Sholay@50: RD Burman's Beer Bottles and Whistles Crafted an Iconic Score
In our series marking Sholay's 50th anniversary, we explore RD Burman's revolutionary score, blending Western and Indian melodies with quirky instruments like beer bottles, crafting a timeless masterpiece that still captivates. Legendary composer RD Burman had a peculiar habit. After composing a song's tune, he would record it with dummy lyrics—often gibberish or colourful expletives—for singers to practice. Despite such quirks, Burman, fondly known as Pancham, crafted some of the greatest music in Hindi and Bengali cinema. But few stand taller than his work in Sholay. Blending Indian and Western musical elements with ease, he experimented with unconventional instruments like coconut shells and beer bottles. The result wasn't just a film score. It was music that helped turn Sholay into a cinematic legend. The first 25 minutes of Sholay are a symphony of iron, hooves, whistles and gunfire. A train's horn pierces the air, its wheels clattering as it grinds into a dusty station. Steam hisses, smoke curls into the clear sky, and a lone figure steps onto the platform, where a man in a dhoti is waiting. 'Err, Thakur sahab,' the visitor says. 'Aaiye, jailor sahab,' the man replies, his voice steady as stone. A bird chirps, hooves clop in the distance, and a sharp guitar riff cuts through the stillness. A French horn swells, strings and percussion surge, weaving a vivid clash of sights and sounds as the titles roll across the screen. As the name of MS Shinde—the film's masterful editor—flashes, a melodic whistle floats through the rugged terrain, echoing like a call to adventure. Thus begins the descent into Ramgarh—a world where law and chaos collide in a blaze of vengeance. The guitar riff and the whistling—by Manohari Singh—aren't just stylistic nods to spaghetti Westerns. Like RD Burman's score itself, they become characters, each sonic pulse a lasting memory. Crafting this sound was no small feat. Director Ramesh Sippy demanded stereophonic sound—a rarity in 1970s Indian cinema—to envelop audiences in a vivid, spatial experience. To match the grandeur of Sholay's dynamic action, Burman summoned a 50-60-piece orchestra, a juggernaut of talent featuring legends like Shivkumar Sharma on santoor, Bhupinder Singh on guitar, Manohari Singh on saxophone and flute, and Kersi Lord on synthesiser. Every instrument, every note, became iconic. Who can forget Jai's mournful harmonica – played by Bhanu Gupta – as he watches Radha (Jaya Bhaduri) extinguish lamps, each note heavy with unspoken longing? Burman's genius extends to Sholay's heart: the bond between Jai and Veeru, the film's iconic duo. We first see them on a train under attack from dacoits, another scene that captures Pancham's brilliance. Horses gallop, bullets scream, a coal engine races through the hilly terrain like a roaring cheetah, its cry shattering the sky. In the background, brass instruments, tablas and strings drive the sense of urgency and chaos. Burman employs sharp, staccato brass, dafli and string sections to match the rhythm of the train and horses to heighten the intensity of the chase and gunfire. Later, their bromance blossoms with Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge—a jubilant anthem of friendship capturing their carefree spirit. The song required three weeks of Burman's persistence and Sippy's patience. Author Anna Morcom analyses this song in riveting detail (Hindi Film Songs and the Cinema: 2007), describing how fast-paced violins take it to dizzy heights. If Jai and Veeru were the heart, Gabbar Singh, played by Amjad Khan, was Sholay's soul. When Gabbar first appears, the score is a masterclass in building dread and establishing his larger-than-life presence. As the scene unfolds in the rocky ravines of Ramgarh, the music begins with a low, ominous drone—like jackals wailing in the wilderness. The metal of Gabbar's bandolier clangs on a rock, his heavy bootsteps crunch the gravel with deliberate slow movement, prolonging the tension. As his face erupts on the screen, a sudden, jagged guitar riff slices through, raw and electrifying, mirroring the glint of danger in Gabbar's eyes. After a moment's silence, the wail resumes. The rhythm is deliberately uneven, almost arrhythmic at times, creating a sense of unpredictability that mirrors Gabbar's volatile nature. Ramesh Sippy was always confident of the score's success. He sold its rights for a staggering Rs 5 lakh. Acquired by Polydor, the film's vinyl LPs became a rage, its dialogues a collector's item in every Indian household. Six years after its launch, Sholay's soundtrack was still the highest - seller, earning it a platinum disc, the first in Indian cinema. The film's high point was Burman's Mehbooba, Mehbooba—a cabaret number whose beats swayed with Helen's hips. The song was inspired by Demis Roussous' Say You Love Me, a number that Sippy's wife had heard in London. Burman wanted Asha Bhonsle to sing it, but finally he recorded it in his voice. To match the rhythm of Helen's moves, Burman blended Sharma's santoor with the sound of half-filled beer bottles. As Burman's voice thrummed through speakers, it created a trance-like atmosphere in theatres, making people dance and whistle in the aisles. Burman faced plagiarism accusations for Mehbooba, Mehbooba, but defended its inclusion, citing director Ramesh Sippy's insistence. In its golden jubilee year, the music of Sholay thrives like a living monument. From the haunting harmonica to the electrifying guitar riffs, Burman's music doesn't just accompany the film; it defines it. Its songs and score continue to inspire, reminding us of the magic that unfolds when innovation meets Burman's passion in the world of cinema. Brandon Blackstock, Kelly Clarkson's Former Manager And Ex-Husband, Passes Away At 48
