Malaysia continues to uphold Palestine's right to exist as an independent and sovereign state

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia's stance on Palestine remains unchanged, with the country continuing to uphold Palestine's right to exist as an independent and sovereign state, said Madani government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The Communications Minister confirmed that the Cabinet had been briefed by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan on the Palestinian issue, following a recent United Nations (UN) high-level conference coordinated by Saudi Arabia and France. "Our Permanent Representative to the UN was asked to review and sign a joint declaration, but the government decided that more time is needed to study (the document). "At this point, Malaysia's stance on Palestine has not changed. Our stance is clear. Palestine has the right to exist as a state. We are not looking at any other matters beyond that,' he said at a press conference following the Cabinet meeting on Friday (Aug 1). Fahmi was responding to reports that Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt were among 17 countries, along with the United Kingdom, France, and Canada, that signed a declaration urging Hamas to disarm and relinquish its governance over Gaza. The joint declaration, issued after the UN high-level conference, condemned the Oct 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and called for the immediate release of all remaining hostages. It also urged Hamas to hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority as part of a two-state solution framework. Fahmi said Wisma Putra has been given time to review the declaration in full, and the Cabinet has also requested the Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to deliver a Ministerial Statement in Parliament early next week to provide further clarity. "That will likely take place between Monday and Wednesday. I believe the minister (Mohamad) will provide a more detailed explanation then, but the government's stance remains unchanged,' he said. — Bernama

Cops charged with conspiracy, extorting RM10,000 from Thai nationals

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Three low-ranking policemen claimed trial to two charges of conspiracy and extorting RM10,000 from two Thai nationals last year. The accused, Mohd Shukri Amran, 35; Mohammad Faizal Mirdukhim @ Mustapa, 43; and, Muhammad Arifshah Zulkefli, 23, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read before magistrate Nurul Rasyidah. According to the charges, the three are alleged to have conspired and intentionally extorted Anotai Saentawee and Suwit Sake, causing the victims to fear harm and hand over RM10,000 in cash. The offence allegedly took place at a southbound rest and service area petrol station in Juru near here about 1.30am on Nov 26 last year. They were charged under Section 385 of the Penal Code, read with Section 34, which provides for a penalty of up to seven years in prison, a fine, caning or any two of these punishments if convicted. Another accused, Muhammad Nizar Mat Axid, 40, also pleaded not guilty to a separate charge of extortion involving the same victims. Nizar, who is also a policeman, is accused of conspiring to extort Saentawee and Sake with the other three accused at a rented house in Jalan Setia 2, Taman Setia about 2.30am on the same date. He was charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 385, which provides for a penalty of up to seven years in prison, a fine, caning or any two of these punishments if convicted. Deputy public prosecutor Nor Shakila Dahari proposed bail of RM10,000 with one surety for each accused, but the defence lawyers requested a lower amount, citing that all of them serve at the Seberang Prai Tengah district police headquarters and needed to support their families. Shukri was represented by lawyer M. Puveneswaran, Arifshah was represented by lawyer Muhammad Amirul Hakim and Faizal and Nizar were represented by Ima Syakira Mohd Salim, a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation. The court allowed bail of RM4,000 with one surety for each accused and set Sept 12 for mention.
