World's Largest Ptcher Plant On Display At Borneo Flora Festival In Labuan
Sabah Parks (TTS) Botanist Sukaibin Sumail said the largest pitcher plant known as 'Nepenthes rajah' is placed in an air-conditioned tent at the Permata Hutan Borneo.
"This pitcher plant, locally known as Kukuanga, can hold about 3.5 litres of water," he told Bernama when met at the BFF site here. The event, which runs for five days, is set to conclude tomorrow (July 30).
The BFF, which involves 31 exhibitors from Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan, is being held for the first time at the Labuan International Marine Sports Complex.
He said other pitcher plants exhibited at BFF are Nepenthes villosa, Nepenthes edwardsiana, Nepenthes stenophylla, Nepenthes burbidgeae, Nepenthes lowii and Nepenthes reinwardtiana
Sukaibin said visitors showed great interest in learning about the pitcher plant,s and he was delighted to share information about the rare species, which is seldom seen in public.
In the same tent, a Bernama survey found that the Borneo Tropical Flowers section featured a tree decorated with fresh blooms and illuminated by light-emitting diode (LED) lights, creating a magical ambience within the enclosed space.
At the base of the tree, various fresh flowers, including orchids, sunflowers and lilies, are beautifully arranged and accentuated with LED lighting.
To preserve the condition of the fresh flowers, only 25 visitors were allowed in at a time.

The programme, held in collaboration with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), was organised in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day 2025 (HKHM 2025), with a focus on showcasing patriotism through casual performances. PENTARAMA MERDEKA@KLIA also featured cultural dance performances and an interactive session with visitors, including a patriotism-themed quiz. JAPEN director-general Julina Johan said hosting the programme at the country's main gateway allowed both locals and foreign visitors to experience Malaysian culture and witness the spirit of patriotism among its people. 'The approach this time is quite different. We are not only presenting patriotic songs but also highlighting Malaysia's cultural elements. 'We have (traditional) songs from Pahang, Perak and Perlis…we are giving them a new lease of life as we want to introduce them to visitors at KLIA Terminal 1,' she told Bernama here today. Also present were KLIA Terminal 1 operations general manager Abdul Hasman Abdul Muhimim and JAPEN Communications and Community Development Service Division director Muhammad Najmi Mustapha. NIOSH Calls For Enhanced Water Transport Safety Ahead Of VM 2026
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has called for enhanced safety measures in water transport and related activities, particularly in the tourism sector, in line with Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM 2026). In a statement today, NIOSH said tourism boat operators and handlers must comply with laws and safety standards. This includes technical requirements under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 and tourism safety guidelines issued by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. 'Various incidents involving water transport, including the capsizing tragedy in Pulau Perhentian that claimed lives and injured several victims on June 28, should serve as a reminder to all parties of the importance of adhering to safety procedures for the wellbeing of passengers, workers and tourism operators,' the statement said. To this end, the agency expressed its readiness to assist relevant parties in complying with related laws and regulations through safety training, compliance audits and the strengthening of risk management systems. NIOSH noted that the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act 2022, enforced since June 1 last year, requires employers with five or more workers to appoint an occupational safety and health (OSH) coordinator. These coordinators are responsible for assisting employers in complying with OSH legislation and implementing OSH programmes in the workplace. 'In this regard, NIOSH also offers the OSH Coordinator course and various other programmes to help operators meet legal requirements, such as basic OSH and first aid training, which also includes water rescue skills. 'In addition, NIOSH offers an internationally recognised management system known as the 'Adventure Tourism Safety Management Systems' or MS ISO 21101:2022.
