"No stone should be left unturned,": Aviation safety firm's CEO on AI 171's crash report

Canada News.Net12-07-2025
New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): Martin Consulting's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mark D Martin, an aviation safety expert said on Saturday that 'no stone should be left unturned,' on investigating the AI 171 crash, and urged for the preliminary report to be 'taken into the global quorum,' so that international safety regulators could also understand the reasons for the Dreamliner 787-8's crash.
The AI 171 crash of the Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aircraft in Gujarat's Ahmedabad killed 260 people, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 people on the ground.
Martin said that one should wait for the full report to come out, but questioned certain aspects of the preliminary report which suggested pilot error, saying that it is 'highly unlikely that any pilot, especially during take-off would want to meddle or fiddle around with switches behind the thrust levels.'
'This will be a complex crash to investigate for the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board), AAIB (Aircraft Accident Investigation Board), Boeing, EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency), the Indian DGCA (Director General of Civil Aviation), and the UKCAA and no stone should be left unturned with this investigation,' read a statement from the firm's CEO.
'It is imperative that this investigation also be taken into the global quorum with the including of ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), CAA Canada and other Safety oversight regulators that manage and oversee the 787 aircraft operation in their jurisdiction,' the statement added.
The consulting firm's CEO also said that the report suggests pilot error, saying that 'It is highly unlikely that any pilot, especially during takeoff would want to meddle or fiddle around with switches behind the thrust levels. At best, you'd focus on raising the landing gear which is located in the front panel of the cockpit, or raise the flaps.'
The AAIB's Preliminary Report released on Friday said that both the engines of the aircraft were moved from 'run' to 'cutoff,' in quick succession, which resulted in the fuel supply to be cut off. The report says that in the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why he did the cutoff, which the other pilot denied ever doing so.
'The aircraft achieved the maximum recorded airspeed of 180 Knots IAS at about 08:08:42 UTC and immediately thereafter, the Engine 1 and Engine 2 fuel cutoff switches transitioned from RUN to CUTOFF position one after another with a time gap of 01 sec. The Engine N1 and N2 began to decrease from their take-off values as the fuel supply to the engines was cut off,' the preliminary report said.
'In the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cutoff. The other pilot responded that he did not do so,' the report added.
As per the Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorder (EAFR) accessed by the AAIB, the engine 1's fuel cut switch transitioned from 'cutoff' to 'run' at about 8:08:52 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). On 8:08:56 UTC the Engine 2's fuel switch also went from 'cutoff' to run'.
According to the report, just 13 seconds later, at 8:09:05 UTC, one of the pilot transmitted the Mayday call, which the Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO) enquired about, but did not receive a reply. Shortly after, the aircraft was observed crashing outside the airport boundary and the emergency response was activated.
The Airline Pilots' Association of India on Saturday also called for a 'fair, fact-based inquiry,' into the incident and rejected the 'tone and direction of the investigation' which suggested a bias towards pilot error.
'The report was leaked to media without any responsible official signature or attribution. There is lack of transparency in investigation as investigations continue to be shrouded in secrecy, undermining credibility and public trust. Qualified, experienced personnel, especially line pilots, are still not being included in the investigation team,' the association said in a statement.
Notably, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol urged people not to draw conclusions based on the preliminary report. While speaking to mediapersons, the MoS said, 'The AAIB has brought out a preliminary report. This is not the final report. Until the final report comes out, we should not arrive at any conclusion. AAIB is an autonomous authority, and the ministry does not interfere in their work.' (ANI)

"Short-term, motivated by financial gain": Former diplomat Vikas Swarup on reset in US-Pak relations

