MACC to probe Land and Minerals Dept
KUALA LUMPUR: Graft busters will investigate land encroachment in Pahang, especially in Raub, by focusing on the management aspect of the Land and Minerals Department (PTG).
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki (pic) said the investigation into land encroachment started in 2021.
'Given the new issues that have emerged, we will resume the investigation. We will investigate how the land encroachment was allowed to occur.
'We will investigate aspects of governance practised by PTG,' he told reporters after attending the graduation ceremony for participants of the Certified Integrity Officer Programme yesterday.
Pahang Sultan Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has often spoken out against land encroachment.
The Ruler said yesterday that action must be taken against those who encroached on state land.
'Don't allow anyone to encroach on Pahang's land. It is time we take firm action against them (intruders).
'Protect this land, the land of Pahang, to the best of your ability,' said Sultan Abdullah during a Hari Raya celebration in Jerantut, according to the Kesultanan Pahang Facebook page.
Previously, an enforcement operation at a durian farm in Raub led to farmers voicing their dissatisfaction over the destruction of their crops.
The Pahang government has denied violating a court order when it felled around 200 Musang King durian trees during the enforcement operation in Sungai Klau, Raub on April 8.
On another case, Azam said the MACC is expected to submit the investigation paper on Ops Sky to the deputy public prosecutor next week.
He said the investigation, which was focused on corruption and money laundering involving a financial consulting firm and officials from multiple financial institutions, had already been completed.
'I hope the DPP will expedite making a decision on further action to be taken on the case if there are no queries (on the investigation paper),' he said.
In January, Ops Sky led to the arrest of 12 people and the seizure of 4,000 documents, with 98 bank accounts frozen, amounting to over RM17mil.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said today's session lasted from 9am to 3pm, and will resume tomorrow, Bernama reported. He said the statement was recorded at the residence of the 'Tan Sri' in Kuala Lumpur because of health issues. 'So far, MACC has recorded statements from 52 witnesses, including the 'Tan Sri' and his family members. The same process will continue tomorrow,' he was quoted as saying. It was also reported that MACC officers visited the 'Tan Sri's' house in Melaka, but they did not seize anything during the operation. Previously, MACC seized RM32 million worth of assets, including luxury vehicles, watches, handbags, jewellery, cash and a high-end property, believed to be linked to a highway concessionaire with the same title.

Pahang imposes immediate vape ban
KUANTAN: Pahang has become the latest Malaysian state to ban vaping and the use of electronic cigarettes. State Islamic Religious Affairs, Rural Development, and Orang Asli Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Seri Syed Ibrahim Syed Ahmad said the Pahang Mufti's Department had issued a fatwa prohibiting the use of vape. He said the fatwa was formally conveyed to the Pahang State Legal Adviser's Office on March 3 via a document issued by the Menteri Besar's Office. "The matter was presented at the Pahang State Executive Council meeting on May 14 and received the consent of the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. "His Majesty had previously voiced concern over this issue (vape usage)," he said after chairing the State Islamic Religious Affairs sub-committee meeting at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Administrative Centre earlier today.

MACC to quiz Tan Sri over highway project funds
KUALA LUMPUR: A Tan Sri, who is under investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds linked to a Klang Valley highway project, is expected to be called in for questioning soon. The individual, who was recently discharged from hospital, is also being investigated for overseas asset ownership and high-stakes gambling activities involving millions of ringgit. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that the Tan Sri, who is believed to be a highway concession holder, had yet to give his statement due to recent medical treatment at a private hospital. 'A statement has not yet been recorded from the Tan Sri, but I have been informed that doctors have recently allowed him to be discharged. My officers will be contacting him soon to arrange an appointment,' Azam told Astro Awani when contacted on Saturday. He added that while the individual is a key witness in the case, MACC has already recorded statements from 45 other witnesses, some of whom have been recalled to assist further in the investigation. 'He is indeed one of the individuals we have yet to question, but we already have testimonies from other witnesses. I cannot confirm whether additional witnesses will be required after his statement,' Azam said. According to sources, MACC had earlier obtained medical confirmation from the treating doctor regarding the Tan Sri's condition before proceeding to plan for his interview. The investigation centres around the suspected misappropriation of sukuk bonds intended for the construction of a highway. On June 3 last year, MACC disclosed that it had seized assets valued about RM143mil from the individual as part of the probe. They included luxury vehicles and properties owned by the Tan Sri, both locally and abroad, including in London and Switzerland. The seized assets comprised 14 personal bank accounts with RM4.5mil, eight company accounts with RM33mil, a luxury condominium and a parcel of land valued at RM24.5mil, nine luxury cars worth RM7.65mil, designer watches valued at around RM25mil, handbags worth RM3mil, jewellery and diamonds estimated at RM6mil and four horses valued at RM400,000. Other seized items included high-end alcoholic beverages worth RM3mil, foreign assets estimated at over RM15mil and gambling-related activities involving about RM20mil. A notice to declare assets has already been issued to the Tan Sri and related parties.
