Malaysia shines at Japan Open 2025 with key badminton victories
National top pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani fought hard for a 21-13, 17-21, 22-20 win over Indonesia's Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Shohibul Fikri in a thrilling quarter-final clash.
This marks their first victory against the Indonesian duo, setting up a semi-final showdown with Taiwan's Liu Kuang Heng-Yang Po Han.
The Malaysians previously defeated the Taiwanese pair in last year's edition.
Another Malaysian men's pair, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, caused an upset by ousting China's fifth seeds Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang 25-23, 21-19.
They will next face South Korea's Kim Won Ho-Seo Seong Jae, who earlier eliminated compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun.
In women's doubles, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah continued their dominance over South Korea's Jeong Na Eun-Lee Yeon Woo with a 21-15, 21-19 win.
However, they now face a tough semi-final against Japan's Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida, who have won 13 of their 14 past meetings.
Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei also progressed, defeating Japan's Yuichi Shimogami-Sayaka Hobara 21-14, 21-12.
They will meet China's Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin next, seeking redemption after last year's quarter-final loss.

Elvis advances as Jinq En turns back the clock at Singapore worlds
KUALA LUMPUR: It was a positive day overall for the national contingent at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore today (Aug 2). In swimming, Phee Jinq En's decision to skip the women's 100 metre breaststroke on Monday (Aug 28) paid dividends at the OCBC Aquatics Centre as she clocked her fastest time in the 50m breaststroke in over five years. Jinq En, 27, who has battled injuries and illness in recent seasons, clocked 31.78 seconds to place 30th from 53 starters in the preliminaries. Her time was just over three-tenths of a second off her national record (31.40s) which she set en route to winning the gold at the 2019 Manila Sea Games. Jinq En had picked up a hip injury during training last week and opted to sit out the 100m breaststroke on Monday to focus on the 50m event, which is her favoured event. Only the top-16 advanced to the 50m breaststroke semi-finals. In diving, Elvis Clement kept hopes of seeing a Malaysian diver make the final of an individual event in Singapore alive after booking his spot in the semi-finals of the men's 10m platform individual event. Elvis' dives scored 64.50, 72.00, 82.50, 86.70, 62.40 and 64.80 for a 432.90 total to place 10th overall and comfortably make the top-18 cut for the semi-finals tomorrow (Aug 3). Only the top-12 divers from the semi-finals will qualify for the final, which will also be held tomorrow. So far, Malaysia has yet to qualify for the final of an individual event at this edition of the world meet. Elvis' synchronised event partner Enrique Harold, however, settled for 37th from 48 divers on 323.45 (36.00, 67.20, 52.80, 37.95, 52.70, 76.80) and thus did not advance. Elvis and Enrique had created history after placing seventh in the men's 10m platform synchronised final on Tuesday (Aug 29), it was the highest-ever finish by a Malaysian pair in the event at the world meet. Bryan Nickson Lomas-James Sandayud (Montreal 2005) and Ooi Tze Liang-Chew Yiwei (Kazan 2015) had both achieved 10th place, which were previously the best finishes by a Malaysian pair.

The men's singles shuttler is just one win away from joining an elite group of Macau Open champions after storming into his first-ever World Tour final at the Super 300 event today. The world No. 45 showed grit and maturity to battle past India's world No. 47 Tharun Mannepalli 19-21, 21-16, 21-16 in a tough 81-minute semi-final at the East Asian Games Dome. His reward? Jimmy-Pei Jing stun Indonesians to reach first Super 300 final
KUALA LUMPUR: Independent mixed doubles pair Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing pulled off a massive upset to storm into the Macau Open final on Saturday. World No. 127 Jimmy-Pei Jing, who only teamed up in March, stunned Indonesia's world No. 19 Amri Syahnawi-Nita Marwah 21-18, 21-16 in just 43 minutes at the East Asian Games Dome. It marks their first-ever final at a Super 300 event. The Malaysians have reached the finals of three lower-tier tournaments this year — the Vietnam International Series (March), Phuket International Series (April), and St Denis Reunion Open (May) — but finished runners-up on all occasions.
