PPP demands IRSA chairman's resignation over 'water theft'
He contended that both the Taunsa and Chashma-Jhelum link canals are flood canals, meant to carry water only during the flood season - unlike the prevailing spell of drought. "The IRSA chairman should accept his failure to close these canals, which are operating unlawfully, and tender his resignation," he said.
Khuhro argued that the authority has failed to implement the 1991 Water Accord in letter and spirit - stopping the theft of river water and ensuring Sindh receives its rightful share.

Sindh PA pays tribute to the nation's founders in I-Day session
The Sindh Assembly on Wednesday commemorated the 78th Independence Day and Marka-e-Haq with a special symbolic session, attended by provincial lawmakers and specially-abled children, during which an unanimous resolution paid glowing tributes to the founders of Pakistan, the armed forces, and the country's diplomatic achievements. The sitting, presided over by Speaker Owais Qadir Shah, was held in the historic old assembly hall where Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah had delivered his maiden address to the Constituent Assembly. Provincial ministers Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, Saeed Ghani, and members from all parliamentary parties participated in the proceedings. A specially-abled youth, Abid, presented the resolution in Braille, acknowledging the sacrifices made for Pakistan's creation, lauding the role of the armed forces, and commending PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari for enhancing Pakistan's stature through successful diplomatic initiatives. The resolution pledged that persons with special needs would remain active contributors to the nation's development and urged the youth to remain united in the service of the motherland. In a symbolic gesture, MPAs and specially-abled students read excerpts from Quaid-i-Azam's historic speech, while two young girls rendered selected portions in sign language. Another specially-abled participant, Tauseef, recalled the night of May 7, when the PAF, under Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, shot down six Indian fighter aircraft within minutes, while the army stood steadfast on the Line of Control. He termed it the night of "Marka-e-Haq," representing the nation's unyielding resolve. Welcoming the children to the assembly, Speaker reminded the gathering that Quaid-i-Azam and Liaquat Ali Khan had once sat in the same hall to raise the national flag and formally commence Pakistan's journey. He extended Independence Day greetings, offered prayers for the martyrs and armed forces, and lauded the sacrifices that led to the country's creation. The event also featured a flag-hoisting ceremony, the cutting of an Independence Day cake, and symbolic seating of specially-abled children on lawmakers' benches.

Independence Day: JI Karachi urges nation to renew its commitment
KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chief Monem Zafar Khan has urged the nation to renew its commitment on Independence Day to building Pakistan on the foundation of Kalema-e-Taiba. He made the appeal on Wednesday while inaugurating Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan Park and a newly paved street in Union Council 4 of Nazimabad Town. Earlier, he hoisted the national flag at Hyderi Market alongside members of the market committee and later opened a section of Altaf Ali Barelvi Road and the Dr Pervez Mahmood Green Belt in Liaquatabad. Addressing the gathering in Nazimabad, Monem Zafar Khan stressed the role of education in national progress, citing the JI's Bano Qabil programme, which has trained over 50,000 students despite limited resources. He said the party had restored 72 parks in Karachi over the past two years, including 42 in Nazimabad Town, and renovated 45 government schools, resulting in higher student enrolment. He pointed out that Karachi contributed Rs3,256 billion in taxes to the federal exchequer this year and accounted for 95 percent of Sindh's budget, yet remained plagued by civic problems. He blamed the Pakistan Peoples Party, which has governed the city for 17 years, and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement for neglecting Karachi's development, saying no ruling party had genuinely worked for the city, treating it instead as a source of revenue.
