39 days until the Texans' 2025 season opener: Who has worn No.39?

USA Today2 days ago
The Houston Texans are less than 40 days away from kicking off the 2025 season in Los Angeles against the Rams at SoFi Stadium and we're counting down the days until a victory ensues on the West Coast.
Texans Wire will daily inform you which player has worn the number of the day leading up to kickoff and select the player who best represented the number during their time at NRG Stadium. As for today, let's take a look at who has worn No. 39 since the inaugural season in 2002.
Texans players to wear No. 39
No. 39 currently belongs to third-year linebacker Herny To'oTo'o. As a rookie out of Alabama, To'oTo'o served as the No. 3 backer behind Christian Harris and Blake Cashman while being a stable option on special teams. Last season, Harris missed a majority of camp with a calf injury, leading to To'oTo'o having an expanded role.
After a breakout sophomore campaign, the job is To'oTo'o's to lose. He led the Texans in tackles last with 105 stops and finished fourth in tackles for loss with eight. Throughout training camp, he's been the anchor on the weakside opposite Azeez Al-Shaair and should be considered the favorite to lock down the starting job with Harris missing more time.
Best Player: Henry To'oTo'o
Even though he's only been here two years, To'oTo'o already has the most tackles from anyone who wore the No. 39. Ballentine deserves some credit, but he switched over to No. 27 after the 2009 campaign, so he only wore the jersey when he served as a reserve option.
If To'oTo'o has another promising season, the Texans could elect to lock him up on a team-friendly but stable deal to keep him in Houston long-term. He's one of a handful of names worthy of discussing a new contract with and could be an option that signs on the dotted line next offseason ahead of a contract year.

Nate Landman shaping up to be Rams' latest quality find at inside linebacker

LOS ANGELES — Nate Landman is shaping up to be exactly what the Los Angeles Rams want at inside linebacker. He has settled in well as an effective communicator and good teammate and looks like a steady contributor on the field. The 26-year-old Landman has been one of the standouts of training camp for the Rams after signing a one-year contract for the veteran minimum salary in March, the kind of cost-effective find at the position that has become something of a trademark during Sean McVay's head coaching tenure in Los Angeles.

Arion Carter's leadership with Tennessee football detailed

No. 18 Tennessee kicked off fall training camp on July 30. Rankings reflect the US LBM Coaches Poll. Following the Vols' third practice on Aug. 2, linebackers coach William Inge discussed Arion Carter entering his third season at Tennessee in 2025. 'I think that what you see, he's been probably consistent,' Inge said. 'It's still been the same scenario. When you come here in the morning, he'll be the first one here, you come here at night, he'll be the last one leaving, and now, I think from a leadership standpoint, what he's done has really turned into the player-led organization part of the program where he's making sure the rest of the guys are doing some of those same things. 'It's not just him dealing with the linebackers, but him also dealing with the secondary, the d-line, the o-line and just his communication that he has around the guys on the team. That's what you want when you take the next step in leadership. He's also doing the same thing. We talk all the time where, in order for you to be a dominant linebacker or dominant player that is known, it is about leadership and production, and he is producing on the field as well.' The 6-foot-1, 235-pound junior linebacker appeared in 21 games for the Vols from 2023-24. Carter totaled 85 tackles, including 37 solo and 48 assists, 7.5 tackles for a loss, one interception and eight pass deflections. As Houston aims to push deeper into the postseason in 2025, here's a complete look at the Texans' 2025 preseason schedule, including dates, times and TV channels. Houston Texans 2025 Preseason Schedule Check out the team's preseason schedule below: Jalen Hurts ranked ninth in NFL's Top 10 QB list behind Justin Herbert and Jayden Daniels | The Facility James Jones explains why it is "awful" to rank Jalen Hurts the ninth-best QB in the NFL behind Justin Herbert and Jayden Daniels. How will the Texans do this season? Ben Arthur predicts that the Texans will finish the year at 9-8. Here's Arthur: "The Texans' Super Bowl-caliber defense has gotten even better this offseason with the addition of former Eagle C.J. Gardner-Johnson , who had six interceptions last season. But Houston's offense is still filled with question marks. Its revamped offensive line looks underwhelming on paper, and, outside of Nico Collins , quarterback C.J. Stroud is expected to lean heavily on rookie receivers. That could mean some tough sledding with a first-place schedule, against opponents like the Bills and Bucs at home and the Chiefs, Rams and Ravens on the road. The Texans should be the team to beat in the AFC South once again, but they remain a step below true contention in the conference." share Get more from the National Football League Follow your favorites to get information about games, news and more