Last Updated: Brandon Blackstock, Kelly Clarkson's ex-husband, died at 48 after battling cancer. He managed artists like Rascal Flatts and Blake Shelton. Brandon Blackstock, who managed artists and was once married to singer Kelly Clarkson, has died at the age of 48 after a lengthy fight with cancer. The family confirmed the news to People, asking for privacy at this difficult time. Brandon Blackstock dies of cancer 'It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away," a representative for the family told People. 'Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time." When Clarkson postponed her Las Vagas residency Clarkson postponed the remaining dates of her Las Vegas residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace as Blackstock's health declined. 'While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children's father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them," she wrote in a statement issued less than 24 hours before Blackstock's death was revealed. 'I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows, and I so appreciate your grace, kindness, and understanding." Blackstock and Clarkson first crossed paths in 2006 at a rehearsal for the Academy of Country Music Awards, but their romantic relationship began in February 2012. They became engaged in December 2012 and married on Oct. 20, 2013. The couple had two children together: daughter River Rose, born in June 2014, and son Remington Alexander, born in April 2016. Blackstock also had two older children, son Seth and daughter Savannah, from his marriage to Melissa Ashworth; that marriage ended in 2012. Professionally, Brandon Blackstock came from a music-business family. He was the son of Narvel Blackstock, who founded Starstruck Entertainment in 1988, and the stepson of country star Reba McEntire. McEntire announced a marital and professional split from Narvel in 2015 after 35 years of working together. Their marriage ended when Clarkson filed for divorce on June 4, 2020. In November 2020, a judge granted Clarkson primary custody of their two children, citing an 'increased" 'level of conflict between the parents." Subsequent court rulings addressed financial claims between the former spouses. A judge later ordered that Blackstock receive nearly $200,000 a month in spousal and child support after he had asked for $436,000. Separate legal disputes over commissions from his work at Starstruck Management persisted for years. In November 2023, a California labor commissioner ruled that Blackstock must repay Clarkson $2.6 million in commissions he had earned while representing her. The ruling said those deals should have been handled by her Creative Artists Agency team and noted: 'Under the Talent Agencies Act (TAA), a manager, like any person without a talent agency license, cannot procure or attempt to procure employment for artists." The ruling cited deals he negotiated for Clarkson with The Voice, Norwegian Cruise Line, Wayfair and the Billboard Music Awards; her contract with 'The Kelly Clarkson Show" was not included in the decision. Remaining lawsuits between the former spouses were resolved in the spring of 2024, leading to the cancellation of a planned fall trial. The terms of that settlement were not made public. On the creative front, Clarkson channeled much of the relationship's arc into her 2023 concept album Chemistry. 'All of it was written two, three years ago," she told Variety in 2023. 'It was very important for me to not just have a divorce album. I wanted an entire relationship to be covered. You listen to 'Magic' and it's like, 'Man, I'm willing to do this for you. Like, we all have our own damage. I have mine too; I'll share mine, you share yours; we can do this.' It's every stage of a relationship, and that was very important to me, rather than just having a breakup album." Who was Brandon Blackstock? Brandon Blackstock was also a TV producer. He was born on December 16, 1976, in Fort Worth, Texas, to music manager Narvel Blackstock and producer Elisa Gayle Ritter. After his parents divorced in 1988, his father married country star Reba McEntire in 1989, making her Brandon's stepmother. Growing up in a family deeply involved in entertainment, Brandon later followed the same path. He managed artists like Rascal Flatts and Blake Shelton and worked at his father's company, Starstruck Entertainment. He is survived by his four children. The family has requested privacy as they mourn. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
