Paul Danan's final days in 'secluded dry house' before fatal drugs cocktail
Former Hollyoaks actor and Celebrity Love Island star Paul Danan died in January at the age of 46 after taking a lethal mix of heroin and cocaine, an inquest has heard
The death of Hollyoaks and reality TV star Paul Danan from a cocktail of drugs was a misadventure, a coroner has concluded.
Paul, 46, played bad boy Sol Patrick from 1997 to 2001 on the Channel 4 soap and was later known for his reality TV appearances, including on Celebrity Big Brother and Celebrity Love Island. An inquest into his death was held at Avon Coroner's Court in Flax Bourton, near Bristol, before Assistant Coroner Debbie Rookes on Wednesday.
The hearing was told how Paul was found unresponsive and slumped on his sofa in front of the television at his home in Brislington, Bristol, on January 15 this year. Emergency services attended the scene and confirmed that he had died. His body was identified there by his partner, Melissa Crooks.
His death was not treated as suspicious by authorities. MailOnline previously reported that Paul had been staying in his luxury apartment block to try and get clean from drugs. In a podcast last year, Paul told how he was living in a "dry house" in Bristol, which is believed to be the flat where he was found dead. The Grade II listed property has a swimming pool, gym and tennis court.
His neighbours told the publication that Paul "kept himself to himself" in his first-floor, one-bedroom apartment, and they thought he lived there alone. One resident said: "I didn't know he was famous, I don't think anyone living here knew who he was until he died. His family has been here since and asked us not to say anything."
Paul was due to appear in court over driving and drug offences the day his death was announced. He was set to enter a plea at Warrington Magistrates Court in Cheshire after being charged with being in possession of several bags of cocaine as well as a 'quantity' of cannabis. He was also accused of driving a vehicle whilst under the influence of drugs in October in Warrington.
Just a week before his death, the actor had taken to social media platform Instagram to act out a Shakespeare scene. Along with a video of his impressive scene work, he wrote: "Audition for A Twelfth Night to play Orsino. It's been a long time since I've gone near a bit of the master that is our pioneer Sir William Shakespeare.
"You forget what a genius he really was and remember how beautiful and exhilarating it is when you get stuck into tackling his work. It's an amazing experience! I forget sometimes how much I need to be awoken... #twelfthnight #stafford #shakespeare." The recital was applauded by his friend Calum Best, and fans said in the comments that "he's still got it" and "awesome".
Paul is understood to have been put forward for Celebs Go Dating and was said to have been "feeling optimistic" about his future. The actor, who suffered two near-death experiences before he died, had been very candid about the ups and downs of his career. Months before his death, Paul discussed how he ended up working in a phone shop after the offers dried up.
On a podcast in November, he said: "It's very tough. I mean, maybe years ago, I shouldn't have left Hollyoaks, but I made that decision because, after four years, I didn't want to be typecast and back then, everyone didn't want to be the next Ken Barlow. You wanted to go off and play different roles, especially when you're a real actor."
Paul explained how starring in reality shows led to the demise of his career. He said: "It was a detriment to my acting career because it didn't help. Maybe if I had stayed in the background and didn't make a big splash, I would probably have been alright. But you know me, if I'm on a show, I'm going to give it my all and be TV gold! It didn't help with my acting career because suddenly people were like 'Oh, we don't want to hire a reality star!'"
A postmortem examination concluded that his death was due to combined toxicity of heroin, methadone, codeine, pregabalin, cocaine and zopiclone, contributed to by benzodiazepine use. Ms Rookes reached a conclusion that Danan had died by misadventure after hearing written statements from emergency services, doctors, and his mother Beverley Danan.
The statement from Mrs Danan said: "Paul helped so many people from all walks of life but just couldn't help himself in the same way. His smiling face and love of life will always be remembered."
Ms Rookes told the hearing there was no evidence that Danan, who suffered an accidental overdose in May 2024, had intended to take his own life. A previous hearing was told that no note was left by Danan.
