National Film Awards: ‘12th Fail' is best film, Massey-Shah Rukh and Rani win best actor awards
The film's lead actor, Vikrant Massey, shared the best actor award with Shah Rukh Khan, who won for his double role of a father and a son in the action film Jawan. This is Shah Rukh's first National Award in his glittering multi-decade career.
The award for the best actress in a leading role went to Rani Mukerji for her portrayal of a mother fighting for her children in Mrs. Chatterjee V/s Norway. This is the prolific veteran's first National Award as well.
Mukerji, 47, said: ' For me, this award is also a validation of my 30-year body of work, my dedication to my craft with which I feel a deeply spiritual connection…'
The jury, headed by filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, praised Massey's performance as one with 'raw honesty and emotional depth'.
Gowarikar also said Shah Rukh's first national award 'after such a long and prolific career' was 'historic'.
Massey, 38, said it was a dream come true moment for him. 'It is a privilege to be sharing my first National Award with an icon like Shah Rukh Khan,' he said.
While best direction went to The Kerala Story by Sudipto Sen, Karan Johar took home the award for 'best popular film providing wholesome entertainment' for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
Asked about the award for The Kerala Story, which had sparked controversy, Gowarikar said: 'It's a difficult topic, and to convey that with this kind of clarity is something that we as a jury felt was the need to applaud.'
The film also won best choreography for Dhindhora Baje Re, choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant. Meghna Gulzar's Sam Bahadur, a biographical war drama on the life and times of India's first Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, won 'best feature film promoting national, social, and environmental values'.
Shilpa Rao won best female playback singer for Chaliya from Jawan and P V N S Rohit won best male playback singer for Premisthunna from the Telugu film Baby.
Sachin Sudhakaran won best sound design for Animal. The Ranbir Kapoor-starring film shared the award for best music direction (Harshavardhan Rameshwar) with the Tamil film Vaathi (G V Prakash Kumar).
While the Sanya Malhotra-starrer comedy Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery won best feature in Hindi language, the award for best screenplay was shared between Baby (Telugu), Parking (Tamil) and Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai (Hindi).
The Telugu film Hanu-Man, a pan-Indian hit, bagged the awards in the best film in AVGC (animation, visual effects, gaming & comic) and best action direction categories.
The awards for the supporting roles, both actor and actress, were swept by non-Hindi cinema. While the former was shared by Vijayaraghavan for Pookkaalam (Malayalam) and M S Bhaskar for Parking (Tamil), the latter went to both Urvashi for Ullozhukku (Malayalam) and Janki Bodiwala for Vash (Gujarati).
The winners were chosen from a total of 332 feature film entries, 115 non-feature film entries, 27 book entries, and 16 critics' entries.

He looked back at his incredible journey in cinema- from being an outsider, to now becoming one of South India's most celebrated actors and a proud recipient of the Padma Bhushan. In his note, he wrote that he faced numerous challenges and setbacks over the years, yet he always got up and kept moving forward. He thanked fans for standing by him and supporting him even when he doubted himself, and was out of sight. He expressed his gratitude to the directors, producers, writer and actors he worked with, in his 33-year acting journey. Moreover, Ajith Kumar also addressed his critics, and wrote that their harshest words have only sharpened him. 'As I complete 33 years in this extraordinary journey called cinema, I do not pen this to celebrate. I don't wait for landmark numbers as I believe that each passing year is a landmark year. I thank you all with a full heart and folded hands. This journey was never easy. I did not come from legacy or influence. I started from the outside, with nothing more than a will to try. Life, in its own way, tested me over and over through injuries, setbacks, failures, and silence. But I never stopped. I endured. I got back up. And I kept moving forward. Because perseverance is not something I learnt; it's something I lived," he wrote. In his note, he also mentioned his re-entry into the motor racing world. 'In 2025, as I re-entered the motor racing world with Ajith Kumar Racing, it wasn't just a return to the sport. It was a statement to myself and to anyone who ever doubted that age, fear, and obstacles are real, but so is willpower. To all my fans, I am not what I am without you. You've turned admiration into acts of kindness-helping others, standing for what's right, and honoring my name with quiet dignity. I see you. I thank you. I will never take your love for granted, and never will I trade your love for my benefit," wrote Ajith Kumar. 'I thank the president of India Madam Droupadi Murmu, the honourable Prime minister Shri Narendra Modi ji and the government of India for conferring me the prestigious Padma Bhushan award. I am determined enough to offer my best to bring respect to this honour," he further added. Addressing his critics, Ajith Kumar wrote, 'To the critics, even your harshest words sharpened me. To Shalini, my wife, the pillar of my life, you have stood with me through everything. My kids, Anoushka, and Advik who bring meaning to every day-you are my balance and my reason. I am grateful to my father, the late P. S. Mani, and my mother, Mohini Mani, for the upbringing that reflects in every social respect I gain today. I am thankful to my brothers and my extended family of my in-laws for their support and love." He concluding by expressing his gratitude for fans who have accepted him, and thanked them for their faith, applause, patience and love. Ajith Kumar has starred in more than 63 films till date. The actor, who had a small role in the 1990 Tamil film En Veedu En Kanavar, debuted as a lead actor in the 1993 film Amaravathi. ‘Dhadak 2 is a punch in the gut': Anurag Kashyap hails Karan Johar's film, compares it to works of Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, Yash Chopra
After critics hailed Karan Johar's Dhadak 2, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap took to Instagram to praise the film and debutant director Shazia Iqbal for helming a bold narrative that addresses the prominence of caste and class discrimination in the country. He compared the film to classics by legendary directors like Raj Kapoor and Bimal Roy and applauded Shazia for making a film that reflects 'what mainstream cinema was meant to be.' The film stars Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri in lead roles. In a long Instagram post, Anurag wrote, 'The film captures the conversation that we avoid on a day to day basis. Tamannaah Bhatia recalls working with Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan: ‘He rehearsed continuously for two and a half hours'
Actor Tamannaah Bhatia recently reflected on her collaborations with the Khan duo — Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. While she once shared the stage with Salman, it was an ad shoot that brought her together with SRK. Recalling the experience, Tamannaah mentioned performing with Salman Khan during the Da-Bangg The Tour Reloaded in Dubai, where they danced to the popular track 'Munni Badnaam'.