New Delhi, August 13 (ANI): Former diplomat Vikas Swarup has described the United States' current relationship with Pakistan as a short-term, tactical arrangement driven largely by financial interests, while stressing that US-India ties remain strategic in nature. In an interview with ANI, Swarup, a former High Commissioner to Canada and renowned author, said, 'We have to look at the US' relationship with Pakistan in a different lens from the US' relationship with India. I believe the current relationship with Pakistan is tactical and short-term, primarily driven by the financial gain the Trump and Witkoff families hope to make from the cryptocurrency assets in Pakistan. I think the relationship with India is much more strategic. It is not so transactional as it is with Pakistan. That is why I personally feel that it is a passing phase. I call it a storm, not a rupture. You just have to wait out the storms. All storms eventually pass.' Earlier, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce maintained that Washington's relationship with both Pakistan and India 'remains unchanged' and that US diplomats remain 'committed to both nations.' The statement followed provocative comments by Pakistan Army chief Gen Asim Munir in Florida, where he said Pakistan could use nuclear weapons to 'take down India and half the world' in an existential crisis. Swarup further said that Pakistan may have leveraged intermediaries to gain favour with the US President, potentially contributing to a softer approach towards Pakistan. This could be linked to Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir's visits to Washington and a potential 'deal' on Pakistan's oil reserves. 'I think what has happened is Pakistan, through some intermediaries, has gotten the ear of the US President and that is why, two visits by Asim Munir to Washington, the so-called 'deal' with America on so-called 'oil reserves' of Pakistan,' said Swarup. He also said that Pakistan is reportedly positioning itself as the 'Crypto King' of South Asia, possibly through its association with World Liberty Financial, which has ties to Trump's family and Steve Witkoff's family. 'More importantly, I think Pakistan is now trying to position itself as the 'Crypto King' of South Asia and there, through World Liberty Financial, in which Trump's family has stakes, Steve Witkoff's family has a stake, through that I think Pakistan has managed to project an image of itself as a reliable these things have led to Trump having a softer approach towards Pakistan,' said the former diplomat. Swarup further stressed that these tariffs are part of a broader strategy to exert pressure and secure favourable trade terms from India, in the light of Trump's 50% tariffs. The country is navigating trade tensions while prioritising national interests and avoiding concessions that might compromise its independence. 'But that does not mean that he has given up on India or that India is now an adversary for him. I think this is part of his pressure tactics to secure a more favourable deal. India should not cave in because our strategic autonomy is non-negotiable,' Swarup told ANI. The remarks come amid escalating trade tensions between New Delhi and Washington. In July, President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods along with an unspecified penalty, even as hopes for an interim trade deal were alive. Days later, he imposed another 25 per cent tariff, bringing the total to 50 per cent, citing India's purchase of Russian oil. Explaining the reasons behind the move, Swarup said, 'We have to understand why these tariffs have been imposed. I personally feel that there are three reasons. One, Trump is not happy with India because we are a member of BRICS and somehow, in his head, he has got this notion that BRICS is an anti-America alliance which is hell-bent on creating an alternative currency to the dollar. So, because of that, he feels that India should not be a member of the BRICS. Two, Operation Sindoor and his so-called role in bringing about the ceasefire.' Swarup maintained that despite the current turbulence, India-US relations are fundamentally strong and will recover once the 'storm' passes. (ANI)

US tariffs pressure tactics to get India to sign on dotted line in trade talks, we have not caved in: Vikas Swarup

New Delhi [India], August 13 (ANI): There are three reasons US President Donald Trump has imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods including his 'being miffed that India has not acknowledged his role' in cessation of hostilities with Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, former diplomat Vikas Swarup has said, noting that if there is positive outcome of Alaska talks, Russia sanctions will be off the table. In an interview with ANI, Vikas Swarup, who has been a former High Commissioner to Canada and is a renowned author, said that India has not caved in to the US pressure in trade talks to provide more access to the country's agriculture and dairy sectors. He said US is exerting pressure tactics to get India to agree to its maximalist demands. President Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs on Indian goods plus an unspecified penalty in July, even as there were hopes of an interim India-US trade deal that would have otherwise helped avoid elevated tariffs. A few days later, he imposed another 25 per cent tariff, taking the total to 50 per cent, over India's imports of Russian oil. 'We have to understand why these tariffs have been imposed. Two, Operation Sindoor and his so-called role in bringing about the ceasefire,' Vikas Swarup said. 'We have been saying right from the beginning that Trump had no role because we do not accept external mediation. This ceasefire was mediated directly between the DGMOs of Pakistan and India at the request of the DGMO of Pakistan. Trump has now said almost 30 times that it was he who got the two countries to stop back from the brink, who stopped a nuclear conflagration in the subcontinent. So, obviously he is miffed that India has not acknowledged his role, whereas Pakistan has not only acknowledged his role but has even nominated him for a Nobel Peace Prize,' he added. India had carried out Operation Sindoor in early May in response to Pahalgam terror attack and carried out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoJK. India had replled subsequent Pakistani aggression and pounded its airbases. Referring to Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) talks between India and US, Vikas Swarup said Trump is resorting to pressure tactics to get India to sign on his maximalist demands. '...This is part of his pressure tactics to get India to sign on the dotted line on the maximalist demands that the US is making with regard to access to our dairy and agriculture and GM Crops. We have not caved in and it is also in a way a signal to Russia because he is also frustrated that he has not been able to get President Putin to agree to the ceasefire that Zelenskyy has agreed to,' he said. Vikas Swarup referred to the summit meeting between President Trump and President Putin in Alaska on August 15 over the Ukraine conflict. 'Now they are meeting in Alaska on 15th August. If there is a positive outcome of the Alaska talks then I am 100% sure that the Russia sanctions will be off the table because Putin is not going to accept a ceasefire and yet be saddled with economic sanctions,' he said. India and the US initiated talks for a just, balanced, and mutually beneficial Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) in March this year, aiming to complete the first stage of the Agreement by October-November April 2, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order for reciprocal tariffs on various trade partners, imposing varied tariffs in the range of 10-50 per cent. He subsequently kept the tariffs in abeyance for 90 days, while imposing a 10 per cent baseline tariff. The deadline was to end on July 9, and the US administration later pushed it to August 1. During the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal made a statement in both Houses, affirming that the government is examining the impact of tariffs and will take all necessary steps to safeguard the national interest.
