Sunil Gavaskar refuses to talk about Yashasvi Jaiswal's Asia Cup non-selection: ‘Creates controversy'
Despite being a part of India's T20 World Cup-winning squad, Jaiswal was not picked for the Asia Cup. On the other hand, Shubman Gill, who was part of the reserve players' list in the ICC event, not only returned to the squad but was also made vice captain of the squad for the continental tournament starting September 9 in the UAE. Incidentally, both Jaiswal and Gill last turned up for the Indian T20I side in July last year before the selectors decided to preserve them for the longer formats.
Jaiswal has a T20I strike rate of 164 in the 23 matches that he has played, scoring 723 runs. Gill, on the other hand, has 578 runs in 221 matches at a strike rate of 139. When Gavaskar was made aware of Jaiswal's T20I numbers, which were far superior to Gill, the legendary cricketer said only 15 can be a part of the squad.
"You can only pick XI in the match and you can only pick 15 in the squad. Somebody has to miss out, that's just one of those in Indian cricket. No point in discussing whether A or B or C should've been there. This is now our team. We can all have our opinions before the selection committee picks the team but once the team is picked, we should back it fully. We shouldn't be saying A should've been there or B should've been there. That only creates controversy, which the players don't need," Gavaskar told India Today.
Gavaskar backs Shubman Gill to become India's T20I captain
Gavaskar was not at all surprised by Gill's return to the T20I setup and that too as the vice-captain of the side. 'Not surprising at all. He (Shubman Gill) scored over 750 runs just a couple of weeks ago. You cannot exclude a player in that kind of form. Also, he has done really well in the IPL, which concluded just before the tour to England. It's a very good inclusion. Giving him the vice-captaincy is also a way of telling him that in the future, he could be leading the T20 side. I think it's a very, very good selection,' Gavaskar said.
Gill scored 754 runs in the five-match Test series in England which India drew 2-2. 'He was very impressive in England. To score 750-plus runs while leading the side for the first time shows how well he handled pressure. This vice-captaincy is a clear sign that he is going to be the captain of the Indian team as well, It's always good to have him take the responsibility just a little bit earlier,' he added.

Aakash Chopra on Shreyas Iyer not picked in Asia Cup 2025 squad: ‘What more can you do than what you have already done?'
One of the iconic knocks of the Indian Premier League 2025 was when Shreyas Iyer smacked a 41-ball 87 to help Punjab get over the line against the Mumbai Indians in the qualifier-2. Although Punjab ended up losing the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Iyer has had a fruitful campaign both with the bat and as captain. However, he was not selected for the upcoming 2025 Asia Cup. 'Shreyas Iyer not being there is a big story. What more will Shreyas Iyer have to do? What more can you do than what you have already done? You had a 600-plus run IPL season, took the team to the final, scored runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, played Ranji, and won the Champions Trophy. That's all you can do as a human being,' Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel. 'This is the Asia Cup team. Don't attach the World Cup with it because there are 15 T20Is after this. The world changes in 15 T20Is. If he keeps scoring runs in ODIs, sooner or later, Shreyas Iyer will be part of the team. I have a strong feeling that Shreyas Iyer will be a part of India's T20 World Cup team,' he added. 'Shreyas' name is not even there in the five reserves, and that is surprising. It's understandable that you couldn't have him in the 15 as you can't play him in the XI, and you wanted lower-order batters as backup, where Shivam Dube is there, and Rinku Singh will be given another chance, which is absolutely par for the course,' he said. 'However, a place could have been created in the reserve players at least, where you have kept Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Prasidh Krishna. This player's name could have been there. You haven't kept it there either, and that doesn't send a great signal. The clarity in front of Shreyas' name is completely not there,' Chopra observed.

