Pioli blames mistakes for Al-Nassr's Asian Champions League exit
JEDDAH - Al-Nassr coach Stefano Pioli blamed an error-strewn display for his Saudi Pro League side's semi-final exit from the Asian Champions League Elite on Wednesday as the Riyadh-based outfit were handed a 3-2 defeat in Jeddah by Japan's Kawasaki Frontale.
The Cristiano Ronaldo-led team had gone into the meeting at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium as favourites to progress only to be dumped out of the competition by the J-League side, who will face Al-Ahli in Saturday's final.
"We have made a lot of mistakes and this has cost us the match," said Pioli. "It is always very difficult to lose in a semi-final.
"Our opponent surprised us, they played at a very high level and the problem was that we were not disciplined. We committed a lot of mistakes and we didn't play at our full capacity."
Kawasaki had gone into the game with one day less rest than Al-Nassr after their respective quarter-finals in the centrally hosted finals series, but came out looking sharper and quicker to the ball.
Tatsuya Ito's 10th-minute volley put Kawasaki in front but Sadio Mane's deflected effort levelled the scores 18 minutes later.
Yuto Ozeki put Kawasaki in front again four minutes before the interval and substitute Akihiro Ienaga netted 14 minutes from time at close range to ensure Aiman Yahya's long-range strike was too little, too late for Pioli's team.
The Italian's decisions throughout the game will come under scrutiny as Al-Nassr's wait for a first Asian Champions League crown goes on for at least another year.
"I understand the criticism of the tactics and at this kind of level we knew the style of our opponent, but we were not good at applying the tactics and the style we trained on," said Pioli.
"We played the same style, we were no different than in the previous match. We didn't do anything different. This is the reality. It's difficult for everybody, for the team, for the players, for the coach and the fans of Al-Nassr." REUTERS

On Wednesday, Ronaldo scored the winner as Portugal beat Germany 2-1 to go into the Nations League final, where they will face Spain. Many have labelled Sunday's final as a face-off between Ronaldo and 17-year-old Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal but the Portuguese forward said he did not see it as such. "It's always been like that, whenever I've played football, whenever I've played a big game it's always been Cristiano against this one, against that one," he said. "It's been 20-something years and it's still the same, it doesn't keep me up at night anymore, it's a normal thing. They're completely different generations, a generation that's starting out, another that's finishing, which is my case. "In reality it's not like that, it's a team against a team. It will always be like that... Inter sign Brazilian forward Henrique from Marseille
Inter Milan have signed Brazilian forward Luis Henrique from Ligue 1 side Olympique de Marseille, the Serie A club announced on Saturday. While the length of the contract and financial details were not disclosed, Italian media reported the 23-year-old had signed until 2030 in a deal valued at 23 million euros ($26.21 million) plus a further 2 million euros in add-ons. Henrique began his career at Botafogo before signing for Marseille in 2020. In 108 appearances for the French club, he has scored 11 goals - nine of which came in the 2024-25 season as Marseille finished second in Ligue 1. PARIS - The French Open men's singles tournament will culminate with a blockbuster clash in Paris on Sunday. World number one Jannik Sinner faces defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the most eagerly anticipated men's singles final since the start of the Rafa Nadal era 20 years ago at Roland Garros where the results were largely a foregone conclusion. RUTHLESS SINNER SEEKS MAIDEN ROLAND GARROS TITLE Italian top seed Sinner has been impressive since his return from a doping ban last month, charging into Sunday's final without dropping a single set in his six matches in Paris. The 23-year-old outclassed 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in their semi-final to confirm his superb form on clay after also reaching the final in Rome in May in his first tournament back from his ban. He was beaten there by Alcaraz in straight sets. Any doubts that Sinner was lacking match practice were quickly dispelled by the ruthless efficiency with which he has dispatched all his opponents in Paris to set up a mouth-watering final against arguably the most gifted claycourt player since 14-time French Open champion Nadal.
