Ravens rookie getting all the flowers after dominating Colts
The Baltimore Ravens kicked off their NFL preseason slate with a home game against the Indianapolis Colts. The Ravens won, 24-16, in a run-heavy attack led by Keaton Mitchell and D'Ernest Johnson.
The win was overshadowed by some brutal injuries, including a season-ending blow to sixth-round rookie Bilhal Kone and the Ravens also announced that sixth-round rookie Robert Longerbeam landed on Injured Reserve after missing the game.
There were some positives from the Baltimore rookies, including the play of former Colorado star LaJohntay Wester, who had an exciting punt return touchdown.
However, one Ravens rookie stood out above the rest: Second-round linebacker Mike Green.
While Green just had one tackle, he did a lot of other things in the game and captured the attention of other Baltimore staffers, as Jordan Schultz mentioned.
'Spoke with someone on the #Ravens' staff about rookie DE Mike Green: 'He just knows how to get to the QB.' They wanted to see it vs a real opponent and loved what he did against the #Colts — where he had a 30 percent pass-rush win rate.'
That staffer added more intel on Green's performance, per Schultz.
'He's relentless… You feel him every snap. It's fun to watch his tape and see the bend he has for his size. He's gonna be a great player.'
NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger also posted a clip of Green's performance from the game with the following: 'What I loved was he wasn't afraid to try a lot of different pass rush moves…and he has an advanced array of rushes.'
Green began his college career at Virginia before playing his final two seasons at Marshall and putting up big numbers. In his two years at Marshall, he had 60 solo tackles with 32 tackles for loss and 21.5 sacks while being named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year in 2024.
The Ravens next preseason game is against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, and for now, all eyes are on Mike Green.

Matthew Stafford returns to Rams practice Monday after weeks of uncertain injury updates
The Los Angeles Rams got some excellent news Monday. After weeks of uncertain injury updates, quarterback Matthew Stafford finally returned to practice. Stafford is dealing with a back injury. While his absence from training camp caused some to wonder whether Stafford's Week 1 status was in jeopardy, his return suggests he'll be fine for the start of the regular season. This story will be updated.

Panthers great Cam Newton to have jersey number retired by Auburn
Before he was a Carolina Panthers legend, Cam Newton was a University of Auburn legend. So before there was a No. 1, there was a No. 2. But that won't be the case, at least for the Tigers' football program, any longer—as the school announced on Monday that they will retire Newton's No. 2 jersey this upcoming season. Newton's lone year at Auburn is regarded as one of, if the not greatest season in college football history. That storybook 2010 campaign saw the Atlanta, Ga. native pass for 2,908 yards and 30 touchdowns and run for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores en route to a landslide victory of the Heisman Trophy and the second-ever national championship in Auburn's history. His efforts helped him become the first overall selection of the 2011 NFL draft—a pick made, of course, by the Panthers. Auburn is set to officially retire Newton's number on Oct. 11, before the Tigers take on the Georgia Bulldogs at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Newton will be the fourth Tiger to have his number retired—joining Bo Jackson, Pat Sullivan and Terry article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers great Cam Newton to have jersey number retired by Auburn

Xavien Howard's agent says 4-time Pro Bowler signing with the Colts
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard is signing with the Indianapolis Colts, his agent David Canter announced Monday in a social media post. Colts officials have not yet made an announcement. The 32-year-old Howard was cut by the Miami Dolphins in February 2024 and did not play last year after suffering multiple injuries leading up to his release. Indy believes Howard can make an impact, though, because of his previous history with Lou Anarumo, the Colts new defensive coordinator. Anarumo coached Miami's defensive backs in 2016 and 2017 — Howard's first two seasons in the league. Indy was seeking help in the secondary because of injuries. Pro Bowl cornerback Kenny Moore II has missed time with an injured knee and another starter, Jaylon Jones, was taken off the practice field after hurting his hamstring. Rooke cornerback Justin Walley, a third-round draft pick, also was competing for a starting job until suffering a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament before the preseason opener. And cornerback JuJu Brents is out with a hamstring injury. Howard led the NFL interceptions twice during his career — picking off seven passes in 2018 and adding 10 more in 2020. He has 29 interceptions, including two he returned for scores, and 331 tackles in 100 games over eight NFL seasons. ___ AP NFL:
