Fatal crash shuts down southbound lanes of Florida's Turnpike in Davie, officials say
The incident happened just before 3 p.m. near mile marker 53, located north of Exit 54 for I-595, State Road 84, and U.S. 441. Authorities have not yet released the identity, age or gender of the person killed in the crash.
All southbound lanes were closed as emergency crews responded, with traffic stretching back past mile marker 57. The entrance ramp to the Turnpike was also shut down.
Officials urged drivers to steer clear of the area and use alternate routes while the scene was cleared.
As of Saturday evening, no further details about the cause of the crash or any additional injuries had been made public.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) in Florida said in a Friday, Aug. 1, news release that skeletal remains found in May near the retention wall of a home on the St. Johns River in Fleming Island belonged to Nicholas Lamont Anderson, 24. The positive identification was made in cooperation with the District 4 Medical Examiner's Office and with help from the community, authorities said. 'While this is a considerable step forward in this investigation, CCSO detectives are still seeking information about Mr. Anderson and circumstances leading up to the discovery of his body; specifically, the persons he encountered, his activities, and places he visited from April 1 to April 7, 2025,' the sheriff's office said. The Clay County Sheriff's Office has not released Anderson's cause of death or shared whether or not foul play is suspected. PEOPLE contacted the sheriff's office for comment on Tuesday, Aug. 5. In an interview with NBC affiliate WXIA, Anderson's aunt, Monica Tucker, said her nephew traveled to Jacksonville, Fla., to meet a man he had been corresponding with on a dating app. He had not returned home from that trip since April. Tucker said when Anderson did not show up, his family went to Jacksonville to meet the man from the app. She added that there were inconsistencies in the man's story, although authorities later cleared him. 'First, he said he didn't see him,' Tucker told WXIA. 'Then he said he went to the hotel to watch movies. And then he says he took them to go get cigarettes, and then he kept saying something about a pier.' Trommell Henry, Anderson's stepfather, told CBS affiliate WANP that it was out of character for his stepson to not check in with his family during his stay in Florida. "We needed him back home. We wanted him back home. Having family is truly the key,' Henry said. Mary Anderson, the victim's mother, said in the same interview that her son has experienced mental health issues. 'I don't see him just randomly picking this particular place to go to, to travel to. So I feel as though it was someone that he chose to meet there,' she added. Mary remembered her son as someone who was full of life and loved to crochet. She alleged that her son's case was not taken seriously at first, saying, 'I thought no one cared about my missing Black boy.' The alleged victim, whose name has not been publicly announced, survived the attack and reported the incident to police herself. Shakia Jenkins, 29, was arrested last week for the Miami, Fla., incident on July 15, Miami City police confirms to PEOPLE. A criminal complaint obtained by Law&Crime and reviewed by PEOPLE states the alleged victim reportedly told authorities she met Jenkins on social media in 2023 and maintained a close friendship until a fallout in 2024 following an argument at a Valentine's Day party. On July 15, the two women encountered each other at a dance club in Miami Gardens, a few miles north of Miami, and got into a verbal altercation. After the two were kicked out of the club, they challenged each other to meet for a face-off in Miami. Once there, the alleged victim told police, they got into a physical altercation when she felt a "sharp object stabbing" her on her face, per the complaint. The alleged victim then drove to Miami Dade Sheriff's Office, before the investigation was directed to Miami City police, the department tells PEOPLE. The woman then showed authorities a video of Jenkins on Instagram Live, where she is seen allegedly bragging about stabbing her, doubling down with a verbal attack. "I stabbed that ho, call me Chucky and call me Michael Myers," she allegedly says in the video. It wasn't immediately clear how long the Instagram Live video was, but it was allegedly peppered with repeated threats against the alleged victim. The video is no longer available on her account. In a TikTok video reviewed by investigators, Jenkins allegedly also says she tried to stab the woman in her brain, while in another video she expressed her intention to shoot the victim. In one screen recording, she allegedly says, "I'm mad, I don't even have an appetite. I thought that ho was going to be the appetizer."Jenkins was arrested on Friday, Aug. 1, and charged with first degree attempted murder; possession of a weapon by a convicted felon; and written or electronic threats to kill or conduct bodily injury, per online court records reviewed by PEOPLE. Police investigating fatal ATV crash in Nain
Police are investigating the death of an 18-year-old woman after an ATV crash in northern Labrador. The crash happened around 9 a.m. AT Saturday morning, in Nain — the northernmost community in Nunatsiavut. In a news release sent Tuesday afternoon, the RCMP said officers responded to the crash at a local playground. They found the woman, who had been driving the vehicle, trapped underneath it. Emergency crews were able to free her, but she was taken to the Nain Community Clinic where she was pronounced dead. Both police and the Chief Medical Examiner's office are investigating the death.
