Margaret Cho Says Ellen DeGeneres Was ‘Really Weird and Not Nice' to Her

Yahoo5 hours ago

Margaret Cho described her strained relationship with Ellen DeGeneres during an appearance on a new episode of The Kelly Mantle Show. The comedian said DeGeneres always treated her like a stranger when she came on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, despite the fact that they had been around each other for years.
'Ellen was really weird and not nice to me for most of my career,' Cho said on the show. 'I opened for her in the 1980s, when she was a headliner in comedy clubs. Later, when I would do her talk show in the 2000s, she would act like we just met.'

She added, 'And I'm like, 'Bitch, what?' That's weird. We go way back. It's so creepy and weird.'
Cho recalled a specific incident that stuck out to her as especially odd. David Bowie appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show the day after one of his concerts, at which Cho dressed up in an elaborate 'Chinese emperor outfit.' Bowie complimented the costume to DeGeneres, but the remark was edited out of the final broadcast.
'The producer, who's a really good friend of mine, had to call me and tell me, 'I can't believe she did this, but she cut it out of the show,'' Cho explained. ''But you need to know that he was going on and on about your outfit. God said your name. He loves you.'' She admitted she wasn't sure if it was actually a vindictive move, but added, 'Still, I'm going to take it personally.'
DeGeneres' image took a hit in 2020 following a series of reports by BuzzFeed News in which employees at her show alleged racism, sexual misconduct, and intimidation at the hands of executive producers. Three producers were fired because of it, and DeGeneres issued an on-air apology. In 2022, singer Greyson Chance, whom DeGeneres signed to her label, told Rolling Stone he had 'never met someone more manipulative, more self-centered, and more blatantly opportunistic.' The Ellen DeGeneres Show ultimately ended in 2022 after 19 seasons.
The host has since addressed the controversy on tour and in a stand-up special, Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, which aired on Netflix. 'The Be Kind Girl wasn't kind — that was the headline,' DeGeneres said in the special. 'Here's the problem, I'm a comedian who got a talk show, and I ended the show every day by saying, 'Be kind to one another.' Had I ended my show by saying, 'Go fuck yourselves,' people would've been pleasantly surprised to find out I'm kind.'

Princess Lilibet makes adorable cameo in Duchess Meghan's As Ever teaser: Watch

Duchess Meghan is making her business a family affair. The British American royal and entrepreneur, 43, shared a behind-the-scenes teaser for her As Ever lifestyle brand, which launched in April to fan acclaim, in an Instagram post June 23. The clip featured an adorable appearance from the Duchess of Sussex's daughter, 4-year-old Princess Lilibet. The brief montage showed close-up shots of various fruits (some of As Ever's products have included raspberry and apricot spreads), as well as a shot of Meghan writing down a motivational quote: "Note to self: Let's do something extraordinary today!" The first As Ever drop sold out in under an hour and one product — the limited-edition wildflower honey with honeycomb for $28 — had fans buzzing, selling out in less than five minutes. The featured products in the company's first collection included $12 herbal tea in three flavors: hibiscus, peppermint and lemon ginger. As Ever is produced alongside Netflix, which also distributes Meghan's lifestyle show "With Love, Meghan." The series premiered in March and was quickly renewed for a second season. ‘Squid Game' Emmy predictions: Netflix's most popular drama still in play for these categories

