Are Chinese Spies Hiding In UK Universities? Students Allegedly Forced To Spy, Says Report
According to news agency ANI, a report cited by Breitbart London stated that British universities are being 'infiltrated by Chinese students' who allegedly acted as spies for the CCP. UKCT's investigation surveyed academics in Chinese studies programmes across Britain.
UKCT singled out the support networks for Chinese students, Chinese Students and Scholars Associations (CSSAs), for Chinese students, but have been repeatedly accused of acting as extensions of the CCP.
According to Breitbart London, one British academic described CSSAs as "the primary source of student spies on campus," noting their "constant connections with local consulates."
Meanwhile, a scholar informed UKCT that Chinese students admitted that "surveillance is omnipresent" and that several students are questioned by authorities in China upon returning.
On the other hand, one academic told UKCT that university management blocked them from pursuing politically sensitive research, warning it could jeopardise funding due to the reliance on tuition fees from Chinese students, which is often subsidised by CCP scholarships.
It is also alleged in the report that Chinese diplomats and CCP-linked operatives have interfered with UK-based Chinese students. Furthermore, they have even influenced China-related academic programmes.
Breitbart London reported that in certain cases, universities have also allegedly closed down research projects following pressure from the Chinese government directly.
Why Surveillance in UK Universities?
The report also warned that such tactics could be designed to shut down debate on issues pertaining to China, including human rights issues in Hong Kong and Tibet, to scrutiny over China's handling of the coronavirus outbreak.
British universities have allegedly also received large sums of money from CCP-linked entities, including the controversial Confucius Institutes. According to Breitbart London, some UK universities have also been accused of collaborating with Chinese researchers on weapons-related projects, prompting MI6 to investigate hundreds of British academics.

Union Cabinet approves 2 semiconductor projects worth Rs 4,009cr for Odisha
Bhubaneswar: Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved two major semiconductor manufacturing units worth Rs 4,009 crore for Odisha. The two projects, to be set up in Bhubaneswar's Info Valley, will generate thousands of high-skilled jobs, catalyse electronics manufacturing and help place Odisha on the global semiconductor map, sources said. The two manufacturing units will be built by SiCSem and 3D Glass. Given the growing demand for semiconductors in telecom, automotive, data centres, consumer electronics and industrial electronics, the newly approved projects will significantly contribute to creating an ' Atmanirbhar Bharat ', official sources said. Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Cabinet's approval, chief minister Mohan Majhi said in an X post, "The recent amendment of the Odisha Semiconductor Manufacturing and Fabless Policy, aimed at enhancing investment viability, competitiveness, and sustainability, together with this significant Cabinet approval, marks a major milestone in the state's industrial and technological advancement. I look forward to continued partnership between the state and central govts to further this strategic initiative for the comprehensive development of Odisha and the nation." SiCSem Pvt Ltd, in collaboration with UK-based Clas-SiC Wafer Fab Ltd, will set up India's first commercial compound semiconductor fabrication facility here. The plant will manufacture silicon carbide (SiC) devices, known for their efficiency in high-power applications, with an annual capacity of 60,000 wafers and 96 million packaged units. The SiC devices will have applications across critical sectors, including missiles, defence equipment, electric vehicles (EVs), railway, fast chargers, data centre racks, consumer appliances and solar power inverters. The facility is expected to give India a strategic edge in producing next-generation power electronics domestically. The second project, by US-headquartered 3D Glass Solutions Inc (3DGS), will introduce the world's most advanced semiconductor packaging technology. The unit will manufacture glass interposers, silicon bridges and 3D heterogeneous integration (3DHI) modules. The component are crucial for miniaturisation, high performance and energy efficiency in electronics. With a planned capacity of about 69,600 glass panel substrates, 50 million assembled units, and 13,200 3DHI modules annually, the facility will cater to applications in defence, high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, RF and automotive electronics, photonics and co-packaged optics. Officials said the two projects will not only bring cutting-edge technology to Odisha but also create a ripple effect in the state's electronics ecosystem, encouraging ancillary industries and boosting technical skill development. Apart from two Odisha projects, the Cabinet also approved one project each for Punjab and Andhra Pradesh under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan hailed the Cabinet's decision to set up the two units in Odisha. He said the decision is a pivotal moment for the state, emphasising its potential to create jobs and generate substantial revenue. Pradhan expressed his gratitude to the PM and highlighted that this move marks a new chapter in the 'Purvodaya' mission. In Bhagalpur's Pirpainti assembly constituency, 120-year-old Asha Devi was found "alive, with wrinkles all over her face" after initial doubts about her age. Deputy election officials ordered a verification, during which BLO Farzana Khatoon checked her Aadhaar card and spoke to villagers. Punjab: YouTuber quizzed by central agencies over 2024 Pak visit
The central intelligence agencies questioned a Jalandhar-based travel vlogger over his alleged visits to Pakistan a few months ago. The travel vlogger had uploaded multiple videos related to his Pakistan visit on his YouTube Channel. (HT File) Amrik Singh, a resident of Turna village in Jalandhar district, was summoned by Jalandhar rural police to visit Lohian police station on Monday evening, where he was questioned for more than 20 hours. He was released on Tuesday evening. Deputy inspector general of police (DIG) Naveen Singla confirmed the development and said, 'The social media influencer was questioned over his visit to Pakistan around eight months back.' Shahkot's deputy superintendent of police, Onkar Singh Brar, said 'central agencies' questioned the YouTuber, and the local police don't have any details about the questioning. 'He has been released. We have informed the village panchayat to take Amrik back from the police station,' he said. Amrik had uploaded multiple videos related to his Pakistan visit on his YouTube Channel. Amrik's wife, Manpreet Kaur, said her husband was summoned in connection with their December 2024 trip to Pakistan during which they filmed videos covering Sikh religious sites and other human interest stories, and uploaded the same on their YouTube channel. 'My husband's phone remained unreachable for nearly a day after he went to the Lohian police station to record his statement,' she said.
