Despite such quirks, Burman, fondly known as Pancham, crafted some of the greatest music in Hindi and Bengali cinema. But few stand taller than his work in Sholay. Blending Indian and Western musical elements with ease, he experimented with unconventional instruments like coconut shells and beer bottles. The result wasn't just a film score. It was music that helped turn Sholay into a cinematic legend. The first 25 minutes of Sholay are a symphony of iron, hooves, whistles and gunfire. A train's horn pierces the air, its wheels clattering as it grinds into a dusty station. Steam hisses, smoke curls into the clear sky, and a lone figure steps onto the platform, where a man in a dhoti is waiting. 'Err, Thakur sahab,' the visitor says. 'Aaiye, jailor sahab,' the man replies, his voice steady as stone. A bird chirps, hooves clop in the distance, and a sharp guitar riff cuts through the stillness. A French horn swells, strings and percussion surge, weaving a vivid clash of sights and sounds as the titles roll across the screen. As the name of MS Shinde—the film's masterful editor—flashes, a melodic whistle floats through the rugged terrain, echoing like a call to adventure. Thus begins the descent into Ramgarh—a world where law and chaos collide in a blaze of vengeance. The guitar riff and the whistling—by Manohari Singh—aren't just stylistic nods to spaghetti Westerns. Like RD Burman's score itself, they become characters, each sonic pulse a lasting memory. Crafting this sound was no small feat. Director Ramesh Sippy demanded stereophonic sound—a rarity in 1970s Indian cinema—to envelop audiences in a vivid, spatial experience. To match the grandeur of Sholay's dynamic action, Burman summoned a 50-60-piece orchestra, a juggernaut of talent featuring legends like Shivkumar Sharma on santoor, Bhupinder Singh on guitar, Manohari Singh on saxophone and flute, and Kersi Lord on synthesiser. Every instrument, every note, became iconic. Who can forget Jai's mournful harmonica – played by Bhanu Gupta – as he watches Radha (Jaya Bhaduri) extinguish lamps, each note heavy with unspoken longing? Burman's genius extends to Sholay's heart: the bond between Jai and Veeru, the film's iconic duo. We first see them on a train under attack from dacoits, another scene that captures Pancham's brilliance. Horses gallop, bullets scream, a coal engine races through the hilly terrain like a roaring cheetah, its cry shattering the sky.
