Asian currencies poised for weekly gains; rate cut lifts Indian equities
SINGAPORE/HONG KONG: Asian currencies were steady on Friday and poised for weekly gains after a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping signalled further trade talks, while most regional equities tracked Wall Street's overnight losses. In India, equities reversed course to rise 0.9 per cent after the Reserve Bank of India delivered a larger-than-expected cut to its key repo rate and lowered the cash reserve ratio to bolster economic growth. "The RBI may have decided to move quickly to a more appropriate policy rate level. A shift towards neutral stance means more rate cuts may be unlikely in the near-term," Jeff Ng, Head of Asia Macro Strategy at SMBC, said. The rupee inched up 0.1 per cent to 85.74 per dollar. Other regional currencies moved within a narrow band. The Thai baht and Singapore dollar were largely flat but were on track for weekly gains of 0.5 per cent and 0.4 per cent, respectively. The Malaysian ringgit was up nearly 0.6 per cent for the week. MSCI's index of emerging market currencies was flat after touching an all-time high on Thursday. The index is up 0.5 per cent for the week. The dollar index was little changed, after hitting a six-week low on Thursday, and was headed for a weekly loss of 0.5 per cent. Trump's erratic tariff moves and a worsening US fiscal outlook have triggered a flight from the dollar, prompting analysts to expect most emerging market currencies will retain or build on their gains over the next six months. In their closely watched hour-long phone call on Thursday, Xi pressed Trump to ease trade tensions that have rattled the global economy and warned against provocative moves on Taiwan, according to a summary released by the Chinese government. But Trump said on social media that the talks, focused primarily on trade, led to "a very positive conclusion". "The talks look positive, and coupled with Federal Reserve rate cut expectations due to weak US data, might lead to further USD softening," said Saktiandi Supaat, Head of FX research at Maybank. Markets are now bracing for the US jobs and non-farm payrolls report due later in the day, with concerns that a downside surprise could stoke stagflation fears and boost pressure on the Federal Reserve to quickly ease policy. Other regional stocks were broadly lower, tracking Wall Street's losses from overnight. MSCI's gauge of Asian emerging market equities edged down 0.1 per cent. Equities in Malaysia and Thailand fell 0.1 per cent and 0.8 per cent, respectively.

Thailand to begin trade talks with US — high-level negotiations underway
BANGKOK: Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has confirmed that the United States is now ready to enter formal trade talks with Thailand, following Washington's earlier imposition of 36% reciprocal tariffs on Thai exports. Speaking at Government House on Friday, Maris announced that the Thai Embassy in Washington, D.C. had informed him that the US government is prepared to move forward with trade negotiations. The talks aim to resolve the recent tariff hike and restore balance in bilateral trade relations. He added that Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has ordered an expedited process to set a meeting date. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira will lead the Thai delegation in discussions with three key US agencies: Scott Bessent, US Secretary of the Treasury Howard Lutnick, US Secretary of Commerce Jamieson Greer, US Trade Representative (USTR) 'We were notified yesterday by our embassy in Washington. The Prime Minister has since directed us to coordinate swiftly and schedule talks as soon as possible,' Maris said. Although a final date for the negotiations has not yet been confirmed due to the need to align the schedules of all three U.S. agencies, initial signals from the USTR indicate a readiness to engage. The USTR has expressed interest in Thailand's proposed trade package, viewing it as a constructive step forward. Maris added that once talks with these three agencies are complete, no further negotiations with additional US bodies will be necessary, as they represent the full authority of the US government in trade matters. "Whichever agency is available first, we will begin talks immediately to ensure speed and efficiency," he said. - The Nation/ANN

SIBUR unveils updated sustainability strategy through 2030
MOSCOW, RUSSIA - Media OutReach Newswire - 6 June 2025 - SIBUR, Russia's largest producer of polymers and rubbers, has successfully concluded its five-year sustainability strategy and presented new targets for the next five-year period, 2025–2029. By 2030, the company aims to recycle at least 600,000 tonnes of plastic waste through its own and partner initiatives, including through the expansion of contract manufacturing for processing various types of plastics. In 2024, SIBUR recycled 111,000 tonnes of polymer waste, surpassing its target of 100,000 tonnes per year. Over the next five years, SIBUR plans to increase its annual output of sustainable products – those made with lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or that incorporate recycled or bio-based feedstock – to 400,000 tonnes. For comparison, the company produced 287,000 tonnes of such products in 2024. 'Polymers are becoming an essential element in the global energy transition and green economy; their role in reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency is only growing,' said Nadezhda Galaktionova, Head of Sustainability and Climate Solutions at SIBUR. 'That's why we were the first company in Russia to make increasing revenue from sustainable product sales a specific financial target in our ESG strategy.' Another ambitious goal set by SIBUR for 2025–2029 is the development, implementation and scaling of chemical recycling technologies for mixed plastics (thermolysis). This innovative approach aims to significantly improve plastic waste management in Russia. In the next five years, SIBUR intends to achieve carbon neutrality at two more facilities through improved energy efficiency, purchases of green electricity, and the allocation of carbon units. Under the previous strategy, the company's SIBUR-PETF plant in the Tver region became Russia's first carbon-neutral production site. By 2030, SIBUR also plans to reduce its GHG emissions per tonne of product by 10% compared with 2024 levels and to support at least two nature-based climate projects. Under the previous strategy, the company verified over 3 million carbon units from climate projects at its facilities and planted more than 5 million trees. The new strategy also targets a 10% reduction in water consumption for operational needs. By 2030, SIBUR aims to increase the percentage of women in engineering and production roles at the company to at least 30% and to provide additional support for working mothers.