When it comes to the 2025 Emmys, it's not yet game over. The Netflix thriller Squid Game made a major splash at the 2022 ceremony, earning 14 nominations for its first season, including Best Drama Series. The show brought home six awards that year: Best Actor for Lee Jung-jae, Best Directing ('Red Light, Green Light'), Best Drama Guest Actress for Lee Yoo-mi, Best Production Design ('Kkanbu'), Best Stunt Performance ('Stick to the Team'), and Best Visual Effects ('VIPs'). Three years later, Squid Game's second season continued to captivate audiences, logging over 192 million views on Netflix — behind only the show's record-breaking first season in 2021 (265 million) and the first season of Wednesday in 2022 (252 million). More from GoldDerby Rashida Jones raises the bar in 'Black Mirror' - and deserves an Emmy nomination for it Why 'Elio' sank at the box office - and why it could take a cue from 'Elemental' and rise again Inside the music scene at 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon': From breakout discoveries to global superstars According to Gold Derby's latest odds, Squid Game is unlikely to match its impressive 14 nominations from Season 1. But are we underestimating this beloved series as it gears up to premiere its third and final season on June 27? With eight slots available for Best Drama, Squid Game is barely holding onto the eighth position. Clear front-runners include Severance, The Pitt, The White Lotus, and The Last of Us, followed by strong contenders Slow Horses, Andor, and The Diplomat. Squid Game is now locked in a tight race for the final spot, facing stiff competition from newcomer Paradise and former nominee The Handmaid's Tale. While the second season of Squid Game wasn't as critically acclaimed as the first — scoring 83 percent on Rotten Tomatoes compared to 95 percent for Season 1 — it remains undeniably one of the most-watched and talked-about shows of this television season. Netflix "I wanted to create a show that was entertaining to watch, that people could enjoy," creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Gold Derby. "After you enjoy watching the show, I wanted the show to give audiences some food for thought — maybe some conversation starters after watching it together with people that are close to [them]. Maybe you could talk about some of the themes that are explored in the show. I thought that that would be a nice bonus." Three years ago, Lee Jung-jae made history as the first Asian man to win Best Drama Actor and the first to win for a non-English show. Could he really go from winning to falling completely off the ballot for Season 2? That's what our Best Drama Actor odds suggest. He's currently ranked 10th, and his chances aren't helped by the fact that the category will be limited to just five nominees this year. The last actor to go from winning to not receiving a nomination was 2016 champ Rami Malek for Mr. Robot. Will The White Lotus dominate the Drama Supporting Actress category again, as it did two years ago when it claimed five of the eight slots? It's certainly possible, and with only seven slots available this year, the competition is tougher than ever — bad news for anyone trying to break through. While other shows will certainly be represented in this category, it seems like an unlikely spot for Squid Game to make its mark. Currently, Kang Ae-shim, for her role as protective mother Jang Geum-ja (Player 149), and Park Gyu-young as Kang No-eul, the determined North Korean defector fighting to save her daughter, are ranked 19th and 20th, respectively. Netflix Choi Seung-hyun (aka T.O.P.) is ranked ninth for Best Drama Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Thanos (Player 230), a rapper who joined Squid Game after incurring debts due to a failed cryptocurrency investment. "While he is a villain, he's not like a very villainous villain, but I think he's more of a loser guy," the actor told Gold Derby. "He's got a few screws loose, and he's a little bit clumsy. I think that's what makes him a little bit adorable to people." Although this category looks poised to be dominated by names from The White Lotus and Severance, Squid Game is certainly still in the mix in this seven-person field. Also in contention are Season 1 survivor Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man, currently ranked 14th, and Park Sung-hoon as heroic trans ex-soldier Hyun-ju (Player 120) in 16th place. SEE The Guest Drama Actor category seems like an open race, with six nominees making the final ballot and no clear front-runner dominating the conversation. Sitting in eighth place is Gong Yoo, who reprises his role as the Recruiter in a showcase episode this season. In "Bread and Lottery," Recruiter tempts the unhoused and impoverished with a choice between bread or a lottery ticket. He later comes face to face with Gi-hun and proposes an irresistible deal, leading to a deadly game of Russian roulette. SEE Squid Game played it smart by submitting just one episode, "Bread and Lottery," for writing, penned by creator and showrunner Hwang. In "Bread and Water," a vengeful Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jai) makes a U-turn at the airport. Later, in his hideout, he intensifies his search for the elusive Recruiter (Gong Yoo), who is seeking new players. Hwang earned an Emmy nomination in 2022 for writing "One Lucky Day," so he might be feeling lucky again this year. Tough competition will come from last year's winner, Slow Horses, which submitted Will Smith's Season 4 finale, "Hello Goodbye." Also in contention for the six slots in this category are three episodes from The Pitt ("7:00 A.M.," "10:00 A.M.," and "2:00 P.M."), the Season 2 finale of Severance ("Cold Harbor"), one episode of The White Lotus ("Full Moon Party"), and "Through the Valley" from The Last of Us. As with writing, Squid Game has submitted a single episode for Best Drama Directing in Season 2. Since Hwang wrote and directed every episode, the Netflix series benefits from being able to select its strongest submission without risking internal competition among contenders. This year, Hwang opted for "O X" as his directing submission, an episode in which Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) and his team prepare to infiltrate a suspicious island. As tensions and monetary stakes continue to escalate, players are forced to split into two opposing factions, pushing the survival drama to new heights. Hwang previously won this category in 2022 for directing the iconic "Red Light, Green Light" episode. Among the top contenders competing for one of the seven directing slots this year are three episodes from The Pitt, three from Severance, one from The White Lotus, and one from Slow Horses. Netflix There are plenty more categories in play for Squid Game, even if it's considered a dark horse in most of the above-the-line races this year. As mentioned earlier, the crafts-heavy series previously won Emmys for production design, stunts, and visual effects three years ago — making it a strong contender in each of those categories once again. Additionally, Squid Game was a prior nominee for both editing and cinematography, areas where it continues to showcase strength this year. The series was also submitted for costumes, makeup/hairstyling, original dramatic score, and sound. Rashida Jones raises the bar in ‘Black Mirror' — and deserves an Emmy nomination for it

