neighbours with the noise.' Mike went on to say that he'd be happy to show Jeremy his farm from the sky if he requested. It comes after Jeremy banned a customer from his pub for complaining about the high prices on his menu - and it's not for the first time. Fellow customers now barred from stepping inside Clarkson's pub The Farmers Dog in Asthall, Oxfordshire include Keir Starmer, James May, and Richard Hammond. But the most recent customer to incur the wrath of the former Top Gear presenter is not quite as famous. The spat occurred after one customer accused the TV presenter of not caring about his customers. They took to X to share their shock at paying £24 for a pie and vegetables and wrote: 'Thought @JeremyClarkson wanted an affordable pub for customers. £24 for pie and veg is a bit much.' And another X user piled on, claiming they couldn't wait for cheaper US cuts of beef to bring down the price. The spat occurred after one customer accused the TV presenter of not caring about his customers by charging them £24 for a pie and some vegetables They wrote: 'Dead weight for British beef is far too expensive £6.89/kg for R4L down from the record high £6.98/kg earlier in the month. 'I can't wait till we get US beef cuts here because British beef industry is now taking the piss at those prices.' And the suggestion didn't go down well with the Clarkson's Farm show host who simply wrote: 'You are now banned from the pub.' Since it opened last summer, Clarkson has made sure to only use British products in his meals but his approach has not always gone down well with customers.