Sinquefield Cup: Gukesh bounces back with dominant win over Abdusattorov
World champion D Gukesh put his opening-round blues behind him and scored an excellent victory over former world rapid champion Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan in the second round of the Sinquefield Cup here. On a day when R Praggnanandhaa played a quiet game to draw with Fabiano Caruana of the United States, Alireza Firouzja of France gave a perfect endgame lesson as he crashed through the defense of Duda Jan-Krzysztof of Poland in the other decisive game of the day. Levon Aronian of the United States played out a draw with compatriot Samuel Sevian to remain in joint lead while another American Wesley So drew with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France in the 10-player USD 3,75,000 prize-money tournament. With seven rounds still to come, Praggnanandhaa, Aronian and Firouzja share the lead on 1.5 points. Gukesh moved to joint fourth place alongside Caruana, Wesley So, Sevian and Vachier-Lagrave. Duda stands on ninth spot on half a point while Abdusattorov is yet to open his account after losing his second game on the trot. Gukesh faced the open Sicilian, popularised by the legendry Viktor Korchnoi in the last century. There have been many takers of the variation at the top level, including Caruana, but these days the opening is not a favourite among elite players. Gukesh played one of the testing variations and did not shy away from mainstream theory. Abdusattorov got a passed pawn in the middle of the board supported by another pawn but his king was always under the hammer as Gukesh's imaginative manoeuvres proved. The Indian ace won a rook for a knight endgame, and even though the counter-play remained for the Uzbek, it was hard to find the exact moves with the clock ticking. Gukesh wrapped the issue with some timely exchanges leading to a won endgame. Praggnanandhaa decided to give Caruana a taste of his own medicine by going for the Rossolimo Variation that the American had used extensively in his World Championship match against Magnus Carlsen. However, the American proved his understanding of the resulting pawn structure in the middle game and some exchanges steered the game to a draw in the rook-and-minor-piece endgame that ensued. Firouzja had to showcase his skills in the endgame with a bishop and knight against the lone king and the Frenchman achieved it flawlessly. Results round 2: R Praggnanandhaa (Ind, 1.5) drew with Fabiano Caruana (USA, 1); Alireza Firouzja (Fra, 1.5) beat Duda Jan Kryzstof (Pol, 0.5); Levon Aronian (USA, 1.5) drew with Samuel Sevian (USA, 1); Wesley So (USA, 1) drew with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Fra, 1); D Gukesh (Ind) beat Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzb). PTI Cor AM Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa outplayed World Champion D Gukesh in the opening round of the Sinquefield Cup Chess tournament to rise to the third position in live world rankings. He now shares the lead with the unstoppable Levon Aronian of United States, who outsmarted Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan after the opening round on Monday. In other games of the first round Fabiano Caruana of USA played out a draw with Duda Jan-Kryzstof of Poland while wild card Samuel Savian split the point with American country-mate Wesley So while Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France also drew with another Frenchman Alireza Firouzja. With eight rounds still to come in the USD 350,000 prize money tournament, as many as six players share the third spot behind Praggnanandhaa and Aronian while Gukesh and Abdusattorov are at the bottom of the heap hoping to open their respective accounts in the next round. Praggananandhaa faced the Queen's gambit accepted by Gukesh who played with black pieces. The solid approach was under the scrutiny early as Gukesh spent a lot of time in a known position and went for a dubious set-up that involved early exchange of queens. Praggnanandhaa had the Bishop pair as playing with white pieces gave him a distinct advantage. Making things worse for himself, Gukesh also fell short of time and had to find some really difficult moves to stay in the game. Relentless, as he is, Praggnanandhaa did not let the position slip out of hand as he won a pawn by force and the rest was easy. The game lasted just 36 moves. "I don't really know what happened today. I think he was a bit off," said Praggnanandhaa after the game. Incidentally with this victory, Praggnanandhaa also restored parity with Gukesh in classical format in which both have three wins each. "Last year, I messed up some good positions against him, I think I did not beat him (in classical) for almost two years now, so finally it's good to get a win," noted Praggnanandhaa. Aronian was quick to find counter play once Nodirbek ran out of steam after a long time trying to attack the black King. The Uzbek Grandmaster had the white pieces and a slightly favourable position but the American stayed put with some good resources. The game should have been a draw but Abdusattorov bungled and lost badly. Results round 1: R Praggnanandhaa (Ind) beat D Gukesh (Ind); Fabiano Caruana (Usa) drew with Duda Jan Kryzstof (Pol); Samuel Savian (Usa) drew with Wesley So (Usa); Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzb) lost to Levon Aronian (Usa); Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Fra) drew with Alireza Firouzja (Fra). Axar Patel's demotion from India T20I vice-captaincy role questioned by former cricketer: 'Axar deserves an explanation'
Despite being retained in the squad, Axar Patel emerged as one of the biggest casualties as BCCI selectors demoted him from the India T20I vice-captaincy and handed the role to Shubman Gill. A former India cricketer has questioned the decision. Axar Patel has been reduced to a squad player in India's squad for Asia cup 2025. Image: Reuters The biggest loser in India's latest T20I squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was Axar Patel, who lost his Test captaincy in the shortest format to incoming Shubman Gill. While Gill's return and his elevation to the deputy post speak volumes about his talent and the bright future that he has ahead of himself, Axar Patel must be wondering what he did wrong. The 31-year-old all-rounder from Gujarat, Patel, was named the vice captain in the series against England earlier this year. He was India's second-highest wicket-taker after Varun Chakaravarthy as he took six wickets and India won the series 4-1. Overall, he has 535 runs in 71 T20Is at a strike rate of 139.32 and 71 at an impressive economy rate of 7.30. He has been in a much better form since the start of 2023, scoring 364 runs in the shortest format at an average of 21.41 and a strike rate of 142.8. Axar also took 37 wickets during this period at an economy rate of just 7.1. Kaif backs Axar amid demotion Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has raised a very pertinent point as Axar Patel was demoted in the latest squad announcement. Kaif hoped that the selectors had a word with Axar before making the decision public, as the all-rounder did 'no wrong.' 'I hope Axar Patel was informed about his removal from vice-captaincy in advance and he didn't come to know about it from the press conference. Axar did no wrong so he deserves an explanation,' Kaif wrote on X. The now-retired spinner said that Gill is being forced as an all-format captain by the selectors. 'Maybe they are thinking of Shubman Gill as the leader for the future. Maybe he can be the all-format captain. But it is not necessary to have the same captain in all formats,' Ashwin said while analysing Gill's inclusion. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
