GTA 6 is 30fps and ‘too big' for Switch 2 claim tech experts
Although there's no unedited gameplay of GTA 6 yet, it's already believed the game's impressive visuals are stuck at 30fps.
If there's one thing you can take away from the newest GTA 6 trailer, it's that its visuals look really good. The graphics alone are impressive, but it's also clear a lot of work has gone into the lighting, ray-tracing, and rendering for what seems to be the best-looking video game ever.
While Rockstar Games has yet to share unedited gameplay, it has said that the trailer contains a mixture of gameplay and cut scenes. Given how indistinguishable the two are, GTA 6 is set to be a technical marvel when it comes out next year, on May 26.
However, those who prefer their games running as smoothly as possible best temper expectations for GTA 6's frame rate, as it's believed all the footage in the trailer was captured at 30 frames per second.
Although performance specs have not been confirmed by Rockstar itself, the team at Digital Foundry does not believe GTA 6 will be capable of running at 60fps on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S when it launches.
In a video breaking down the new GTA 6 trailer, Digital Foundry highlights some incredible attention to detail, with particular praise going to the ray-traced reflections and hair rendering.
While he'd love to be wrong, senior staff writer John Linneman believes, as a result, GTA 6 will be locked to 30fps.
Video producer Alex Battaglia points out that some games enable features for cut scenes to make them look better visually, which are then turned off for gameplay so it can run at a higher frame rate.
But he does not think this is something Rockstar will do for GTA 6, especially with regards to the ray-tracing technology, since it's all over the trailer and likely something the game was built with in mind.
'You can't get rid of RTGI (ray traced global illumination). It's inherent to the way the game works. Even getting rid of RT reflections potentially could make scenes look quite a bit different…' explains Battaglia.
'As soon as you have ray-traced global illumination, a massive open world… those things tend to not run well at 60fps,' he adds, concluding that, at best, GTA 6 could run upwards of 40fps.
You also have to remember that Rockstar needs to get the game running on the Xbox Series S, which is a deliberately weaker console and needs to have feature parity with the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions. Although if anyone could negotiate an exception with Microsoft it'd be Rockstar.
It's for the same reasons that the team don't expect to see GTA 6 coming to Switch 2, describing it as 'too big', with Battaglia saying he doesn't think it could run on a Steam Deck either, if/when the game comes to PC.
While Digital Foundry doesn't broach the subject, many fans have expressed hope that GTA 6 could run up to 60fps on the more powerful PS5 Pro, with some imagining a bundle and specific marketing tie-ins. More Trending
However, the PS5 Pro isn't that much more powerful than the standard console, when it comes to frame rate, so any improvements would likely focus on the resolution.
At best the 40fps mode (which won't make much difference) may be a PS5 Pro exclusive.
None of this will come as a surprise to more technically savvy gamers, especially as it's rare for open world games to ever run at 30fps.
Given how many different formats GTA 6 was released on though it's very easy to imagine 60fps being implemented for the inevitable PlayStation 6.

