‘Garden State' Soundtrack Comes To Life In Anniversary Concert

The best soundtracks define an era and a scene. Of course, the '70s disco era will forever be associated with the timeless Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. In the '80s the soundtrack was Purple Rain. The '90s grunge era was earmarked by the soundtrack to Singles. And the 2000s indie scene belongs to the Garden State soundtrack. Scrubs star Zach Braff's 2004 directorial debut, starring Braff, Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard, Ian Holm and Method Man, became a surprise box-office hit thanks, in part, to the Grammy-winning soundtrack. Braff, who hand-picked every song painstakingly carefully as he told me in a 2004 interview when the film was released, also expertly wove the soundtrack into the film. Who can forget the iconic moment in the movie when Portman made everyone in the world fall in love with The Shins by looking directly at Braff and saying, 'You have to hear this song, it will change your life.' Last Saturday, March 29, the soundtrack was brought to life at L.A.'s Greek Theatre in a special twentieth anniversary benefit concert for the Midnight Mission, a homeless shelter and resources provider in Los Angeles since 1914. Almost all of the original artists – including The Shins, Iron & Wine, Cary Brothers, Thievery Corporation, Remy Zero and more – were on hand, as well as a few surprise guests. Grammy winner Laufey filled in for Coldplay on their 'Don't Panic,' Milk Carton Kids covered Simon & Garfunkel's 'The Only Living Boy in New York' and Madison Cunningham joined Iron & Wine on Nick Drake's 'One of These Things First.' Also on hand was Colin Hay, a frequent guest on Scrubs. The night ended with an all-star tribute to Tom Petty, an excellent choice, for his work with the Midnight Mission. For those who didn't get to see the once-in-a-lifetime show, which featured appearances by Braff, Portman, Sarah Paulson, Danny Devito and more, the show will air tonight on Veeps Garden State - Garden State: The 20th Anniversary Concert - VEEPS.

See Zach Braff and Natalie Portman reunite 20 years after 'Garden State'

Zach Braff and Natalie Portman had a surprise "Garden State" reunion over the weekend. The duo, which helmed the 2004 film together, took the stage at a "Garden State" 20th anniversary concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. "I'm so happy to be here with Zach Braff, the creator, writer, director, actor of 'Garden State' at the 20th anniversary concert of 'Garden State,'" Portman said in a video with Braff, which she shared on her Instagram story. Natalie Portman shares photo from the moment she met Rihanna: 'Still not over this' Braff added that the event benefited the Midnight Mission, a homeless shelter in Southern California. "I'm so happy this worked out, it's incredible," he said. The event featured several artists including The Shins, Iron & WIne, Frou Frou, Colin Hay, Thievery Corporation, Remy Zero, Cary Brothers, Bonnie Somerville and Zero 7 collaborator Sophie Barker, all of whom performed songs from the "Garden State" soundtrack. During the event, Braff introduced Portman to the stage and she said, "You think I was gonna miss this special night? No way." "Garden State," which is based on Braff's own experiences, follows a TV actor named Andrew Largeman (Braff) who returns to his small hometown in New Jersey to attend his mother's funeral, according to a synopsis. "There he is confronted by various aspects of the life he left behind, including his overbearing father (Ian Holm)," the synopsis continues. "Largeman also meets compulsive liar and amateur musician Sam (Portman), with whom he feels an immediate connection. Together with several other figures from his past, Largeman heals old wounds and forges new friendships." 'Scrubs' reboot from creator Bill Lawrence is in development The film's soundtrack won a Grammy in 2005 for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. Braff also won a Film Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature in 2004. See Zach Braff and Natalie Portman reunite 20 years after 'Garden State' originally appeared on

Frou Frou, Remy Zero Reunite For Los Angeles ‘Garden State' Anniversary Concert

More than 20 years since it became required listening for any mid-aughts music fan, the artists featured on the soundtrack to acclaimed indie film Garden State have come together in Los Angeles for a one-night only affair. Initially released in July 2004, Garden State served as the directorial debut for Scrubs star Zach Braff, and earned itself a nomination for the grand jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Though it avoided much of the Hollywood glitz and glamor, the film developed a cult following, thanks in part to its eclectic soundtrack. Ultimately, the soundtrack peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 and won the 2005 Grammy for best compilation soundtrack for visual media. In October 2024, it was announced a special concert celebration would take place at Los Angeles' Greek Theater on March 29, with proceeds from the affair going to benefit The Midnight Mission, a homeless shelter and services provider founded in L.A. in 1914. Promotion for the event promised appearances from (almost) every artist featured on the soundtrack, along with 'very special guests' by way of cast member appearances, and on Saturday (March 29), the full anniversary concert came to fruition. Artists such as The Shins were on hand to perform the likes of 'Caring is Creepy' and 'New Slang' (which attained widespread fame thanks to Natalie Portman's character insisting the song will 'change your life; I swear'), while Cary Brothers, Bonnie Somerville, Colin Hay, Thievery Corporation, Cary Brothers, and Sophie Barker of Zero 7 also appeared to perform their respective cuts. A handful of notable absences did alter the dream lineup, however. While pop heavyweights Coldplay weren't on hand to perform 'Don't Panic,' neither were Simon & Garfunkel available to run through 'The Only Living Boy in New York.' In their absence, Laufey and The Milk Carton Kids got up onstage to cover their songs, respectively. Likewise, Iron & Wine paid tribute to the late Nick Drake by adding a rendition of 'One of These Things First' to his scheduled performance. The event also resulted in a couple of rare performances from the likes of Frou Frou and Remy Zero. While Imogen Heap and Guy Sigsworth of Frou Frou have been active again since 2017, the pair had not performed live since 2019, with the Garden State concert seeing them appear onstage once again. Remy Zero, meanwhile, broke up in 2010 and reformed exclusively for the Saturday concert. The band largely reunited to play their 1998 track 'Fair,' though they also used the opportunity to provide fans with a chance to hear the track 'Save Me,' which found fame as the theme to Smallville from 2001 to 2011. On the non-musical front, the event also featured appearances from both Braff and Portman, while Danny DeVito (an executive producer on the original film), and Braff's former Scrubs co-stars Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke took to the stage to partake in the festivities and the fundraising efforts. For those that missed out on the event, the concert will be available to purchase for streaming from April 6. Proceeds from the stream will also be donated to The Midnight Mission.
