"Such a dark day must not repeat...": Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on 50 years of Emergency
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 26 (ANI): As the Union Cabinet passed a resolution to observe the 50th anniversary of the Emergency as 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas', Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, on Thursday, said that the government is putting this forward to the public so the dark day does not repeat.
Addressing the media in Shimla, Rijiju said, 'Yesterday in the Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we passed a resolution. India is the largest democracy in the world...democracy should stay alive, that's our responsibility.'
'On June 25, 1975, in the wee hours, the Emergency was imposed. The media suffered the Emergency's biggest rage as the media was strangled,' he added.
On Samvidhan Hatya Divas, the Union Minister said, 'Today, when 50 years of Emergency...we are bringing this among the public so such a dark day does not repeat in the history of India. So, we observed this as Samvidhan Hatya Divas. The Cabinet passed it as the Cabinet has the responsibility to run the state.
Remembering the Emergency, he said that leaders were imprisoned, and one family became bigger than the nation.
'When the Emergency was imposed, all big leaders were jailed...One family became bigger than the nation. When one family, one person, becomes above the Constitution, democracy dies. So we should not forget it as a 50-year-old incident, but it should be remembered so that no leader or citizen repeats it,' he said.
Meanwhile, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday observed the 50th anniversary of the Emergency by attending a special screening of a program held in Margao, as part of a nationwide initiative to reflect on the historic period.
The screening was conducted at multiple locations across the state and the country, drawing participation from citizens, students, and party workers.
Speaking to ANI after the event, CM Sawant said, 'On the completion of 50 years of Emergency, a program is being organised here in Margao. The screening of this program is being conducted everywhere...We received a good response here...It is important to observe this day for the future generations...'
He emphasised that remembering the Emergency was crucial not only for preserving democratic values but also to ensure that future generations understand the consequences of curbing civil liberties.
Between 25 June 1975 and 21 March 1977, India was placed under a state of Emergency under Article 352 of the Constitution. On 25 June 1975, the then-President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued the Emergency Proclamation under Article 352, citing threats from internal disturbance. (ANI)

AP: Tourist influx has gone up in Pahalgam: Union Minister
Vijayawada, June 26 (UNI) Union Minister for Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has asserted that the number of tourists visiting Pahalgam in J and K has gone up, in the aftermath of the April 22 terrorist attack. Addressing a press conference here today, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that he visited Pahalgam recently. 'The tourists have started coming to Jammu and Kashmir. The influx to Pahalgam has gone up now, after the unfortunate incident,' he highlighted, referring to the terrorist attack there in which 26 tourists were killed. The Union Minister reiterated that the Centre had decided to commemorate the 50th year of imposition of Emergency in the country as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'. Indians should commemorate the darkest chapter of the Emergency to pay tributes to thousands of people who sacrificed to protect democracy in the country, he noted. 'Their sacrifice has preserved our constitution. Our freedom is not a gift but earned through sacrifices of thousands of people. The basic core of our constitution is human rights and freedom of speech,' he affirmed. Shekhawat said that Emergency was imposed only to remain in power by the then rulers, who cited internal disturbances as the reason. Over one lakh people were arrested during the Emergency and press censorship was imposed while civil liberties were suspended, he recalled. The imposition of Emergency made the life of people in the country miserable, he said. He emphasised the need of inculcating the message among people on protecting constitutional rights and institutions. UNI DP RN

AAP leader Somnath Bharti can't represent wife in defamation case: Nirmala Sitharaman to court
Citing 'conflict of interest', a lawyer representing Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, on Thursday, told a Delhi court that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Somnath Bharti cannot legally represent his wife in a defamation case lodged against the FM. Bharti's wife, Lipika Mitra, had filed a criminal defamation case against the BJP minister, accusing her of making 'defamatory, false, and malicious' statements about her husband. The complaint claimed the statements were aired widely on news platforms, both on TV and YouTube, with the alleged objective of 'tarnishing his reputation and damaging his electoral prospects' during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Appearing before the Court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Paras Dalal, Sitharaman counsel argued that Bharti – an advocate – representing his wife in the case would amount to a 'conflict of interest'. The counsel also sought the withdrawal of Bharti's vakalatnama (a document authorising a lawyer to represent a client). Failure to comply, the counsel stated, would lead to disciplinary proceedings being initiated against him. The case pertains to a press conference addressed by Sitharaman on May 17, 2024. 'The accused made these utterances with the sole intention to weaken his chances of winning and cause immense mental anguish to him,' Mitra alleged in her complaint. She also argued that the alleged statements made by Sitharaman had caused 'irreparable mental agony' to the couple's two children. Bharti had sought time to respond to the allegations levelled by Sitharaman counsel. Following this, the matter was adjourned and listed after summer vacations. ACJM Dalal will now hear the matter on July 16.