Two months after his overdose, he told his GP that he'd had "suicidal ideation" but had no plans to act on these. He was subsequently placed under psychological care in the community. He also asked to be signed off work as he was too unwell to carry on working.
The coroner said: "Paul Danan was clearly much loved and is very much missed. Mr Danan had a long history of drug misuse and struggles with his mental health. His death was caused by a combination of drugs, both prescription and illicit.
"Paul had struggled with his mental health for many years. He had taken an overdose in May 2024 but he was adamant that this was accidental and he didn't have any intention to end his life.
"Although he had occasional suicidal thoughts, he didn't have any active plans. I don't have any evidence before me that Paul intended to take his own life at this time. Therefore, the conclusion is misadventure."

JoJo Siwa addresses her sexuality amid shock new romance with Chris Hughes
JoJo Siwa marked the start of 2025 Pride Month with a poignant message for her social media followers. Taking to Instagram Stories on Sunday, the 22-year-old former child star wrote, 'Happy day 1 of the happiest month. What I have learned over the last 22 years is that pride is all about love, acceptance and celebration.' She added, 'No matter who you are or what you are, you are you, you are beautiful, and you are perfect. Everyone's story is different and everyone's journey is different.' Siwa — who shocked fans when she started dating Celebrity Big Brother UK costar Chris Hughes, 32, in April — declared that the 'most beautiful thing' about love is 'that it's just love.' In conclusion, she wrote, 'Happy pride to the beautiful LGBTQIA+ community, to the allies, and to all that exist:).' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. While starring on season 24 of Celebrity Big Brother UK, JoJo shared, 'I've always told myself I'm a lesbian, but I think being here, I've realized, "Oh no, I'm not a lesbian, I'm queer." I think that's really cool. I'm switching letters.' Later, while speaking to Us Weekly, the former Dance Moms personality said she thought the statement wouldn't make it to television. 'That was one of those conversations actually that I was having that I was like, "This will never see the light of day." I don't mind that it did, because I actually think it starts a very beautiful conversation of queer. I think queer joy is so special and so magical,' she told the outlet. She went on to reject putting her sexuality 'in a box.' 'Queer is a beautiful umbrella term for the LGBTQIA community,' Siwa emphasized. 'I think that for me to be a woman and say I have a non-binary partner, but then also say I'm a lesbian is crazy. 'I just realized within myself that the way my eyes are to the world, I think I'm just queer. It has nothing to do with anything besides that. It's nothing to be ashamed of. The world is going crazy with that one though. It flabbergasts me.' Before launching her romance with Huges, JoJo was in a brief relationship with Australian content creator Kath Ebbs, who is non-binary. Their unceremonious breakup happened at the Celebrity Big Brother UK wrap party in April. Back in 2022, Siwa was forced to defend herself after telling Yahoo! Life she doesn't like the word 'lesbian.' She took to TikTok to clarify her statement and address scrutiny from fans, stating, 'I never said that 'lesbian' was a dirty word.' In the interview with the publication the former Lifetime star said, 'I don't like the word itself. It's just like a lot. But I mean, at the end of the day, that's what I am.' She compared it to the word 'moist,' which some people don't like because of the way it sounds phonetically. 'It's like the word moist. It's just like… ugh!' she added, much to the dismay of some of her followers. She reiterated on TikTok, 'I never would say that it's a dirty word because it is not. It's not a bad word, it's not a slur, it's especially not a word that I am ashamed of saying or ashamed of identifying as by any means. The the blond dancer added, 'I don't hate the word lesbian. Whenever someone talks to me about my sexuality I just say that I'm gay.