Rashida Jones is known as a powerhouse creator in the Hollywood industry. She has acted in several iconic, Emmy-nominated series and projects, including The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Silo. This Emmy season, she wowed audiences with one of the best performances of her career in the science-fiction anthology series Black Mirror. Jones played a lead in the episode 'Common People'; however, her acting in this role is anything but ordinary. Despite this impressive body of work, Jones has never won an Emmy and has only received one nomination for producing the Netflix documentary Hot Girls Wanted in 2015. However, as a creator, Jones has reached some impressive heights. In 2018, the documentary about her father, iconic music producer Quincy Jones, titled Quincy, which she codirected with Alan Hicks, won a Grammy for Best Music Film. In 2024, her short documentary Swim Lesson was shortlisted for the Oscars. More from GoldDerby Why 'Elio' sank at the box office - and why it could take a cue from 'Elemental' and rise again Inside the music scene at 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon': From breakout discoveries to global superstars 'The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon' unveils Season 3 trailer, premiere date, and more of today's top stories Jones's connection to Black Mirror goes back to 2016, when she cowrote the third season's first episode 'Nosedive' with her long-time friend and collaborator Michael Schur (Parks and Recreation, The Good Place). The episode delved into society's obsession with social media ratings, and many critics still regard it as one of the best in the series. This time, Jones returned to the Black Mirror universe as an actor, taking on one of the most complex roles of her career. Tyler Boye/WWD The seventh season's first episode, "Common People,' directed by Ally Pankiw, received a warm reception from critics and audiences. It tells the story of a married couple, Mike (Chris O'Dowd) and Amanda (Jones), who become involved in a new subscription-based service called Rivermind. This startup promises to give Amanda a second chance at life after an inoperable brain tumor diagnosis. But if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The couple's quality of life becomes solely dependent on the superiority of their tier plan. Throughout the episode, Jones skillfully navigates the multiple dimensions of her character, portraying a loving wife, an advertisement vessel, a user addicted to the Lux drug, and a dying woman facing her inevitable fate. On top of Jones's great performance, Black Mirror's significant impact on modern culture increases her chances for acknowledgment among the voters. The show won three consecutive Emmys in the Outstanding Television Movie category in 2017, 2018, and 2019 for "San Junipero", "USS Callister", and 'Bandersnatch' respectively. Back then, creators were allowed to submit individual episodes as TV movies for voting. However, after 2021, the eligibility rules for the TV Movie/ Limited Series category started to require a submitted piece of work to have a minimum 75-minute run. After the change, the show has been struggling to gain the same acclaim. However, season seven received praise for its significant improvement over previous ones. The series is currently ranked seventh in the Gold Derby odds, with four experts predicting a nomination. This year's Movie/Limited Series Actress category is highly competitive, with only five nomination slots available. Cristin Milioti is leading the race for her career-defining role in The Penguin, per the Gold Derby odds. Michelle Williams is also a strong contender for her vulnerable performance in Dying for Sex. The Oscar winners Cate Blanchett (Disclaimer) and Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy) hold third and fourth place, respectively. The fifth slot currently belongs to Kaitlyn Dever, who portrays a real-life influencer who lied about her cancer diagnosis in Apple Cider Vinegar. Then again, nothing is really settled until the voting ends. Ellen Pompeo (Good American Family), Lola Petticrew (Say Nothing), Ari Graynor (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), and Amanda Seyfried (Long Bright River) will make it a tight race. Jones is currently occupying the 10th spot in our combined odds. The ambiguity in the category's final lineup and Black Mirror's nomination prospects give the actress a chance to make the top five on July 15.
