Under Operation Kayakalp, 1.3L govt schools revamped, 96% now meet standards: UP minister
Uttar Pradesh basic education minister (independent Charge) Sandeep Singh, on Monday said the state's school education infrastructure has undergone a large-scale transformation under Operation Kayakalp, with 1,32,852 council schools redesigned so far at a cost of ₹11,000 crore. In 2017, only 36% of schools met the required standards. This figure has now crossed 96%, he said.
As part of improving access to girls' education, 746 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) have been upgraded to intermediate level. Among these, 683 schools now have smart classrooms, ICT labs, additional rooms, and hostels, Singh said. 'A new initiative called the 'Curiosity Program' in collaboration with IIT Gandhinagar has also been introduced to promote innovative learning.'
The minister said that NCERT-based curriculum has been implemented through SCERT, and timely textbook delivery has been ensured. Under the 'Learning by Doing' initiative, students in 2,274 schools are being taught practical skills through four trades using 205 types of tools.
Under the 'Nipun Bharat Mission', the government has launched two apps, 'Nipun Lakshya' for Classes 1–2 and 'Nipun Plus' for Classes 3–12. Over 1 crore children have received ₹1,200 each through direct benefit transfer (DBT).
Singh said a budget of ₹447.80 crore has been allocated under the Chief Minister Model Composite School Scheme, and the foundation stone for 66 Chief Minister Abhyudaya Vidyalayas has been laid.
The minister said Uttar Pradesh has emerged among the leading states in school education and termed the changes a major step towards building an empowered and educated society.

Hyderabad cardiologist gets US patent for multi-functional cardiac occluder
File photo: Dr Nageswara Rao Koneti HYDERABAD: An innovative device that can fix various types of cardiac defects, designed by Hyderabad-based Dr Nageswara Rao Koneti, who heads the Cardiology Division at Rainbow Children's Heart Institute, has been granted a US patent. Called KONAR-MF Occluder, the multi-functional device can close septal defects in children and adults. It is a double umbrella disc device made of nitinol, a biocompatible nickel and titanium alloy, and is stretchable up to 15 mm. It can treat various conditions, including ventricular septal defects, coronary arteriovenous fistulas, and paravalvular leaks. The device has already been patented in India, Europe (European Commission), Euro-African countries, and South Korea. The multifunctional device not only fixes multiple types of cardiac lesions but also makes advanced cardiac care more affordable for patients in India, as it costs just Rs 50,000 in India compared to Rs 1.2 lakh in Pakistan and Rs 2.5–6 lakhs in other parts of Asia and Europe, said Dr Koneti. Terming this as a proud moment for Indian science, Dr Koneti said: "This US patent validates that innovations from India can meet global standards. It took us over six years to develop the device, and we applied for CE approval in 2018.' He said the US patent now paves the way for a US FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) approval for the device, which has already been implanted in about 10-15 patients in the US on compassionate grounds. "But we can also do clinical trials in the US if required," said Dr Koneti, who is a paediatric interventional cardiologist. He pointed out that the device has already demonstrated its safety and efficacy through over 20 peer-reviewed studies, and over 10,000 of these devices have already been implanted in patients in over 90 countries across Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Africa since the device got CE approval in 2018. IIT Delhi, AIIMS To Establish Centre Of Excellence For AI In Healthcare
Last Updated: The AI-CoE aims to develop AI-based solutions that support key national health programmes., IIT Delhi stated. IIT Delhi and AIIMS Delhi have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a Centre of Excellence for AI in Healthcare (AI-CoE). The MoU was signed by Prof. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, and Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, during a ceremony at IIT Delhi. The AI-CoE aims to develop AI-based solutions that support key national health programmes. Last year, the Ministry of Education awarded the two institutes a grant of Rs 330 crore under the 'Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India' initiative, following a rigorous and competitive selection process. The proposed Centre of Excellence will serve as the implementation vehicle for this grant. 'This MoU marks the beginning of far-reaching collaborative research that has the potential to change the face of healthcare in the country," Prof. M. Srinivas, Director, AIIMS Delhi said. Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi said, 'A partnership between AIIMS and IIT Delhi has the potential to transform Artificial Intelligence for affordable healthcare. We are delighted to be shaping this national center of excellence and hope that our output will impact the lives of Indians."
