Amit Shah reviews preparation for forthcoming Census set to include caste enumeration in New Delhi
New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed preparations for the upcoming Census of India, which is now officially set to include caste enumeration, as per the official statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The minister hailed this move as a 'historic decision' that corrected a 'historical wrong.'
The notification to conduct the Census was published in the official Gazette on Monday, following a high-level meeting held in Delhi, where the Home Minister reviewed the plan along with the Union Home Secretary, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (RG&CCI), and other senior officials.
According to the release, the Census 2027 will be the 16th Census since inception and the 8th since Independence. It will be conducted in two phases -- the House Listing Operation (HLO) followed by the Population Enumeration (PE).
In the first phase, details of housing conditions, assets, and amenities of each household will be collected.
The second phase will gather information on the demographic, socio-economic, and cultural aspects of individuals.
The caste data will also be collected in this phase, according to an official's statements.
Clarifying media reports that questioned the mention of caste in the Gazette, the Home Ministry reiterated that the inclusion of caste enumeration was clearly stated in the press releases dated April 30, June 4, and June 15, 2025.
In a post on X, Union Home Minister Amit Shah welcomed the move, calling it a bold and just decision by the Modi government.
He posted, 'The CCPA meeting held under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi today corrected a historical wrong by deciding in favour of the integration of caste enumeration with the population census, and sent the message of its firm commitment to social equity and rights for every section of the society.'
Shah also targeted the opposition, stating, 'The Congress and its allied parties opposed caste enumeration when they wielded power for decades but made it their electoral plank when in opposition. This decision will empower all economically and socially disadvantaged sections, promote inclusion, and pave new paths for the progress of the underprivileged.'
The Population Census 2027 will begin with a reference date of March 1, 2027, for most parts of the country. The reference date for snow-bound and non-synchronous areas such as Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will be October 1, 2026.
According to the official statement, around 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and 1.3 lakh Census functionaries will be deployed for the exercise. This will be the first fully digital Census, using mobile apps and offering a self-enumeration option to citizens.
Officials assured that stringent data security measures will be implemented during data collection, transmission, and storage.
The last Census was conducted in 2011. A new round scheduled for 2021 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, despite all initial preparations being completed. (ANI)

Until recently, most visitors to the Vidhana Soudha, the seat of the Karnataka legislature in Bengaluru, merely saw an edifice staring down imperiously at them with the weight of the years it has witnessed since Independence. Since June 1, however, the building and its premises have been opened to visitors by way of weekend guided tours overseen by the State Tourism Development Corporation. Guests on the tour can expect to see and learn about various aspects of the Vidhana Soudha, some of which are not common knowledge or easily visible from the outside. The tour starts near a statue of Mahatma Gandhi located between the Vidhana Soudha and the Vikasa Soudha nearby. Moving on from here, one gets to see the foundation stone of the building, laid down by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1951. While proceeding, guides shed light on the second chief minister of Mysore State, Kengal Hanumanthaiah, and his deep connection to the history of the building which was also influenced by prominent figures such as Sir M Visvesvaraya and German botanist G H Krumbiegel. Another interesting aspect throughout many parts of the building are cement reliefs – prominent on many ceiling sections – that depict natural motifs such as lotuses and pineapples, indicating purity and hospitality, to name a few. The structure of the Vidhana Soudha is largely composed of granite from quarries at Magadi, as senior journalist Ravindra Reshme stated in a 2023 lecture. Interestingly, he also pointed out that the foundation stone-laying by Nehru seems to have been the only formal inauguration of the building. Just within the foyer, not far from the banquet hall (visible through locked doors), is a detailed model of the Vidhana Soudha, carved in sandalwood. Originally intended to be sent to Parliament, it never made the trip. Other sights within the building itself are remarkable from an architectural perspective – such as the unsupported central dome of the building, which itself contains six smaller floors. Visitors can also briefly take a look at the Assembly Hall from a viewing gallery above, with the seats of various MLAs and the Speaker clearly visible. This is one of the highlights of the tour. For security reasons, visitors will have to leave cameras and mobile phones with a guard outside until they finish viewing this section. While walking past the 'corridors of power' in the building and the offices of various major politicians, one can also catch some remarkable sights, such as a view into the Vikasa Soudha which reveals one of the largest murals in Karnataka, or a peepal tree that overlooks a small temple that was there before the Vidhana Soudha was built. Moving around the exterior of the building, visitors can also get a clear look at various architectural influences in different parts of the structure, which the tour guides elaborate upon, alongside facts regarding several political figures of the state that one can see represented in statues around the gardens. "We plan to leverage advanced digital tools," says Odisha Census Director after MHA issues notification on census
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], June 17 (ANI): Odisha Census Director Nikhil Pawan Kalyan said preparations have begun for the enumeration exercise, including officer training and enumerator appointments, aiming for 100 per cent accuracy using digital tools. The Centre officially notified the launch of the 16th Census of India, including caste enumeration, with March 1, 2027, as the reference date. The Odisha Census Director further appealed to the citizens to cooperate and stay informed about the whole process. Speaking to ANI on Monday, Kalyan said, 'The Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India has issued a notification today announcing the launch of the upcoming population census across all the states and Union Territories, including Odisha... The reference date for the census is 12 AM, 1st March, 2027, meaning all enumeration and data-related activities must be completed based on this reference point. We will initiate our activities from now on... This includes training of officers, appointment of enumerators... We want to ensure a 100 per cent accurate census as data is the basis of all policies in the country... I appeal to all the citizens to cooperate and stay informed. We will share timely updates as operations progress... We plan to leverage advanced digital tools - including mobile applications for data collection, storage and other analytics...' On Monday, the central government notified the population census, the process of which will begin in March 2027. As per a gazette notification released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 'In exercise of the powers conferred by Section three of the Census Act 1948 and in suppression of the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs dated March 26, 2018, the Central Government declared that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027, as per a circular released by the Ministry of Home Affairs. 'The reference date for the census shall be March 1, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. "They are spewing venom against India": Damdami Taksal condemns pro-Khalistani protests in Canada ahead of G7 Summit
Amritsar (Punjab) [India], June 17 (ANI): Damdami Taksal Spokesperson, Professor Sarchand Singh Khyala has strongly condemned the anti-India protests by Khalistani groups, ahead of the G7 summit in Canada, stating that the pro-Khalistani people are 'spewing venom against India'. Khyala praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for helping the Sikh community, emphasising that the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) gave him the Qaumi Seva Award for his contributions. Speaking to ANI on Monday, Sarchand Singh Khyala said, 'In the video, I can see that innocent children aged between 5-7 years old disrespecting the pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The pro-Khalistani people are spewing venom against India. They are spreading hatred by brainwashing children, and I strongly condemn this.' 'Sikhs are known for their brotherly harmony and for helping people. PM Modi has done a lot for our Sikh community. Whatever has not been done in the last 70 years, PM Modi has done it. This is the reason PM Modi has been awarded the Qaumi Seva Award by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) for his contributions to the Sikh community,' he added. The Prime Minister declared Veer Bal Diwas on December 26th to commemorate the sacrifice of two sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru. He opened the Kartarpur Sahib corridor for Sikhs. He has a lot of love for Punjab. There are some extremist forces in Canada who are not able to do anything in India, and they want to show their children, (in protest), thinking that this will increase their visibility,' he said. 'This is something which is fatal for Punjab as well as fatal for that country, and to teach this thing to children is neither our soul nor our duty because we have sacrificed and that too for the sake of our country,' Singh said.
