Etta Eyong: uncertainty surrounds the Cameroonian at Villarreal?
Despite a promising start to the season, the future of Etta Eyong at Villarreal remains uncertain.
The Cameroonian striker, who netted a decisive goal against Oviedo on the opening day of LaLiga EA Sports, has drawn attention with his attacking output. He already showcased his potential last season and finished pre-season as the team's top scorer, finding the net three times.
Yet his place in the squad is far from guaranteed. Still part of the reserve team, Etta Eyong could see his playing time limited if the club brings in an attacking reinforcement before the transfer window closes. According to Brand daily, Villarreal is still looking to bolster its attack, which could lead to the player being loaned out to gain experience and more minutes on the pitch.
The Cameroonian has already proven he can be decisive, but competition for places is fierce and his immediate future will depend on the club's moves in the transfer market. Etta Eyong could stay and fight for a spot in the starting eleven, or leave on loan to continue his development elsewhere.

Atletico Madrid stunned by Espanyol in La Liga opener

Atletico Madrid were off to the worst possible start in La Liga 2025/26 after suffering a 2-1 defeat against Espanyol. All eyes were on Los Rojiblancos on the back of an impressive spending spree, but those expectations were put paid to in their league opener last night. Atletico broke the deadlock in the 37th minute following an outstanding free kick from Julian Alvarez, who had picked up from where he left last season. The visitors dominated the game for long spells and could have doubled the lead following a swift interplay before Alvarez's final shot hit the woodwork. While Atletico hoped that three points were a mere formality, the hosts turned the game on its head in the final quarter. Miguel Rubio sneaked behind Atletico's defence to score a header off a free kick to equalise. And in no time, Pere Milla netted another exquisite header off Omar El Hilali's cross to complete a stunning comeback victory. Espanyol deserved to claim the victory after soaking in the pressure for much of the game with their tight defending and punishing the Colchoneros for their defensive lapses. On the other hand, Atletico have hit a stumbling block in their quest to challenge for the league title with a revamped squad, having failed to win a major silverware since 2021. Manager Diego Simeone accepted the blame for the defeat and stated it was an early wake-up call to bounce back stronger this season. New signings Johnny Cardoso, Matteo Ruggeri and Thiago Almada looked solid in their league debut and will be hoping to make a significant impact in future. Except for Alvarez, Atletico's attack was rather underwhelming, and Simeone will be looking to fix it ahead of their next game against Elche.

Friendlies: Real Madrid win big, Bayern youngsters impress, Inter draw

Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Inter were all in action across Tuesday's club friendlies. Here's how the action unfolded in all three games ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. Inter denied win at the death by MonzaScorers: Ciurria 32'; Birindelli (OG) 45+1', Espositio 52' Inter came from behind to defeat Monza 2-1 in their penultimate pre-season friendly. Cristian Chivu left many of his big guns on the bench to start with, and saw his side go behind on the half hour mark. Wing-back Patrick Ciurria was the scorer, tapping home at the back post after a fine cross into the box. from Gianluca Caprari. The man on the other flank, Samuele Birindelli, was the unfortunate scorer of Inter's equaliser in added time before the break, powering a header into his own bet from Federico Dimarco's cross. Francesco Esposito turned the game on its head early into the second half, instinctively flicking home Matteo Darmian's shot, as the youngster once again showed why he could be one to look out for this season. However, there was a sting in the tail late, late on as Paulo Azzi struck to grab Monza a draw. Inter conclude their pre-season with a home clash with Olympiacos on Saturday. New No.10 Mbappé leads the way in four-star Madrid showScorers: Militão 10', Mbappé 13', 59', Rodrygo 81' Real Madrid made extremely light work of surprise early Austrian Bundesliga leader WSG Tirol with a 4-0 win. The game was near-over as a contest after just 13 minutes with a quickfire double from Éder Militão and Kylian Mbappé. The Brazilian looped a header in before the French forward took a ball beautifully on the turn from Arda Güler and smashed home for his first goal wearing the No.10 shirt. His second came after the break, and after a pitch invader got a selfie with him, and it was another sublime finish, as he rolled the ball over his foot to sidestep the Tirol keeper and tap home. Rodrygo came off the bench to add a late fourth, and perhaps remind Xabi Alonso of his worth amid reports of a move away. The new Los Blancos boss will now set his sights on his side's La Liga opener against Osasuna at the Bernabéu in a week's time. Bayern youngsters steal the showScorers: Karl 20', Kusi-Asare 26'; Giandomenico 51' Bayern Munich edged Grasshoppers Zurich to a 2-1 victory to cap pre-season. 17-year-old starlet Lennart Karl produced a moment of quality on the 20-minute mark to give his side the lead, firing an unstoppable, dipping effort into the net from 25 yards out. Another Bayern academy graduate, Jonah Kusi-Asare, added a second just five minutes later, latching onto Karl's through ball and lashing into the top corner. The Bundesliga side couldn't extend their lead before the break and Grasshoppers pulled a goal back shortly after half time through Loris Giandomenico's fierce first-time volley from a tight angle. Vincent Kompany made seven changes on the hour mark and two substitutes almost combined for a third when Dayot Upamecano's hooked volley from Joshua Kimmich's cross hit the crossbar. Although Bayern couldn't find a third, they remained on top and saw out a comfortable win to end pre-season with two victories ahead of their season opener in the Supercup against Stuttgart. 📸 Marco Luzzani - 2025 Getty Images

USA's Johnny Cardoso Makes Atletico Madrid Debut in Tough Loss to Espanyol

LaLiga USA's Johnny Cardoso Makes Atletico Madrid Debut in Tough Loss to Espanyol Published Aug. 17, 2025 11:34 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link U.S. men's national team midfielder Johnny Cardoso made his debut for Atlético Madrid, but the team conceded two late goals to lose its LaLiga season opener to Espanyol. Despite debuting most of its new signings, Atleti lost its Spanish league opening match for the first-ever time under coach Diego Simeone. Host Espanyol's 2-1 win on Sunday was Atletico's first opening defeat since Simeone took over in late 2011. It hadn't previously lost an opening league game since 2009. Along with Cardoso, Simeone started the match with five of the club's new signings for the season — Alex Baena, Thiago Almada, David Hancko and Matteo Ruggeri. Giacomo Raspadori also made his debut coming off the bench in the second half. Cardoso, 23, has 20 international appearances for the U.S. men's team. He is expected to be in the mix for USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino's squad for the 2026 World Cup. Pochettino, a former player for Espanyol, was in attendance at Sunday's match. Atletico took the lead with Julian Alvarez's free kick in the 37th minute but conceded goals by Miguel Rubio in the 73rd and Pere Milla in the 84th. "It happens," Simeone said. "The result hurts, but it's going to make us improve and grow. I'm left with all the good things the team did." Last season, Atletico only twice lost a league match that it was leading. "We played a very good first half and we had the match under control in the second," Atletico midfielder Koke said. "But after their first goal they turned things around." Barcelona began the defense of its Spanish league title with a comfortable 3-0 win at nine-man Mallorca on Saturday. Real Madrid hosts Osasuna on Tuesday. Reporting by The Associated Press.
