Jelajah Komuniti Digital boosts rural tech skills in Belaga

BELAGA: The Ministry of Digital is stepping up efforts to close the digital gap in rural Sarawak through its 'Jelajah Komuniti Digital' initiative at SMK Belaga.
The programme, designed to strengthen digital literacy, is a joint effort between the ministry, the Department of Personal Data Protection (JPDP), MYNIC Bhd, and Alibaba Cloud.
Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong reiterated the ministry's dedication to inclusive digital growth, ensuring no community is excluded from technological advancements.
'We urge all Malaysians to embrace a digital-first approach as the backbone of a thriving digital economy,' he said during the launch.
The sessions covered digital education, personal data security, digital identity management, and introductory AI training.
Over 300 students, 40 community leaders, and government agency representatives participated, gaining hands-on experience in cloud computing and AI through Alibaba Cloud's interactive modules.
Wilson also engaged with attendees in an open dialogue, reinforcing the government's push for nationwide digital inclusivity.

PETALING JAYA: The government is targeting 98% 5G coverage across residential, industrial, and rural areas by 2030 to support the nationwide adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan. 'This isn't just about infrastructure. it's about building the digital backbone that enables Malaysians in all corners of the country to participate in the AI-driven economy,' he said. AI literacy programmes will also be introduced at the primary education level to instill early understanding and familiarity with the technology. Meanwhile, efforts will be made to expand local intellectual property, boost strategic funding, and foster cross-sector collaboration between academia, industries, and young innovators. 'These are are concrete steps to empower people, protect national interests, and ensure that Malaysia's digital future is one that leaves no one behind,' he said. Aligned with this goal, the government also aims to develop at least 5,000 digital entrepreneurs by the end of the decade, creating a broader base for innovation and job creation. To reinforce trust in the growing digital landscape, Anwar said a National Digital Trust and Cybersecurity Strategy will be introduced. 'We must protect personal data, counter cyber threats, and uphold our digital sovereignty,' he told Parliament. Complementing these efforts, the government will establish a National Data Bank as a unified data repository, alongside the creation of a Data Commission to oversee digital governance and ensure responsible data usage.

PETALING JAYA: The government will expand various aid initiatives, including cash assistance, affordable food programmes and utility subsidies, to help Malaysians cope with the rising cost of living. Presenting the 13th Malaysia Plan (MP13) in the Dewan Rakyat today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said under the Payung Rahmah initiative, programmes such as Jualan Rahmah, Menu Rahmah, Kafe Rahmah and Bakul Rahmah will be intensified to ensure access to affordable meals. 'Seventeen types of assistance will also be introduced for students from preschool to secondary school to ensure access to nutritious meals, including boarding school meal aid, supplementary food programmes, early school aid, and scholarships,' he said. Anwar said the rates for Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) have been increased, with SARA recipients expanded from 700,000 hardcore poor households to 5.4 million, now also including the B40 group. 'Last week, I also announced a one-off SARA payment of RM100 for all Malaysians aged 18 and above.' Anwar added that efforts will also include reducing household electricity bills through the Time-of-Use (ToU) scheme by Tenaga Nasional Berhad, continuing Rahmah Packages for internet services and affordable insurance, and maintaining subsidised public transport passes and air tickets for students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.
