Jets owner Woody Johnson buying Crystal Palace with $254 million investment
Jets owner Woody Johnson is making a leap into Premier League soccer.
John Textor has agreed to sell Eagle Football's 43 percent stake in Crystal Palace to Johnson, The Athletic reported Monday morning.
The sale is believed to be worth close to 190 million pounds, or $254 million, according to BBC.
Johnson purchased the Jets for $635 million in 2000, and he'll now add a second sports franchise to his portfolio, becoming one of an increasing number of sports owners to diversify their investments across multiple leagues and sports.
The purchase must be ratified by the Premier League through the Owners' and Directors' test, although that process is widely expected to happen quickly and without issue given Johnson's experience owning the Jets.

Johnson, an heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical fortune, has a net worth of $9.1 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
He's also the former U.S. ambassador to the U.K., having held the position from 2017-2021 under the first term of President Donald Trump.
Johnson made a failed bid at buying Chelsea in 2022, after former owner Roman Abramovich, a Russian businessman, was sanctioned by the U.K. government in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Johnson's purchase could spell good news for Crystal Palace's hopes of competing in the UEFA Europa League next season, which were in question even after earning a berth by winning the 2024-25 FA Cup.

Under Textor, the club could have been denied the ability to compete in the Europa League due to multi-club ownership rules – since Textor's Eagle Football group also owns the French club Lyon, which also qualified for the Europa League.
Textor, 59, is an American businessman who is the former executive chairman of FuboTV.

He invested $115 million into a 40 percent stake in Crystal Palace in 2021, becoming a co-owner with Steve Parish, David Blitzer and Josh Harris.
Blitzer and Harris co-own the Devils and 76ers through the Harris Blitzer Sports Entertainment management company, and Harris also owns the Commanders after purchasing the team from Dan Snyder in 2023.

Jaguars pick two-time All-Pro and Super Bowl Champion in PFF's 2013 NFL redraft
In PFF's 2013 NFL redraft, the Jaguars selected an All-Pro offensive lineman and Super Bowl Champion in the first round. If the Jacksonville Jaguars could go back in time and reselect in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft, who would they pick? Pro Football Focus recently redrafted the entire first round of the 2013 NFL draft, using hindsight and their grading as their guide. After a 2-14 season in 2012, the Jaguars held the second overall pick in this draft and selected offensive tackle Luke Joeckel. But this time around, PFF had the Jaguars picking tackle Lane Johnson instead. "Johnson's production and consistency continue to impress into his mid-to-late 30s," wrote PFF. "He has earned at least an 80.0 PFF overall grade in nine of his 12 NFL seasons. He set a career record at the age of 34 with an 88.9 mark in 2024 en route to a second Super Bowl victory with the Eagles. Johnson has also amazingly allowed just six sacks over the past six seasons, spanning nearly 3,000 pass-blocking snaps." Johnson, who is still playing, has spent his entire 12-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles as their right tackle. This includes making 158 starts during that span, winning two Super Bowls, along with being a six-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro. Johnson has also been named a second-team All-Pro three times. Joeckel, meanwhile, was not selected in the first round of PFF's redraft. He played four seasons with the Jaguars, making 50 starts, and then spent the 2017 season with Seattle, which was the last year that Joeckel saw regular-season snaps.

Textor sells Crystal Palace stake to boost hopes of European competition
New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has agreed to buy John Textor's 43 percent stake in Crystal Palace in a deal that could boost the Eagles' hopes of playing in the Europa League next season. The London club qualified for Europe for the first time in their history in May, beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final to win their first major trophy. Advertisement However, US businessman Textor has a majority stake in French side Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League. Under UEFA multi-club ownership rules, it looked as though Palace would miss out because they finished lower in the Premier League (12th) than Lyon (6th) in Ligue 1 last season. The BBC reported that Johnson, a former US ambassador to the United Kingdom, would pay £190 million ($255 million) for the shares. "Crystal Palace Football Club can confirm that Robert Wood Johnson, 'Woody', an American businessman and co-owner of the New York Jets, has signed a legally binding contract to purchase Eagle Football's holding in the club," Palace said in a statement on Monday. Advertisement "Whilst the completion is pending approval from the Premier League and Women's Super League, we do not envisage any issues and look forward to welcoming Woody as a partner and director of the club." Johnson, 78, is one of the heirs to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical empire and had a net worth of $9.2 billion in 2024, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. In 2022 he missed out in a bid to buy Chelsea and is close to US President Donald Trump, under whom he served. Textor, who also owns a significant stake in Brazilian side Botafogo, initially invested in Palace in 2021. A decision by UEFA on Palace's participation in European competition is expected before the end of the month. kca/jw/jc

NFL analyst predicts Bears make playoff run after impressive offseason
The Chicago Bears are aiming to go from worst to first under new head coach Ben Johnson, which won't be easy in one of the toughest divisions in football. But they've had quite the impactful offseason that could make them a surprising contender. That started with the hiring of Johnson as head coach and his vision was clear in the team's new additions. Chicago overhauled the entire interior offensive line with the trades for guards Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson and signed center Drew Dalman in free agency. They continued in the draft with tackle Ozzy Trapilo, who's competing for the starting left tackle job. Meanwhile, the Bears continued to add to their playmakers with the draft selections of tight end Colston Loveland and wide receiver Luther Burden III. They also addressed the defensive trenches with the free-agent additions of defensive tackle Grady Jarrett and defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo. Bucky Brooks dubbed the Bears one of the five teams that won the 2025 offseason, where he praised the Johnson hiring and Chicago beefing up their pass blockers and pass catchers. But more than that, Brooks expects Chicago to live up to the hype (unlike last year) as a "dark horse contender" that has a chance to "enjoy a worst-to-first rise in the NFC North." "The table is set for the Bears to make a playoff run this season," wrote Brooks. "They have upgraded their play-caller, playmakers and pass protectors to ensure Williams sparks a turnaround as a sophomore." There were many who had Chicago pegged as potential contenders last season, following the selection of quarterback Caleb Williams, but that ended with a 5-12 record that included a 10-game losing streak. But this year feels different with Johnson running the show. His vision has been clear with what he's expecting, and he's the kind of leader this team was begging for last season. Although, the Bears also have the second most difficult strength of schedule this season, so they will be tested. But they'll have a chance to contend if they take care of business in the NFC North.
