Suffering from leprosy as a child, she delivered Bollywood's biggest romantic hit, quit films to marry a man twice her age; walked out of a traumatic marriage at 27
She recalled, 'I was suffering from leprosy at that time. I was about 12 years old. I had it on my elbow. So this man, turned around and said, 'I'll see that you get ostracised from school'. That was the first time I heard that word. I didn't even know what that meant.'
Dimple admitted that her medical condition ultimately led her to meeting Raj Kapoor. 'Raj Kapoor wanted to meet this girl. He was told there is this beautiful girl and she is suffering from leprosy. Out of this kind of a setback, there was a lot to gain and that's how I got Bobby. It was the most fabulous time of my life. Anything that I said or wanted or desired, just happened. It was magical. Absolutely magical,' she said.
Despite gaining fame and money at such a young age, Dimple took the unusual step of marrying 30-year-old Rajesh Khanna when she was just 15. She had shared that she was his biggest fan, admired the superstar, and decided to marry him after meeting him in a flight.
'We were going to Ahmedabad on a private flight for a function. He sat next to me. I was looking at him. Rajesh Khanna, I mean come on guys, give me a break. I very chalaak-ly told him, 'Wahan toh bohot crowd hoga, bheed hogi. Aap mera haath pakdoge na? (That place will be very crowded right? Will you hold my hand?)' He said, 'Haan bilkul (Yes, why not).' I replied, 'Hamesha ke liye? (Will you hold my hand forever?)' And the rest is history. It happened,' she had recalled.
While talking at FICCI Flo Jaipur Chapter, Dimple admitted she was so naive that she married Rajesh thinking he would sing songs to her like in his films. 'I swear I am not lying, because I was so young. And there was such an impact of the movies. Toh jab mountains pe pohanche aur gaana bhi nahi hua, hawa bhi nahi chali toh meri toh haalat kharab ho gayi (So when we reached on the mountains but there was no song and no gust of wind, I was in a bad state) because my dream was shattered. Because I seriously believed it. I mean how dumb can you get? But well that was me,' she said.
After their marriage, Dimple quit acting and focused on her family life. The couple welcomed two daughters, Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna.
While Rajesh Khanna didn't explicitly prohibit Dimple from acting, he made it clear he expects her to take care of their children. In a later interview, he had recalled, 'I had no problems about my wife working. But when I married Dimple, I wanted a mother for my children. I didn't want them to be brought up by servants. And I had no idea of Dimple's talent; Bobby was still not released. If I knew at that moment that Bobby would prove her talent, I wouldn't have stopped her. To curb talent is cruel. By the time I saw Bobby our first daughter was already born.'
The cracks in Dimple's marriage with Rajesh began to show when the actor's stardom started fading in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His films struggled at the box office, and he found it difficult to cope with the failure. This strain began affecting their marriage. After trying to make the relationship work, Dimple eventually left the superstar alone at his iconic Mumbai bungalow in 1984. She later said that she was too young to understand how the fall from grace was impacting Khanna.
In a 1994 interview with Pritish Nandy, Dimple admitted that marrying the yesteryear star was a wrong decision, as she was too young to understand marriage and everything that came with it. 'I think we were two very different kind of people. And I was probably very young to understand what was happening to this man who was a superstar. I mean I have never been able to understand stars and their behaviour pattern at all because I am not one myself. It's very difficult for me to… I couldn't understand it. I just couldn't understand it,' she said.
When asked if she remembered that period clearly, she said it was 'very clear.' And when the interviewer asked if 'it was traumatic,' she simply replied, 'Yes it was.'
After separating from Rajesh Khanna, Dimple made a comeback to films at the age of 25 with Ramesh Sippy's Saagar, opposite her Bobby co-star Rishi Kapoor. The film became the talk of the town, partly due to a swimsuit scene that was considered daring for a mother of two at the time.
Relationship rumours between Dimple and Rishi Kapoor were rampant after Bobby's release and gained traction again after Saagar due to the kissing scenes the two shared in the film. Since her comeback, Dimple has carved a niche for herself in films and continues to remain relevant even today with her powerful performances.