Nintendo Switch 2 officially breaks record for fastest-selling console ever
Nintendo has announced the worldwide sales figures for the Switch 2 after four days, and they're more than any other console in history. After insiders claimed the Switch 2 was set to break worldwide sales records, Nintendo has confirmed the console has done exactly that. In a post on X, Nintendo announced the Switch 2 has sold over 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days, making it not only the fastest-selling Nintendo console ever but the fastest-selling console of all time. This means the Switch 2 is already outpacing the original Switch, which managed 2.7 million units within its first month in 2017. Nintendo set a target of 15 million sales for the Switch 2 by the end of March next year, and if stock remains plentiful, these early figures suggest it will surpass that number easily. While Nintendo has only talked about the console's sales in terms of the company's own history, it appears to be the fastest-selling console ever. The PlayStation 5 shipped (not sold) 3.4 million units within its first four weeks, while the PlayStation 4 sold 2.1 million units within its first month. Sony's PlayStation 5 was subject to significant stock shortages amid the pandemic, so the Switch 2's success is a reflection of Nintendo's efforts to ensure there's plenty of supply. Prior to launch, Nintendo said it planned to have enough consoles to counter scalpers, and it seems like that strategy has worked. As for UK numbers, the Switch 2 is the fastest-selling Nintendo console ever in the country, but it is the fourth overall behind the Xbox Series X/S, the PlayStation 4, and the PlayStation 5. The UK has always been Nintendo's least successful major market though, so that isn't surprising. More Trending The Switch 2's success is particularly impressive considering its launch line-up, outside of Mario Kart World, is devoid of essential exclusives from Nintendo. There is strong third party support but only for existing titles, some of which are fairly old. The only two exclusive third party titles are Konami's Survival Kids and the budget-priced Fast Fusion. Nintendo's first party output is set to expand in the coming months, with Donkey Kong Bananza, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Kirby Air Riders, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A all expected to arrive before Christmas. Nintendo also recently announced a Splatoon spin-off called Splatoon Raiders, although it's unclear when it will be released. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter. Nintendo Switch 2 outsells Switch 1 launch by over 100% but fails to beat PS5
Only a couple of UK retailers held midnight launches (Credits: David Parry/PA Media Assignments) The Nintendo Switch 2 has already sold over 160,000 consoles in the UK and become Nintendo's fastest selling console ever. Although there's still no official sales figures for the Nintendo Switch 2 everything points towards it being a massive worldwide success, selling more units in its first day than any other console. That'd certainly be an impressive feat, but Nintendo itself has yet to substantiate these claims. Earlier today, though, additional sales data has been shared, and it at least gives an indication of how the Switch 2 has performed here in the UK. Although no exact figures have been given, it's said that the Switch 2 has had the best UK launch of any Nintendo console ever. Although given the company's history in this country, it's difficult to know exactly what that means. The data comes courtesy of market research firm NielsenIQ, which shared its findings with The Game Business, adding that the Switch 2 outperformed the Switch 1 by more than two to one. On top of that, it outperformed the Nintendo 3DS, which was the original record holder for the biggest Nintendo hardware launch in the UK. For the record, the Switch 1 managed 80,000 units in the UK at launch while the 3DS sold 113,000 units. So the implication is that the Switch 2 sold over 160,000 consoles. The only Switch 2 figures we have so far are from Currys, which says it sold 30,000 pre-orders at its stores, which they seemed to be very happy with. PlayStation consoles have always been more popular in the UK (Sony) NielseinIQ adds that this only makes the Switch 2 the fourth best-selling console launch in the UK, trailing behind the Xbox Series X/S, the PlayStation 4, and especially the PlayStation 5. Coming out in the middle of lockdown, the PlayStation 5 was a huge deal in the UK, when it launched in 2020, and went on to become the country's best selling console in 2021. As The Game Business points out, the original Switch and the Wii had weaker launches in the UK than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox One. The UK has always been Nintendo's weakest international market, which can be traced all the way back to the original NES from the 1980s. Not only did the UK not receive the console until 1987 – four years after its initial Japanese launch and two years after the US – but it and its games were badly overpriced and little effort was made in converting it for PAL televisions. Nintendo didn't even have a proper UK headquarters at that time and it wasn't until the GameCube that they started taking the region seriously, with the Wii and DS being the first time that Nintendo's success in the UK mirrored that of the rest of the world. The good news for Nintendo is that things have been steadily improving since then and doubling the Switch 1's debut is quite a feat. In the run up to the Switch 2's release, some analysts predicted it would be the biggest console launch ever, although Nintendo is only aiming to sell slightly more than the original Switch managed in its launch period. This more conservative outlook can likely be chalked up to Nintendo opting to play things safe due to all the uncertainty caused by US president Donald Trump's tariffs. Plus, it looks better for them if they easily beat their goals.
