Braff added that the event benefited the Midnight Mission, a homeless shelter in Southern California.
"I'm so happy this worked out, it's incredible," he said.
The event featured several artists including The Shins, Iron & WIne, Frou Frou, Colin Hay, Thievery Corporation, Remy Zero, Cary Brothers, Bonnie Somerville and Zero 7 collaborator Sophie Barker, all of whom performed songs from the "Garden State" soundtrack.
During the event, Braff introduced Portman to the stage and she said, "You think I was gonna miss this special night? No way."
"Garden State," which is based on Braff's own experiences, follows a TV actor named Andrew Largeman (Braff) who returns to his small hometown in New Jersey to attend his mother's funeral, according to a synopsis.
"There he is confronted by various aspects of the life he left behind, including his overbearing father (Ian Holm)," the synopsis continues. "Largeman also meets compulsive liar and amateur musician Sam (Portman), with whom he feels an immediate connection. Together with several other figures from his past, Largeman heals old wounds and forges new friendships."
'Scrubs' reboot from creator Bill Lawrence is in development
The film's soundtrack won a Grammy in 2005 for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.
Braff also won a Film Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature in 2004.

Kelly Clarkson tears up performing 'Piece by Piece' with lyric change 12 days before Brandon Blackstock's death
Blackstock died Aug. 7 from cancer. Kelly Clarkson performed an emotionally charged rendition of "Piece by Piece" not long before the death of Brandon Blackstock, her ex-husband and father of her two children. Blackstock, a former talent manager, died Aug. 7 at 48 following a three-year battle with cancer. Clarkson kept the family matter private, but a resurfaced clip from the July 26 show of the Grammy winner's now-postponed Las Vegas residency appears to allude to the tolls of the diagnosis. Clarkson broke down in tears before a performance of "Piece by Piece," the 2015 ballad about Blackstock released two years into their marriage. The song reads as a letter to her estranged father and dives into how Blackstock "restored [her] faith" that "a man can be kind and a father could stay," per the original lyrics. 'I've never rewritten a song more and I probably never will,' Clarkson told the audience before the latest rendition. 'I wrote this song with a lot of hope and projection for happiness and better than what was happening. And then, well, life set in, and I had to change the lyrics. Everybody was like, 'Wait, why aren't you singing this song?' And I was like, 'Have you heard the lyrics?'" Clarkson first changed the lyrics in 2023, a year after her divorce from Blackstock was finalized. "We did it one time, I did a residency here, and then I was like, 'You know what, that sounded a little angry,'" she relationship with the lyrics and its many iterations, Clarkson explained, has since changed. "I just wanted to explain how it feels now. I'm 43. I've done some therapy, and I changed the lyrics now and I think it's perfect. I promise I'm not gonna change it again. Screw it, let's just sing it." Clarkson separated from Blackstock in 2020 after nearly seven years of marriage. The most updated version of the ballad features the new addition: 'I'm learning every day how to love me / I let go of the shame that you taught me / piece by piece I restored the faith / that a heart can still beat even if it breaks.' The singer-songwriter postponed the remainder of her Vegas residency last week, sharing in a statement on Aug. 6 that Blackstock had been ill and that she needed to be present for their children, daughter River Rose, 11, and son Remington Alexander, 9. The dates were moved to late July 2026. "I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows, and I so appreciate your grace, kindness, and understanding,' Clarkson said. Chance The Rapper announces ‘And We Back Tour,' NYC show. Get tickets
Vivid Seats is the New York Post's official ticketing partner. We may receive revenue from this partnership for sharing this content and/or when you make a purchase. Featured pricing is subject to change. Chance The Rapper isn't leaving the possibility that audiences miss the release of his new album to chance this year. The three-time Grammy winner announced he's striking out on his 'And We Back Tour' in support of the forthcoming 'Star Line,' which is due out Friday, Aug. 15. While out and about, the 'Holy' Hip-Hop icon is slated to perform at theaters, music centers, rooftops, pavilions, auditoriums and resorts all over North America from late September through mid-October. That includes a stop at New York City's Rooftop at Pier 17 on Thursday, Oct. 2. 'How about a quick tour for my closest fans?' he shared on Instagram. Surprisingly, this run is the 32-year-old's first official nationwide trek since 2017's 'Be Encouraged Tour.' Over the past eight years, he's lent his talents to numerous festivals, taken off on mini-treks — like his cancelled 2019 'Big Tour' that concluded after just five shows — and headlined huge one-off gigs in his Chicago hometown but none of these outings have sent him all over the country. Prior to the release of 'Star Line,' his second studio album, Chance The Rapper (whose real name is Chancelor Johnathan Bennett) dropped the laid-back lead single 'Tree' on July 3 after debuting the track at Bridgeview, IL's Lyrical Lemonade Smash on June 22. He has since taken the bop to the stage at Chicago's Soldier Field and Lollapalooza. In regards to the record as a whole, Bennett said 'Star Line' features sounds that even 'if they're not super experimental [are] based in some of the Black music that was influential to me throughout my childhood or through my travels,' according to an interview with Rolling Stone. Want to be there? Fans can purchase tickets for all upcoming Chance The Rapper shows on sites like Vivid Seats; the official on-sale for the 'And We Back Tour' is Friday, Aug. 15. Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand. They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event. 'Sunday Candy' (Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment cover) 10.) 'The Highs & The Lows' 11.) 'Tree' 12.) 'Same Drugs' Chance The Rapper new music As noted above, Chance The Rapper dropped his lead single 'Tree' on July 3. The 4.5-minute track starts slowly before a trademark Chance yelp gets the ball rolling. From there, the vocally-gifted rapper spits clever, incisive rhymes about ganja from his mom's perspective like 'she told me 'son, don't worry, don't you have no shame/There's gonna be frustration in this white man's game/And they're gonna have us tied up once it's legalized/Because it is a tree.' Later, he hands over the baton to Lil Wayne for an equally adventurous verse celebrating lighting up. In short, the upbeat single is somehow both a good time and cautionary tale. If you'd like to hear for yourself, you can find 'Tree' here. '90s sitcom star threatened with fat jokes if she didn't lose weight for hit show, she says
Kim Coles, best known for her role on 'Living Single,' recently revealed writers pressured her to lose weight during the show's run. Coles, 63, opened up about the situation on a recent episode of the 'ReLiving Single' podcast with former co-star Erika Alexander. 'I would get a call at the beginning of every season to my manager saying, 'Kim Coles has to lose some weight. She has to lose some weight. She has to lose some weight,'' Coles said in the Wednesday episode. The actress recounted an instance where show executives threatened they'd start writing fat jokes into the hit show's script if Coles didn't lose weight. 'You won't remember this, but I told you that they threatened me and said, 'If you keep gaining weight, we're going to have to start writing fat jokes.' And you said, 'I won't read those jokes,'' Coles said to Alexander. The two actresses recalled a weight joke being written into a season one episode and said co-star Queen Latifah made it clear to show runners and cast members that the fat jokes trend would not continue in later seasons. 'Living Single' ran for five season from 1993 to 1998 on FOX. The show was centered around six 20-somethings living in a Brooklyn brownstone.