Madam president
Actor Shwetha Menon has broken the glass ceiling in the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) after being elected as its first woman president. Since its inception in 1994, the actors' body in the Malayalam film industry never had a woman as its president or general secretary. The 51-year-old defeated senior actor Devan to clinch the lead post in a keen electoral race held on August 15. She has a trusted lieutenant in actor Kukku Parameswaran, who was elected as the first woman general secretary of the association. The election to the 17-member executive committee was necessitated after the previous committee led by its president and actor Mohanlal stepped down on August 27, 2024, following the release of the Hema Committee report on the problems faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. The committee was disbanded as allegations of sexual abuse and misbehaviour were raised against its members, including the office-bearers. Born in Chandigarh as the daughter of an Indian Air Force official, Shwetha entered the tinsel town in 1991 after she was paired opposite actor Mammootty in the movie Anaswaram. She shot into national fame after she won the Femina Miss India Asia Pacific title in 1994 and became the Gladrags female supermodel in the same year. She sizzled in ad films and walked the ramp with elan before trying her luck in Bollywood in 1997 through the movie Ishq. Some of her Hindi movies included Asoka, Maqbool and Corporate. Her performance as Cheeru in director Ranjith's Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha won her the Kerala State Film Award for the Best Actress in 2009. She repeated her stellar performance in 2011 and won the best actress in the Kerala Film Award for her portrayal of Maya, a dubbing artiste and foodie, in Aashiq Abu's Salt N' Pepper. She has worked in over 100 movies in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, besides hosting various TV shows. She has had her share of controversies in her over three-decade-old career. In November 2013, she lodged a police complaint alleging that then Congress MP N. Peethambara Kurup had physically misbehaved with her. She later withdrew it after he tendered an apology. She received brickbats from a section of viewers after she allowed her delivery to be recorded on camera and use the footage in filmmaker Blessy's Kalimannu in which she played the lead role. The Kerala High Court, which heard the matter, refused to intervene saying the actor had consented to the shooting of her delivery and there was no violation of her fundamental right. Illegal bans She never ruffled feathers with the protracted male-dominated leadership in the association. However, she did not remain mute after the Hema panel report was published while asserting that she had also faced illegal bans. She resigned from the Internal Complaints Committee of the association, along with actors Maala Parvathi and Kukku Parameswaran in 2022 following the reluctance of then leadership to take action against actor-producer Vijay Babu in a case registered by the Kochi city police on charges of alleged rape of a young woman actor and revealing the identity of the survivor. Just a week before the election, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against her by the Kochi city police under Section 67 A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, on a complaint lodged by a native of Ernakulam 'for making financial gains through her roles in movies having alleged vulgar and obscene content'. Speculations were rife that the complaint was allegedly aided by her detractors from within the association. The actor heaved a sigh of relief after the Kerala High Court stayed the proceedings in connection with the FIR. Despite the scenes of jubilation over the election of women in lead roles in the association, the way forward may not be a cakewalk for her in view of the internal rift and mud-slinging witnessed ahead of the election. The fissures within the organisation seem deep and will require her to pull out all the stops to stay afloat.

Farhan Akhtar reacts to Naseeruddin Shah's critical comments on his acting: ‘I felt that this person doesn't respect you...'
Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah has never shied away from speaking his mind, even if it means being critical of his colleagues. Years ago, he made remarks about Farhan Akhtar 's acting and films that sparked debate among cinephiles. Now, Farhan has addressed those comments, explaining why he chose not to reach out to Naseeruddin afterwards. 'Feedback should come with love and respect' In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Farhan Akhtar was asked if he ever reached out to Naseeruddin after hearing his views on his work. The actor-director replied, 'I have been doing films for 25 years. There are certain actors, directors, writers who I have known and they have debuted maybe 10 years after me. If there is something in their work that I feel, from my observation, that this could be better or that I have this piece of advice to give them. .. genuinely I would pick up the phone and call them. Or sit down and have a conversation with a person I care about in a sensitive way because you are going into somebody's creative process and giving them constructive feedback from your point of view.' Farhan added that he did not feel Naseeruddin's comments came from such a place. 'It has to be done with a certain degree of love and a certain degree of respect for the other person. I felt that it didn't come from that place. I just felt it was just like a statement thrown out publicly. I felt that then this person doesn't respect you... so why should I reach out to a person who doesn't respect me?' 'He could have spoken to me directly' The Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara star further said that if Naseeruddin genuinely had an issue with his acting, he could have chosen a more personal way of expressing it. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Refrigerators 2025 - Click Here To See Prices! Coolie Day 3 India Box Office Estimates: Rajinikanth crime-drama looks to do an excellent Rs 48 crore gross on 1st Saturday BUT...
Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and starring Rajinikanth had yet another excellent day at the India box office, grossing Rs 47-48 crore. These are excellent numbers but the trend is slightly worrisome. The movie opened to collections of Rs 75.50 crore, added Rs 63.50 crore on day 2 (Independence Day holiday) and is likely putting up Rs 47.50 crore on day 3, taking the 3 day cume to Rs 186.50 crore. Going by how it is doing, the Sunday collections are going to drop down to around Rs 40 crore, giving the movie a weekend of a little over Rs 225 crore. The Day Wise India Gross Collections Of Coolie Are As Under Day India Gross Collections 1 Rs 75.50 crore 2 Rs 63.50 crore 3 Rs 47.50 crore Total Rs 186.50 crore Coolie's Rs 47.50 Crore Day 3 Is Excellent But Given How It Started, The Numbers Should Have Been Closer To Rs 60 Crore If the Saturday numbers of Coolie are seen, not taking into consideration the fact that it opened to the numbers it did, they are excellent and not many Tamil movies have really been able to manage it. The collections for the Tamil version of Coolie are on a steep fall. It is the Hindi and Telugu version collections that are sustaining to a degree. After Sunday, it is likely that the drops will be significant even for the Hindi and Telugu version. Regardless, the movie has already punched above its weight for these two versions. The underperformance in the home market will end up being the most talked thing about this Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial. If the trend is to be analysed, it will end up doing lower than what Ajith Kumar's Good Bad Ugly did in Tamil Nadu. Coolie Heads For A Rs 500 Crore Range Worldwide Finish Unless Something Surprising Happens Coolie heads for a near Rs 500 crore global finish, but even that is subject to how it holds. The global weekend of Coolie will be around Rs 375 crore and for it to add less than Rs 125 crore after that will not be seen well. All things said, Coolie will still be among the top 5 highest Kollywood grosser worldwide and that just proves how big Rajinikanth continues to be. He will have 3 films in the top 5 list and what's important to note is that it is with 3 different directors. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.