JoJo Siwa says Chris Hughes feels like family and her mother ‘adores' him
The two met in the ITV1 Celebrity Big Brother house, growing close during their time on the reality show, claiming their relationship was 'platonic'. Since leaving the house, they have been seen together and recently shared photographs of them together on Instagram, suggesting they are in a relationship. A post shared by JoJo Siwa (@itsjojosiwa) Siwa, 22, told Channel 4's Sunday Brunch: 'She (Siwa's mother) does love him. My parents think the absolute world of him and him and my dad are like best friends. 'Chris was actually telling me that yesterday they went to the spa together. They're literally best friends. 'Mum, she absolutely adores him. I love watching her watch us because I've never seen my mum so happy. 'It feels like we're a family. It feels like he's been in my family for however many years. It feels like they just all get along as well as I do. 'I think there will definitely be a lot more time spent here, and I think from him as well, a lot more time spent over there, but we both have families, you know, on either end.' The 22-year old singer is known for her songs Karma and Guilty Pleasure, which she released in 2024, while sports presenter Hughes, 32, appeared on the third season of the ITV reality TV series Love Island. Speaking about her decision to join Celebrity Big Brother, she said: 'I didn't even question a yes or no. I knew it wasn't even a question. It was an immediate yes. 'I think for me, growing up on reality TV, it almost feels like a little bit of home to me, and it just feels like it's just fun. 'And right before I went in, I told my mom, I was like, I think this is gonna be the best thing I've ever done. And she's like, what do you mean? And I was like, I don't know, something tells me, like for my personal, like for my life, it feels like it's gonna be the best thing I've ever done and by a landslide it has been. 'Being on Big Brother you're captured 24/7 so for people to just get to see the real me was something that I wasn't sure how to share, essentially on my own, I guess I wasn't brave enough to share it.' The Celebrity Big Brother final saw Coronation Street actor Jack P Shepherd crowned the winner. Siwa placed third on the ITV1 reality show while Hughes came sixth.

Chef Jamie Oliver says dyslexia documentary was ‘most painful' thing he has done
The 50-year old celebrity chef has lived with the learning difficulty all his life and will now present a one-hour documentary on Channel 4 titled Jamie's Dyslexia Revolution. The show will dive into the challenges and issues children with dyslexia face in Britain while asking whether the Government can do more to fix the education system. Speaking to the Sunday Times, Oliver said: 'I'm unpacking quite a lot of stuff. 'I thought I'd buried it but it's hitting a nerve. 'Genuinely, of all the things I've ever done, this documentary is the most viscerally painful,' 'I've seen so many high-flying, talented, grown men cry about this — I've just done it to you — the concept of being worthless (when you're) young is real. It's really triggering.' According to the NHS dyslexia is described as a 'common learning difficulty that causes problems with reading, writing and spelling'. Having left school with two GCSEs, the chef opened up about the challenges he faced, adding that the kitchen 'saved' him. He said: 'I didn't have any extra time in exams, there were no strategies, just a bit of extra tutoring help. 'There was no robust dyslexic knowledge then.' He also described feeling 'stupid, worthless and thick' and developing 'a hatred of words and a total resentment for education' while other students called him a 'stupid dunce', leaving him with a 'deep-seated feeling of constantly being behind'. 'I didn't tell mum, dad or the teachers. I just bottled it up inside. 'The kitchen saved me. I knew I had something to offer. I knew I wasn't a useless piece of shit.' The Essex-born chef and author is known for hosting cooking shows and documentaries including The Naked Chef and Jamie's Kitchen along with publishing a series of cookbooks including Jamie's 30-Minute Meals. He has also been an avid campaigner over the years including calling on the Government for greater provisions for healthier school meals and playing a role in imposing a sugar tax on soft drinks. He is now campaigning for greater support in schools, calling for early screenings for dyslexia and neurodiversity. Oliver added: 'We also need more training for teachers. In a two to three-year training course only about half a day is given to neurodiversity. 'I've only got love for teachers, we need to appreciate them more. 'But they want to be trained, they want to have the tools to notice, understand and react.' Jamie's Dyslexia Revolution can be watched on Channel 4 on June 9 at 9pm.
