2026 4-star DB is reportedly down to Texas A&M and South Carolina
One of the cycle's potential new additions is set to announce his commitment on July 14, as 2026 four-star safety Tamarion Watkins is reportedly down to South Carolina and Texas A&M as the final two programs he will consider heading into the new month.
Watkins has been an Aggie target for quite some time, and despite the Gamecocks leading the way for the South Carolina native, Watkins feels that both programs would be an excellent fit for his versatile skill set, as the Aggies likely intend to use him as a slot corner at the next level paired with his safety responsibilities.
"Now that I've had a great time at all of these places, I've narrowed it down. I'm focused on two"
Outside of his elite coverage ability, Watkins is a form tackler who isn't afraid to make contact, especially in the box against the run. During his 2024 junior season, he recorded 75 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and three interceptions. Texas A&M's safety future is in good hands, mainly due to the youth at the position, while Elko has done a solid job in the transfer portal when replenishing position groups.
Watkins may not be a five-star prospect who's seen as an instant contributor. Still, his future is undoubtedly bright, and he should develop into a reliable defender for either defense.

Watch: Notre Dame's new starting quarterback CJ Carr's high school highlight reel
While we haven't seen much of Notre Dame football's new starting quarterback CJ Carr at this level, we can go back and look at what he did in high school. Coming out of Saline High School in Michigan, Carr was a nationally ranked prospect as the No. 68 overall recruit in the 2024 class according to the 247Sports Composite. Sure, we saw him during the past two years of Blue and Gold games, but those are set up for success for the quarterbacks. During his final season of high school, Carr would throw for 2,754 yards with 24 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, while running for 91 yards, but accounting for 9 other scores. Over his three years starting, he threw for a total of 8,135 yards with 78 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, while accounting for 312 yards rushing and 16 scores. Those are very impressive numbers from Carr, and hopefully he can replicate that success with the Irish. Check out below his senior year highlights, for a glimpse of what is to come when Notre Dame takes the field on the road against Miami at the end of the month. Steelers' Cam Heyward apologizes to Aaron Rodgers over past controversial comments
Aaron Rodgers has more than earned the respect and admiration of his Pittsburgh Steelers teammates, but it didn't start off that way, and Cam Heyward recently apologized for some comments he made early in the offseason. On Tuesday, Rodgers and DK Metcalf made special guest appearances on the Not Just Football with Cam Heyward podcast, and the Steelers defensive tackle wasted little time addressing the months-old controversy — specifically about whether the 20-year veteran QB really wanted to play in Pittsburgh. "I have to apologize," Heyward told Rodgers. "I guess my words were taken out of context when I said, 'Do you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or not?'" Rodgers admitted to being hurt but understood that Heyward didn't necessarily know who he really was at the time of the negotiating process. The veteran Steelers defender admitted his opinion has changed since. Before Rodgers signed, Steelers safety DeShon Elliott also fired a jab at the four-time MVP — claiming on social media that he should "leave his a-- at the retirement home." Both Heyward's and Elliott's comments stirred up controversy when first made, leading some Steelers fans to believe Rodgers might not sign at all. That's been the overarching theme of Rodgers' career over the past few years — many within the NFL world jumping to criticize, only to walk back their original stance on the veteran quarterback. Five thoughts on Notre Dame selecting CJ Carr as its starting quarterback
Notre Dame football made a massive announcement on Tuesday afternoon, as its named CJ Carr as the starting quarterback. The redshirt-freshman beat out redshirt-sophomore Kenny Minchey, in a battle that seems almost too close to call. Sunday's scrimmage looks like the tipping point for the Irish coaching staff, as they used Monday to review the film and make a decision. With the choice finally being made, there was plenty of thoughts that flowed through my head about the decision. Here are five thoughts on Notre Dame selecting CJ Carr as its starting quarterback against Miami. This competition might not be over While Carr was named the starter on Tuesday, this competition might not be over. Minchey is talented as well, and if his teammate struggles out of the gate, Freeman might just make a move to insert him into the lineup. There have been multiple practice reports that have Carr throwing interceptions, but as the coaches have said, it's not always the quarterbacks fault. However, if he throws a few in the opener against Miami, Freeman might have to make a change. Going with the higher-ceiling Carr makes sense I've always been in the camp that even if a players floor isn't the same, if his ceiling is higher, you go with that guy which is what Notre Dame chose to do. Carr gives the offense a much better shot at putting up points, but that is no knock on Minchey, would could as well. It's just that as the higher rated prospect coming out of high school, many had Carr as the better prospect, with a brighter future. Finally a home-grown quarterback After not having had a home-grown quarterback for the last three of the last four seasons, the Irish finally have one is Carr. They've gone through Jack Coan, Sam Hartman and Riley Leonard, having passed up on the recruited players for transfers. This year was always going to be much different, as Freeman opted to not bring in a veteran from the portal. It's a selling point for recruits as well, as they now know, they can win the job and not get passed up by a new face into the program. Living through some growing pains Don't expect the Irish offense to be a finished product early, in fact it might be a bit rocky early on. The good news is that Carr won't have to do everything by himself, as he'll have one of the top backfields and offensive line units in the country in the huddle with him. The schedule doesn't help this fact, as Carr's first two starts will be against ranked opponents in Miami and Texas A&M. We might not see great statistical lines from him early, but they'll eventually come. The multi-year starter is what this program needs As noted above, there hasn't been a multi-year starter at quarterback for Notre Dame since Ian Book, and that turned out pretty well for the Blue and Gold. His final year, the Irish would make the College Football Playoff, and while they did lose to Alabama, it justified having a guy who has been through the trails of an Irish season. Leonard was the exception, as he was already a top-level player, but the rest had solid careers, just not nearly what we saw last year. The potential for Carr to be the starter for this year and next could pay off big dividends for Notre Dame.
